Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

I'm skeptical about that aspect of the story the most.

Didn't realize I was in the wrong thread earlier... so to repost...
I HATE these friggin reshoot articles. This happens on almost, if not EVERY, flick.
You shoot for, say, 3 months... 30 days... whatever. You get back home, edit it all up, and before you're even ready to test it, you KNOW there are shots that didn't work... inserts needed... pickups... transitions that didn't work... a story element that worked on paper but didn't read... so you go and reshoot. This isn't a problem because a reshoot budget and schedule is usually already in the contract... even down to how much you can get away with.
You may also want to reshoot because you tested it and everyone loved the robot that only had one scene. So the suits tell you "get that robot in more scenes".
Sometimes movies test THROUGH THE ROOF and you STILL do reshoots cuz you watch the audience reaction vid from the screening and can tell "oh hey, everyone loved it, but look how bored everyone is during these 5 minutes... 4 people got up and went to the washroom... lets rewrite... and throw that robot in there to liven it up".
Sometimes they screen the flick to amazing test scores and say "holy crap that movie looks great... you know that scene you wanted to shoot but we said no? Well here's some more cash! Go get em!"
But yes, maybe it did suck and they are panicing, I don't know... I'm not there...
But hearing there are reshoots means NOTHING, cuz every movie has them.

Here's a reshoot history on flick coming soon...
- When the movie was pretty much rough cut together, there was a screening for friends and family... bringing a lot of writer/comedian/director friends to give opinions. Based on that there were a bunch of changes made. Overall everyone was really positive, saying "This is going to be huge" "Wish we had thought of it first" "Hilarious"
- Then they had a suit screening a while later, and the studio gave notes they thought could be better... some were taken, some were not. Either way, they were really happy, and upped the budget for changes the directors were hoping for. Once these changes got started, the whole third act was rewritten.
- They then hired an outside editor not related to the project to do a pass... he made a suggestion that the directors/producers liked, so a MAJOR character was rewritten from page one.
- they then tested the movie nearly finished for two audiences... New York and California.... a sequence would get HUGE laughs in California, but dead silence in New York (and vice versa). Since they need laughs across the board, sequences were cut... REWRITES! BOTH screenings tested HUGE... BIG numbers... scored off the charts. But still rewrote/reshot a good 25 minutes.
- Had another test screening near completion of the film. Big Scores again! Approval rating through the roof, but based on audience reaction vid... cut cut cut rewrite rewrite...
- They then screened it at a major festival. It was the darling of the festival!... But they still took feedback... cut cut cut cut cut.
- Final product locked.
And all of this is completely normal... frustrating but normal.

I don't think anyone here was panicking about the fact there were reshoots. I think most understand that reshoots and pick up shots are not that unusual. I think most were more concerned about *why* they were happening and the allegation that this supposed test audience didn't like the movie and the execs were freaking out. Of course, it goes without saying that's assuming any of that is true which is sounds like it isn't.
But the reshoots were predicated on a fictitious panic resulting from test screenings which never occurred. Does anyone really believe LucasFilm would screen a Star Wars film for anyone outside of LusasFilm?
The internet panic is just insane right now...

I'd be more worried if there were NO re-shoots... "you telling me everything is perfect on the first go round? You sure you don't want to have another look see?"
Worry if you hear the film has been pulled from the director or he walked.
Or if he goes on twitter and says "this isn't the movie I wanted to make!"
or "Rogue One - Directed by Alan Smithee"

Well IMO I think the Rogue One trailer was better than the entire TFA. I don't think reshooting scenes equals a bad movie. Once you get into the editing room you probably find places where you want to resituate the actors or need more dialogue for a scene.

While test screening might not have been the proper term, according to the article Disney execs did watch the initial cut of the film.

TBH, I just wish he'd stop posting - or at least stop going as far has often does. He's ruining a lot of the speculative fun. He often comes off (to me, at least) as a pretentious, sour, know-it-all, rather than a LFL Exec and makes me miss Sansweet and Bonnie Burton. Although he's not as bad as the MakingStarWars folks and those that slobber over him.

I understand if they want this to be a "family" movie, but I wouldn't consider Empire to be a "fun" movie, except for a few scenes with Yoda before Luke realized who he was. It had a few laughs, like when they couldn't get the Falcon started in the cold, but it had a pretty somber tone.
