Robocop Reboot (Pre-release)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of it, I just don't let the fog of nostalgia fool me into thinking it was anything other than a fun B movie with a cool suit.
 
I have to agree with Jarvis, with the obvious addendum that the original film is an iconic representation of a "cult" film. Pretty much ignored by "serious" cinemaphiles, but rabidly enjoyed by its fans (and I'm one of them).

My biggest problem with this new one, aside from the suit, is that it's completely ignoring everything that made the original so fun. It was never about the action and the explosions like it is today (and like this new one will be), it's the satire and tongue-in-cheek dark humor that the original had. Didn't they explicitly state that they were removing all of those elements? No, thank you. I've got the original, I can be happy with that. IMO, this is one of those movies that doesn't need to be remade for any reason, but they're doing it anyway.

Maybe this Mac Pro Robocop body gets destroyed early in the movie and they stick him in a proto-type which is just the original body? (I know, I know...)

It's a shame that most of the problems in this design could have been fixed with a few cans of silver spray paint. Maybe the story and acting will be good enough to transcend the design banality.
 
It's a shame they don't just post their conceptual renderings on a place like here for people to rip apart. They get a much better end product.

And I definitely agree with the original being somewhat of a parody... I'd say mostly ripping on corporations taking over in areas they have no 'business" getting involved in.

I remember going to see Robocop as sort of a joke back in the day> We thought the title was funny and were expecting something silly.
We were blown away at a fantastic Sci Fi story of this viciously murdered man who resurrected through technology destined to be an automaton slave, manages to recover his humanity. All the technology, all the attempts to turn him into a machine, could not supress the human spirit. The Poledouris soundtrack was superior.

Murphy. And he smiles.

He's back.


It's a helluva great movie.
 
This is being released in February, isn't that when studios release all the crap movies? The studio must not have much faith in this.

cinematic significance ends at the suit? what kind of planet are you living on?
only someone who has taste in Michael Bay type scripts would say that!

The original is the most significant piece of analysis on the corporate takeover of everything, and it predicted with 100% accuracy what would happen in the global environment, not to mention tons of other things.



The original 1987 robocop is more significant than this crappy remake could ever be.

Go listen to Peter Weller's recent analysis of the movie after a screening, its on youtube. He himself went back and rewatched it and found it more significant, relevant than any one. I agree with him.

The 1987 original should be kept as a national classic, its an incredible piece of work.

Only someone seriously on crack would consider this remake to be anything remotely close to the level of the original movie!

This remake is almost dead on certain to be another garbage remake like Total Recall!
Verhoeven was crazy, but at least he had the balls to put something on screen that was incredible.

I got to see the movie with some fellow prop collectors in 35mm during a presentation at the 2012 Dallas International Film Festival. Peter Weller was there along with many of the local film producers who worked on the film. It was fun and I got to ask some questions about the film. Peter Weller talked long about the symbolism of the movie and how the new film can't hope to match the level and sophistication of the original and how he doesn't envy the makers of the new movie.

Good analysis... and, man... Weller is intense.
 
While it's a freaking disgrace, I can't help but think that the recent filing for bankruptcy by Detroit is some form of viral marketing...or at least provides a tasteless opportunity for some.
 
No matter how good buzz this movie gets, I have dwindling interest in this remake, despite liking the actor Joel Kinnaman and his performance in The Killing. Maybe seeing the trailer will change my mind.

EricVespe: First footage from RoboCop borrows a whole lot from District 9 and Afghanistan Iron Man stuff in terms of visuals and tone.

EricVespe: The big clip that just played looks slick, but I get a sick feeling that it's going to just be a more boring version of Verhoeven's film.

EricVespe: The Middle East stuff was actually my favorite part, seeing the ED-209s in action securing the streets was interesting.

devincf : ROBOCOP looks very different from the original. That makes me hopeful.
