How does a small band of rebels have the authority to arrest, detain and sentence somebody? Judging by her reluctance in the trailer it appears more like kidnapping and coersion. Hope they handle that better than its looking at the moment.

Exactly, her scenes were cut, so she wasn't actually in the prequels. Therefore her being in R1 won't make people who hated the prequels boo at the screen.
And where was she in the background? If I - someone who really dug the prequels - didn't see her back there, I doubt casual fans - who wouldn't even know to look for her - would have noticed her either.

Simple, they found her sneaking into, on, or around a Rebel base or accidentally "making" some Rebel spies. I don't think that they went out of their way to arrest her, she was probably just somewhere at the wrong place at the wrong time.

She appears amongst the crowd who greet Palpatine on the landing pad after he is rescued from Grievous. Just before the shot where Lucas sandwiched Palpatine between his two daughters.
Or perhaps she ran afoul of the law on a planet with a government sympathetic with the Alliance and they turn her over. Either way, it really doesn't matter one bit to the story they are telling.

There's a TIE Bomber hanging in the hangar when Vader's shuttle arrives at the beginning.
That's pretty cool they're using a TCW character in this!

I think Jyn was just a regular ol criminal surviving the galaxy. She caught the eye of some Rebel Officers and they wanted her skills. Luke was a farmboy, Anakin was a slave, Han was a smuggler, they all started out small but made a huge difference. Just my thought
& her dad being a designer of the Death Star, might be another reason

Luke was dragged into the conflict when the big evil empire landed at his door and bbq'ed his family. Anakin was freed/resued by Jedi, pre Empire days and Han was hired to smuggle a couple of people.
Non of them were arrested by a bunch of criminals and forced on to a highly dangerous mission in order to get a lighter sentence. I find it ethically dubious and it loses some of my sympathy for the rebellion.
Er at this point we have no idea what the reason is so you may want to hold up on any "disdain". It could just as easily be she was stealing rebel shipments so they laid a trap for her. In the Star Wars comics we do see that the Rebellion has a prison where they put criminals and stuff so they do some policing.
