Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Yeah, I don't think it necessarily implies they used them before but there's nothing that directly contradicts it either. Certainly open to interpretation.

On a tangent but since we know space fighters such as X-wings can fly quite capably in an atmosphere (TFA certainly emphasizes this) I do wonder what purpose combat airspeeders really serve. Of course the real answer is obviously "it's just a movie", but my head-canon had always assumed there was some technical reason (greatly reduced atmospheric performance, etc) they didn't use X-wings (or any Y-wings present but not seen) against the AT-ATs on Hoth but TFA kinda dispels that notion.

I think the only reason they didn't use them is because they were using them to protect the transports. The goal of the speeders was just to slow them down as much as possible while everyone else bugged out, plus the speeders were probably a lot more maneuverable in close quarters. Why throw those precious x-wings and y-wings at them when they are really needed to be keeping ties etc off the transports

They'll probably show better shots of the Death or Shadow Troopers or whatever they'll be called in tomorrow's teaser, but these guys are pretty tall, well over 6'. Not quite Phasma tall but still an imposing height. Something to keep in mind if you want to cosplay as one.

That's an excellent point. They even state they can only afford two fighter escorts per transport so obviously they are stretched thin.

And Rogue One trailer!!!! *squeeeeal!*

There's that and the fact that at least some of the speeder pilots are also regular starfighter pilots so it's not just a matter of fighters but also a matter of enough pilots to act as a rear guard and pilot the escorts as well.

Yes this. I'm hoping we get to see some X-Wings take out AT-ATs in the new movies. There was a great scene in one of the X-Wing novels where they encounter AT-ATs and Wedge says something like "We're not in speeders this time..." and they launch torpedoes at them.

The new troopers look very cool! I'm hoping this movie will be good.

All I'm seeing is a 3 second clip of the trooper...

Am I missing something???

Me, I think that black trooper is this time period's version of Imperial Commando, as the design continues to evolve from the Republic Commando into the Storm Commando of the post-Yavin period...

I still think "Scarab Trooper" is a stupid name for the other guys, though.

Well we were told this takes place before a new hope, but what if it starts just before, then catches up during the film?
