Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Well Tarkin, while perhaps a bit disturbed, didn't seem gobsmacked when Vader started strangling Motti. I think he had some idea of what is possible with the Force. I will say I've always viewed believing in the Force as somewhat religious in nature (ie: 'I don't believe it/That is why you fail...', etc.) as it combines some of GL's Methodist Christian upbringing with Buddhist, Taoist eastern influences too. Even the famous line "May the Force be with you" itself is a take on the old valediction "May God be with you". That seems to be a pretty strong clue as to how GL wanted us to perceive the Force.

At this point I don't have a strong feeling one way or the other about the the notion of this Force-significant planet Jedha. It could be interesting and broaden our understanding of the mysterious Force....or it could be really cheesy. I really hope they aren't looking to reinforce the ridiculous idea of the Force-amp Kyber crystals powering the DS laser and the Empire mines it from there or something. That's an idea that just needs to fade away and be forgotten about.

People also forget the Rebellion has affinity for the force as I said earlier. General Dodonna says "May the force be with you." in ANH and Ackbar says "May the force be with us." in ROTJ.

GREAT post wolf!

Governor Tarkin: The Jedi are extinct, their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion.

Han Solo: Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

Admiral Motti: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fort-...

I've always seen it as a religion

May the Force be with You

Some say science is a religion....

Tarkin knew Anakin and the Jedi in the Clone Wars and saw all that they could do. And may as well get ready to see Kibur crystals being mined by the Empire on Jedah because that is going to be a thing which was also established in the CW unaired episodes. Not on Jedah, but the Empire acquiring big Kibur crystals. But that link I posted from EW pretty much confirms that's why the Empire and Saw are there.

Donnie Yen spoiled the Jeddah details a few weeks ago (link).

Interesting that there was a unused story of Obi-Wan & Anakin discovering the Separatists mining crystals on Utapau.

The official site has released the synopsis for the film:
From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves. In theaters December 2016.

The trailer released later today is said to be 90 seconds - not a full trailer.

lets not get crazy. :) Reading all the source material Lucas wrote for SW I do think he envisioned it at least initially as a form of religion. Some aspects of that survive to this day while some of the films seem to distance itself from it.

In his first drafts of SW, the force was a certainly a religion or practice. And even in the final film ANH *all* the actions vader, kenobi and even luke do aren't overtly "superhuman" or even technically supernatural or unexplainable. Motti's strangulation? It's hypnotic, it's in his mind. The stormtroopers thinking that kenobi et al are harmless? Troopers hearing a sound and being distracted so Ben can slip away? Sand people hearing a monster scream (or whatever) and leaving luke? It's all in their minds. It's suggestion.

Even Luke hitting the remote while blind then hitting the DS port exactly -- luck or skill? Han calls it luck, simple tricks and nonsense...Han doesn't believe. Han, and by and large most people, can't "use the force" because they are too worldy, jaded, or just skeptical. It's about Belief, like all religions.

Now, in Empire and later, it transforms into magic - levitation, telekensis, telepathy, 30 foot superjumps with triple back flips. And that's fine...for an entertaining movie, but I preferred the subtle uses of the force. I enjoyed the mental powers used by Kylo Ren and Rey in TFA and thought they were more subtle. Stopping a blaster bolt in mid air and holding it, less so...

Death & resurrection, belief in an invisible force which guides your destiny, follow the teachings and achieve eternal life, virgin birth, prophecies, dark side vs light side

The new generation scoff and disbelieve & prefer science & technology,....theres no space in their life for mysticism

Anyone notice the sideburns on the Imperial officers? They are there at least on many of them.

The one thing I hope they explain is why in ANH most of the Imperials had sideburns,.....I'm hoping for a scene in the film where you can see a poster in a canteen or something reminding the officers to take part in 'Sideburn-ber',....like Movember

I can't believe we live in a world now where they release teasers to teaser trailers and trailers for trailers.

X1000

They could say E8 teaser on youtube and have it be 30 seconds of text saying Star Wars Episode VIII December 15th 2017 and it'd hit 2M views in day 1.
