Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

I've been making progress on my Rey costume, so I thought I'd share two things I've finished.

For the bracer, I used 2 colors of upholstery pleather glued back to back and for the boots, I modified a pair of faux suede boots that I got at Walmart. I may still revisit the paint effect I did on the boots, but otherwise, I consider these things done. I took photos of the process of making each of them and put them in a gallery with some explanation in case it might help anyone else.

I noticed on one of the bluray extra features that there are 2 cylinder shaped canisters that go into those loops on the backpack strap above the canister with the chain. I don't think that was shown anywhere before. I'll try to find it, get a screen shot and put up a pic....it may have been on the target exclusive extras, can't really remember.

Hmmm... I'm going to have to watch for that! the loops were empty in every version of the costume display I've seen and I'd wondered what went in them. Did they look like the ones on the backpack flap?

Now Imma have to go home and look through my blu ray and try to find it.

Was it in an in-film scene, or a behind the scenes extra?

yeah, I thought you might be interested in this find. Here are the pics, sorry for the bad quality. It is at around 17:30 on the main blu-ray bonus feature thing, I forgot the title.

I'm not sure it was shown in the movie at all. This was apparently at a costume fitting.

definitely different.. in this iteration you can see the end of the British web strap left on at the top of the webbing. The C7 and D23 displays didn't have that. Ugghhh... oh well. It's still neat to see different versions and track what they kept and what they changed.

It's hard to tell with the blur, but the top greeblie might be one of her goggle flashlights.. it has the same overall shape.

Heck, i JUST realized after pouring back over all of my C7 reference pics that the large bottom canister on the back of the backpack is smaller around than the leather endcap which it goes into... like by alot!

Each time I look i see something different :wacko

this is the best I could come up with that might be them. Not sure though, originally I thought that was the adjustment on the backpack strap, but then I saw another shot from the movie that shows that part much lower. I had to crank up the brightness on this shot because it's really dark on the movie scene.

Since they are removable, I will just make them when I do the other backpack parts....can always leave them off.

I noticed the strap end too...but I don't think you can tell if that was used on the movie version or not. It's so small and that whole shoulder pad strap area is really hard to see.

Hello Everyone :)

Does anyone have a reference photo that shows the top of this canister from Rey's pack? In this photo I have it looks like there MAY be a hole in the top, but nothing definitive. I am trying to model it for my daughter's costume and I just can't tell for sure if there is a hole in the top or not... frustrating. :facepalm

Contec, you look great!

And Karolina, you too! I love, love, love costuming on a budget. I find the challenge of coming up with something from nothing much more interesting than buying things straight up. I've done both now, and Rey is a combination for me (I bought the boots, for example - after much angst over the single most expensive piece of clothing I've ever bought in forty years on this planet other than my parka, but made most everything else), but overall, I find the thrift shop game so much fun! :)

Good job, guys!

Okay I'm in desperation and frustration.
I am at the moment dying which I fear and hate soooo much.
Please tell me how you guys dyed each piece.
Tunic: I dyed it with a little Tan and now it looks a lil dark than the pics.
Pants: started off white. Dyed with Gray and Taupe but now it looks a lil purple
Wrap dress
Headwrap

For the couple people who asked about the silk on the pants, it's ordered but I'm still waiting for it to come in, I'll post pics once it's dyed and distressed. I'm still trying to settle 100% on the color for her pants since they actually look, to me, like a really faded army green. I've ordered a few green and grey dyes and I have a few browns, so I'll do a few tests before dyeing the whole piece. Any thoughts on this? Pantone IDs would be best, and if I come up with a good dye blend to match I'll share the ratio here (though they'll be specific to the brand of acid dyes I ordered, it'll be a good start for other dyes).

As for the rest, I just ordered a pre-painted blaster (as I can't weather things to save my life). It was a get-well gift from my parents, who noticed me sadly mooning over the boots and props I can't afford because of the medical bills. Bad reason to get one, but I'm still over the moon about it. I just hope it's ready and in before PAX.

Lastly, my cork leather came in! It had to ship from Portugal so I expected it to take ages, but it didn't. Now I can start work on my own boots. I still need to find some memory foam to make more comfy inserts and a cheap pair of shoes to destroy for a sole, but I can do the bulk of the work while I wait to be able to get those.

akitzman: I'm still waiting on my fabric and using a different line and type of dye, so I can only guess. However, dyeing is one of my things, so. For the tunic, if yours looks too dark you can either wash it in really hot water and hope for a bleed, or use RIT color remover. The color remover will either lighten it or take the dye out entirely. If it gets too light, just put it back in a dyebath but use a mixture that is either a bit more dilute than before, or for less time.

For the the pants, if you've gone too purple that was probably from the grey dye (I've had that issue with RIT dye). Your only options are to remove the dye as described above, or to try to overdye with a contrasting color. Sometimes the taupe will do it, you'll need to aim in the orange/yellow family. The only problem is that it could tweak the color too far that way or just turn a strange brown. I'd suggest dye tests for this if you have any fabric left over from your main piece or from altering your pants. If you are altering and haven't cut anything off yet, just steal a couple square inches from a hem.

It'll be okay. Breathe! Don't die! Only dye.

Sadly, likely many times. It's trial and error and depends a lot on your fabric and such. There is no magic combination here.

I second what was said above. Use a dye remover and hot washing to remove dye if needed or overdye. I dyed my pants several times (overdyeing) and eventually got a color I like. My wrap was remade three times because I dyed it and wasn't happy with it.

My mixtures:

Tunic - no dye with my fabric. Just a light dusting with tan spray paint.
Pants - dyed several times with taupe and grey and tan and I couldn't tell you what produced the final color because it was several treatments.
Wrap dress - in the end, I used just taupe (my mix is somewhere in this thread) on a white fabric and then oversprayed it with tan spray paint.

RIT taupe comes out far more grey than tan for me and, yes, there is a bit of a purple overtone to it. Thus why I added some tan to my pants eventually and added tan paint to the wrap. That made a huge difference for me. I know my colors still aren't perfect, as it's a hard costume to match, but I'm happy with them for now.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

I kept working on both the tunic and pants that it finally dried out match okay. Man that was a struggle but I got it.

I am going to work on the head wrap and wrap dress soon. Probably using the taupe and a bit of tan.
I've noticed that taupe has a purple overtone to it that's why I was freaking out a bit. But once it dried, it matched very well.

Grey does that purple thing also...dyed a pair of pants for my Altair costume and I freaked out same way.
