Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

I finally got plans settled for next Friday our theater finally put tickets up for sale. 7 1/2 days till the 10am show!

**stupid work xmas party...**

Sorry it was in a release recently discussing the backstory of two of the characters.
So? The info wasn't previously in this thread.

Guess it's time to spoiler tag this thread. I stopped watching the trailers and ads a couple of weeks ago because too much is out already.

Opening 1/6 in China. I wouldn't be suprised for it to do better box office then TFA with two well known Asian actors.

This is highly likely. I remember reading about a football (soccer) game a few years back. 2 English premier league teams, not the top 2 by any stretch, both had a Chinese player, it was estimated that it was going to be one of the most viewed games ever because of the Chinese interest. Not even a cup final or major international, just a regular league game. The Chinese really come out and support their guys. Wish I could remember what teams it was.

Great article!

This is me: I put it [the movie] in and watched the first 10 minutes and I thought, “I know what I’m going to do for the rest of my life.” It wasn’t be a filmmaker — it was sit and watch “Star Wars” over and over and over until I die. It just felt like, “Life is going to be good now because whatever happens, I can always put ‘Star Wars’ on.”

Fixed that for you.

Yes, and let's not go down the pandering path again. Film as a form of entertainment should have broad appeal. As such it's appropriate for the characters in the film to directly appeal to various demographics, especially when a characters ethnicity is irrelevant to the story. That's an opportunity to allow for some diversity of ethnicity and culture in the casting. I rather like the idea of a young Chinese gal or lad seeing a Star Wars film with two characters they may have more of a connection with then the British Anglo actors. That's a gateway to them becoming new fans.

While I did do that to highlight the pandering sense, I always found it weird when people dont acknowledge particular types of people when they KNOW what they are. While of course youre entitled to your opinion, I personally dont care for that kind of stuff in the casting because its obvious to what it is. I agree with you, film is a form of entertainment, but in this case thats clearly what it is. Its unfortunate though, but whatever. Its not like its going to stop. But the blind chinese fighter trope is kind of worn out. When I saw that in the trailer I got discouraged. But like you said, ethnicity is irrelevent to the story, so why could they only have a connection if they look the same? We know why they are doing it, thats what proves my point. Its just annoying, and I find it distateful for everyone. Its a tactic that is being employed more and more for that Chinese yuan. Its not like they are adding people from all over the world to diversify. Its specifically chinese. For me, its hard to see beyond that.

I guess you can blame Donnie Yen for that because he had a LOT of input into that character apparently he pretty much shaped the character himself.

Am I the only one that is tired of that type of character? Who knows, maybe Im the minority here. Just testing the waters to see if anyone else agreed with me. *shrug*

I don't watch enough of those type movies to be tired of it.

They can't customize each movie to everyone's likes and dislikes or there would be hundreds of version of the films. Some people will always s*** on certain things they don't like.

It just seems cliche. And Darth Vader isnt an example, he isnt a type of character, he IS a character. If thats what you meant by posting those pics at least. Im not sure.

Incorrect. I wrote Asian as I was unclear if they both were actually Chinese. And you haven't addressed the very cogent argument I put forth as to why this kind of casting is a welcome, inclusive thing.

Everything has been done before. Nothing is 100 percent original. There are elements of things done in the past in EVERYTHING now. Create something you think is truly original, I am sure in can be picked apart and things found done before.

Bryancd Because I dont believe in diversity for the sake of diversity. If I were a chinese actor, I wouldnt want to play the stereotypical chinese character. I would want to play something else that isnt relegated to a stereotype, which all it does is perpetuate it. The thing that is annoying, is that you know damn well why they include chinese actors, and chinese locations, and added chinese paraphenalia(michael bay, transformers comes to mind). The studios are looking for that money. That doesnt bother you?

I agree with this. But Im also not a creative person working on a franchise with a team of other people to come up with something slightly new than "blind chinese guy fights well". That trope runs from games, to movies, to TV, just thought they could come up with something better is all Im saying.

Yes the studio's derive an economic benefit but again, what of the fact that being inclusive is a gateway for new cultures to be a part of the story. You need to broaden your consideration. If a Chinese boy watches a film with no one like him its an alienating experience. Let's make it more welcoming.
