Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

That's awesome! I work and live in the real world.

Without even seeing what you look like I know of at least 20 women currently serving at Camp Pendleton that would kick your ass for what you just typed. And do it without breaking a sweat. You wouldn't dare say what you typed to their faces. Stay strong, keyboard warrior.

this is a sci-fi movie its not meant to be realistic, there people with the ability to move objects with their mind, there is handles with laser beams coming out, there is anti gravity ships, there is aliens, etc.
If you want realism watch a documentary film.

seriously, as long as the characters and story are written well, WHO CARES?

BACK TO THE MOVIE!
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned what is possibly the droid Alan Tudyek is playing, here is a pretty good shot of him

Women cannot compete with men physically. It's not sexist. It's not misogynistic. It's science.

Show me one--just one--woman in Major League Baseball. Show me one woman in the NBA. Show me one woman in the NHL. Show me one woman in the NFL. There aren't any. There never were any. And there never will be any. Women are too weak, too slow, and to fragile to compete with men in top-tier athletics (and combat).

That's reality.

Now, when it comes to fiction, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief, to varying degrees, depending on the movie or show. I absolutely loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and cheered Buffy on as she beat up the monster of the week, every week. But that was pure camp. I also love Sarah Connor, and thought Linda Hamilton played a great badass in T2! But they limited what she could do, and kept it grounded in reality. As for Rey, the Force is strong with her, and so I was willing to see her do some extraordinary things, even without any training. But the writers took it waaaaay too far. For her to beat down a near-Sith Lord who can throw her 30' in the air with a flick of his finger, and can stop a laser blast in mid-flight, in a duel with a weapon she's never wielded before in her life was the height of absurdity.

Star Wars is not Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I expect it to be grounded more in reality. Some of you don't, and that's your prerogative. But I want my Star Wars heroes or heroines to be plausible and relatable. Rey was neither. (FTR, though, I adore Daisy and think she did a fantastic job with the role they gave her. It's just that the role was ridiculously written.)

The Wook

Nope. Diego Luna's character is named Cassein Willix. Besides, in this timeline, Biggs would still be in Tatooine, planning to go to the Imperial Academy.

Darn, this thread turned into something I'm not very fond of. We should wait and watch the movie first, before absurdly generalizing about various female and/or Asian characters. Let's wait for the movie and then you can bash any character, but only after seeing what he/she does in that context. Who knows, some people might change their minds afterwards. Some will never though, but that is another story, and to be honest I'd like that to be out of this thread for now.

Don't know about the troopers, but maybe these AT-ATs are a different version for another type of territory (one for snow, one for water and sand, one for lava, one for poop, ... I don't know ^^).

Or they simply improved the design by the time of ESB. Though I think they could have improved them more, like with a turret on top :)

Next on the PC block is Slave Leia. She will now be known as 'Geographically Restricted Unpaid Laborer Leia'.

:lol

Sometimes I just ..........as a Star Wars fan of nearly four decades I feel I have just watched one of the most exciting, "closest to" the original concept SW trailer I have ever seen since the OT. I watched it about twenty times yesterday and first thing I did when I woke up this morning was watch it again. And I was still totally thrilled by it.
And then I came here. Hoping to find others who were similarly effected.
I wonder why the hell I even bothered.
Anyone who has anything relevant to say is drowned out by pages of garbage posts from the same people whinging on and on with their complaints and their inability to move beyond the things THEY found THEY didn't like about the last film. And its just not this movie.
Nothing really relevant to say about this one mind you, just seemingly desperate to raise their self obsession with being heard again and again in this thread because if THEY didn't post it here nobody would take any notice of them.
Its all a work of fiction. Get it? Its all a ****ing game of make believe. Every classical fictional "hero" thats gone on a "journey" has always been unrealistically lucky, or favored by the gods, or has enemies who are clever enough to make plans to conquere the galaxy or a world but are so stupid they cannot weld a piece of steel grating across a small thermal exhaust port or don't shoot Mr Bond in the head the moment he blurts his name out. Get it. Because if they die as they should in reaL LIFE there isn't much of a story to tell.
Ever wondered why you don't get loads of films about real heros that in any way resemble the movies .Because they can't survive the endless gun battles, the extreme physical damage to their bodies, and the unrealistic odds without terrible and often fatal injuries . Swords or a knife against a gun, forget it unless its very close quarters. And not even then.
So when I listen to these really pathetic attempts to argue a woman can't beat a man ass I think well, they can bloody well shoot just as well because I've met them and lost against some of them. I've also watched a 5ft 7" 2nd Dan who got passed a 6ft 5" guys kick, who was so slow with his moves because of his size (and ego) she destroyed him with a low punch to the guts and a leg sweep. Probable the single most effective lesson I've ever seen. Most of the girls in my school atheletic team back in the day could out last, out run, out sprint and out jump probably most of their year class mates of both sexs, god knows what it would be like in this day and age.
This is a film. A sci FICTION film. I really enjoy these kind of movies for the fantastic spectacle , the breathtaking imagination ,the sheer escapism and the great stories they often tell. Not because they adhere to every rule and regulation in this sorry world.
If your heart didn't beat a little faster when you saw that Death Star shot or those Walkers then why are you even here?

