Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

Posted earlier in the thread. He's pretty good but I'd rather an actor who can do something with the role than an impressionist.

Bingo. Having the right look and the right voice isn't enough. You've gotta be able to actually act. I mean, it's a damn fine impression, no question, but just saying the old lines doesn't make for a good film.

That said, I'd have zero problems going with an unknown in the role.....which, of course, they'll never do.

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

I would probably point and laugh at myself then roll my eyes in embarrassment! :lol But history will repeat itself and I'll probably do it all again come Episode VII :lol

With no apologies...! :lol

Wow, I had the calendar... don't know whatever became of it... :cry

I never had that one...:unsure

there are a number of items I don't know what happened to. I kept so much, sold so much, even lost a few things that I thought I kept... but then I moved probably 20 times in 3 states so I may have left a few things behind here and there. :confused

If you've moved around that much, then you've most likely left something behind...:wacko

That's easy to do. Have a kid. I have my son and see him collecting his toys and cards the same way I did and I can see he has the same feeling of excitement and joy as I did. I just love watching his enthusiasm when he loves something so much and it takes me back to when i was a kid. And he loves my props too. He's only 5 but I include him in whatever I'm making. I'm also sure 99% of people feel the same way you do.

Ben

It does, it's wild to see my 9 year old scrawl and drawing of balloons on my birthday! It's the only thing I ever wrote in the calendar. 9 year olds tend not to have busy schedules needing organizing. :)

I don't have children but if it excites them today half as much as it did us when we were kids, then it's all still worth it...

I'm going to disagree with that. I don't think LucasFilm has ever been "star" driven in their casting, I don;t see any indication that Kathleen Kennedy would be, and I don't think Disney would want to go down that road, especially if the costs is high. I think lesser known actors will be filling these vacancies.

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

Nobody knew Hayden Christiansen before he was Anakin and few knew Portman. Sure, SLJ and Jimmy Smitts should never have been in the films but Star Wars is pretty good at working with relative unknowns. I wouldn't be surprised if they pull someone out of their hat like they did with Young Indy.

Don't forget E1 being anchored by Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson who were both very well known.

I don't care who they choose as long as it's not anyone who'll over shadow the film. Avoid huge names who usually get their name above the title for example.

Yep. Star Wars has always mixed a few experienced folks in with the new guys. However the protagonist of the trilogy was a fresh face and I'd expect that with a young Han Solo. :thumbsup

You calling Natalie Portman a relative unknown? :confused

Star Wars turned out to be a step down for her, regarding what she was capable of.

At the time of her casting yes. Her claim to fame was that she was the President's daughter in Mars Attacks. In 1999 nobody knew who she was.

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

In 1999 she wasn't unheard of, but she certainly wasn't at the level she's at today. Her major high profile roles were in Leon and Mars Attacks and a couple romcoms. She was a bit better known than Christensen, but not by much. Certainly she wasn't at the level of, say, Ewan MacGregor or Sam Jackson.

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

WOW... okay. Sure.

I take it you had been following her career long before TPM then?

TPM is what put her into the spotlight. AOTC is what put HC into the spotlight.

Much like although Harrison Ford had been in other stuff before Star Wars he was *relatively* unheard of.

Same with Mark Hamill. Had a spot on General Hospital but a relative unknown. Carrie Fisher as well.

Sure, they're household names now but NP certainly wasn't in '99.

re: Star Wars Standalone Film (Dir: Gareth Edwards)

Seriously. What did Portman do before Episode I? Leon, Mars Attacks... Er, she had a small part in Heat, and what, a couple of romantic comedies nobody saw?

Natalie Portman wasn't big in '99.

X Whatever. I was a huge fan of Leon and was the only person who knew who she was amongst my non-STAR WARS friends when she was cast. So there you go.

That's neat. I was also a huge fan of Leon, and recognized Portman when I saw her in TPM. I don't believe that necessarily means she was a big star at the time.

Sounds like he's agreeing with you. ;)

I for one would love to see some EU characters get tied in with seperate films at this point. Like Dash Rendar, or Mara Jade. Or hey how about a movie totally about Jar Jar Binks......kidding...don't kill me.

LOL!! Yes, I was agreeing with everyone regarding Portman's relative obscurity in popular culture in 1997-'98. :)
