RomanProps: STEEL IS REAL V2

OH MY GOSH!!! A steel V2!!!!! Ha that's awesome! I can't wait to see what people do with it!

I’m replacing this with the REAL STEEL V2

I believe someone (who is a member here) was commissioned to do a piece for the first visual dictionary in the 90s. The model was a cutaway of a graflex and had a quartz crystal in the center. there were wires, capacitors and some cool things in there. I liked that there was obviously a power source, places that "focused" the fantasy energy and things that "stabilized" what came out. Nothing to do with the films but a neat thing in a way.

*resistors not capacitors
There's both. The energy modulation circuit line ends on a capacitor. Thanks for the info, I wanted to be sure I'd not gone (more) nuts & missed something important from a film.

The crystal arrangement reminds me of how the ubiquitous 532nm green laser works. They're not true LED lasers but 'proper' crystal lasers - well sort of. An IR LED laser (808nm) has two crystals (stuck together) directly infront of the 808 diode, fixed to the diode housing. They're tiny by the way about 1mm sq in total. First a Nd:YVO4 - Neodymium-doped Yttrium OrthoVanadate crystal is pumped (genuine technical term) by the 808 to produce a deeper IR at 1064nm which exits to the sceond KTP (Potassium Titanyl Phosphate, KTiOPO4) interactivity frequency doubler (had look those names up), which produces the green beam at 532 nm. It's not that efficent, about 30% if I remember but no semiconductor has yet been invented to lase at a green wavelength.

A hack to give you a cheap IR laser is open up a green laser pointer & break off the crystals - they're quite soft. If anyone's tempted to muck about with lasers have a damn good read up in various laser forums. Once you're at 100mw plus things get progressively hazardous for your eyes esp. with the violet ones. It's actually what brought me to this forum, I was thinking of getting a beast of a 7 watt violet laser but realised quickly how restricted my fun would be. Me & anyone near me in laser goggles & outside only or I'd be putting black scorched lines over all my furniture & walls or even setting stuff on fire. I rationalise that what I was really looking for was a light saber, didn't like the LED polycarbonate bladed ones so began an epic fall down a massive rabbit hole that is ANH lightsaber props.

I see them now! (and wow what an experiment that would be)

I think Roman's Steel V2 would be an excellent source to make a stunt lightsaber, no core needed ;)

This sort of thing, but it's so easy to scorch stuff. I have a couple of 450nm's at about 1.2-1.4W & they're plenty scary enough. They also don't appear that bright. A 200mw green is equally bright if not more so. Our eyes are most sensitive to green & relatively insensitive to blue/violet, This has nothing to do with the power of the laser or how quickly it will fry your retina (at a couple of meters the type I have will do so faster than you can blink & it has happened - but not to me & I wanted to keep it that way).

I can’t wait to see someone do a rat rod version of it, weather it with vinegar and salt, get this thing super rusty

I can't wait for someone to do an idealized stainless version of it, so it will always be perfect and never get rusty!

Of course I'm still waiting on that same someone to make a stainless Obi-Wan lightsaber. ;)

One of these days I'll stop thinking about buying hilts and get serious about spending that money on a lathe so that I can make my own stainless lightsabers.

For now though, I'm glad to see a V2 in steel, the aluminum hilts are just too lightweight.

Hey Romans Empire ! Any idea on pricing yet?

Man, I really only ever ENJOYED (and even that's a bit of a stretch as far as word choice goes) machining 303 stainless. Any stainless harder than that is no fun at all, in my opinion. 304, 316 no thanks!

You go through SO many tools and inserts!

Now, regular old cold or hot rolled steel, that can be fun, and I applaud Roman for choosing this material for his V2! If I had the dough to toss around, I'd totally get one, just on cool factor alone!

The pre order is up guys!!

Just got my pre order in! I am so excited for this run. Thanks Roman!

Halliwax, I’m looking forward to your tutorial!

This looks incredible! Alas, my own project has sapped all funds at the moment :( Have to say though, it's got me thinking about pricing up my ISYHCANL model in stainless for its next run. It'd weigh a ton! Hopefully this V2 will be an ongoing model and I'll definitely invest in the future! It's stunning