And I would point out there are dozens of different designs for tanks in the real world. So an AT AT that has slightly longer legs for wading on an ocean planet, or one that is squatter and more heavily armoured for a higher gravity world isn't much of a surprise is it????

PS I've blocked several people over the last few months but everytime somebody replies to them with their quote I get to see it. Don't feed the trolls, they are fat enough already.

Indeed - this is one of the things that interested me the most. The back of that robot looks a LOT like the back plate of Stormtrooper armour, making me think this is some kind of Imperial droid. Now, is it chasing them, or is it running with them (i.e. reprogrammed a la T2 Arnie)?

It's the way these posts are interpreted. Generally I'm not offended by anything. But I enjoy taking pokes at individuals "feels"... lol (GROW UP) Yea I have a gripe about how these films are depicted. Bring a stick to a gun fight... you're going to loose.Make a character look ridiculous and out of place/time, yea I have a gripe. Realistic "female" hero roles in an action, "BAD-ASS ROLE".... where are these girls in real life on the front lines?Navy Seals? Rangers? Delta? No they don't exist. So no I don't want to see unrealistic depictions of so called "heroes". I want to see something tangible and realistic, to make me feel about the actions and actor involved.
"It's the way these posts are interpreted"? I have no idea what you're getting at because, as I said, I did't even understand what you meant in the first place when you referred to "racism." I thought you didn't take issue with race so why is it even relevant? (BTW that's a rhetorical question. I'm not even interested in an explanation at this point.)

"GROW UP"?

Between the two of us you're the one who is whinging on about these issues despite the fact that I've accepted your aesthetic differences with the presentation of the new Star Wars films. Until this post I didn't know you also hated TFA so much. I'm glad we can agree that RotJ sucked. It's hard to find folks who understand and agree with my differences with that film, but I liked TFA very much so we're going to have to agree to disagree there.

I also understand how a frail-looking female kicking everyone's butt in a physical fight can make it hard to believe. I could have easily felt the same way as you. It just so happens I don't have a problem suspending disbelief. I guess when I find a story and characters engaging I'm less inclined to scrutinize the details such as, say, the nonsensical and inconsistent depiction of force powers. (e.g. In ESB why didn't Vader just use the force to keep Luke from falling?)

I've kept my end of the conversation good-natured. Evidently you're taking the discussion way too seriously.

This takes place more like 5-10 years before TESB. I don't think Mon Mothma has ever been shown in front of one of those green battle map things in the movies?

OK- i'm just combining things for the sake of time. We've seen the green map thing several times and Mon Mothma is in the same robe 15 years later. Not that she was in front of the map thing in the same robe. Better?

For the most part I'm pretty excited- but now we have the same walkers 30 years- or whatever- before Empire? And Mon Mothma is still in the same dress in front of the same green battle map thing? Everything doesn't have to be the same, does it? But like I said, still pretty excited.

Bad Star Wars is still Star Wars. Worst case scenario- you get it.

This film takes place in the days just before the beginning of ANH so at most 2 years prior to ESB. Felicity Jones is dressed as an Imperial gunner I think, not a TIE pilot. Rumors regarding Vader in the film is that it's more then a cameo, he engages in a combat sequence where he is described as brutal.

At face value this seems disappointing. Too many tie-ins just shrinks the universe all over again. I don't need to see Vader in action again. I also don't need to revisit the detention block or the trash compactor.
