Exactly.
Those holes in the base must have had a function. Probably for cooling. I don't think that a cover part would have those. I think these were internal components. Also the weird steps inside the base. Doesn't make sense if that was just a base for standing.
The orange might very well be the cast resin color. Since they needed at least three they might as well have made a mold.

The problem is that we are not sure if the holes are originally part of the found item or if they were drilled in as part of the props design. It has been observed by someone here that the holes don't look consistent in spacing. You can also see marks that look like a drill bit might have hit the stepped walls on the underside of the flared part such as from a drill press. I honestly don't know.
It's always possible that the main body part was something found but they used orange cast copies of the part instead, and I had considered that. However, I have not seen any other Star Wars prop that used orange resin. I don't know why they would make an exception for this part. I tend to think that the prop department found something they could obtain multiples of. For example, a signal lantern, a light fixture, and industrial part, etc...
Okay what are the hobnails for? I'm not following the other thread so I don't know what you're referring to.

Does that hole under the grill look square shaped with rounded corners to anyone else?
The correct dynodes have a circle opening on the back. Which oils explain the rounded edge you are seeing.
It's the two greeblies on top with the texture on top that are also being used on Luke's lightsaber from ROTJ, the old V2 stunt saber. The original prop is owned by Brandon Allinger.

I hope no one was thinking that I meant the items I showed earlier were what I thought were the found items. I was simply using them as examples of how handles or brackets would be the reason holes on the side of the item existed once they were removed. It could be a subway/railroad style lantern but not the reason why I made the original post.
Oh not at all. But I found them interestingly close in shape and coincidentally color. I did a little research and found these. Just sharing with the thread for discussion.
It is very obvious these are not what was used as they are one piece body, unlike the props.

So if you are not following the V2 hilt thread and discussion of the mystery chunk which also looks to be the same as the two little textured pieces on top. It looks like hobnails are out and gun magazine release button or part of an adjustable gun slide sight is in. Looks like people have the part in hand but no one at the moment is really saying. If you want to follow, that particular part of the discussion starts around this point...

Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber
If you count the V3 as a motorised (that's still questionable?) with the V2 & barbican that makes three. Two graffys, do you know where they are now? but yes that would take us to 5 motorised ones 3 out standing. very hard to say, but this tape pattern or style matches the warehouse practice...

Doesn't have the inner ribbing like the mine or the lamps.
The shape is similar... which like the subway lamps I find interesting. I don’t know if audio devices like bike sirens have been scoured through.
Such scale and form/function could also lend itself to bicycle lamps, dynamos, dynohubs, alternators, engine mounts etc. I don’t think it inhibits a search so much as expands the thought to potentially include keywords to help us find ‘the thing’... heck it led me into nautical rudder housings where I don’t have time to look right now.

I agree in that there are a lot of thing out there that it could be that probably have not been considered. At one time I even looked into bubblegum machines because the multi opening at the top remained me of the base. For all we know, the found item is 4 feet long and they just chopped off the top few inches and used that.
But I also believe that you can narrow down what the part is not based on what we might be seeI got.
Like i said, there appear to be holes on the side, this look like something has been removed like a handle or bracket. So we can rule out any cylinder object that would not have these side holes.
