Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

My pants started out a very light tan. I hit them with taupe and tan originally (I find that taupe is coming out more grey than tan for me), then a touch of just taupe later, I think. I sadly didn't write down my exact combos of dye, and it was a trial and error thing, so I'm not a huge help with the specifics, but honestly, the color is hard to match and your fabric is going to be different than mine. So, if you can, do a test dye batch first. And remember that you can always dye them again/make them darker, but you can't easily make them lighter/take dye out. Yes, you can bleach or use dye remover, but...it's not great. Doing multiple shorter times and weaker dyes is generally better. If they're too light, then you can dye them again. Too dark, and, well, you're often out of luck.

But if you can, do a test dye of the fabric first to see how it'll come out first. I can't even think of how many times I dyed my scarf fabric before I found the last one (fifteen minutes in a bath of 3 teaspoons taupe only, then dusted with tan spray paint).

Thanks for the information. I bought the grey silkessesnce fabric from JoAnn since her pants look grayish tan to me. But now I am having second thoughts about the color of the fabric.I will experiment with the fabric and see what color I end up getting.

As for the scarf fabric, I will either go with your dyeing ratio or kristenhenry70's ratio she posted somewhere in this thread. God thing I bought extra scarf fabric to try the different ratios. :)

My scarf fabric was the white cotton gauze stuff from Joann, which is not the same as the vicose a lot of people are using. So my dye results likely different. And that was my third try. I tried more tan at first and got too much yellow/tan. Then I tried less of everything and it was too faint, but somehow it was also a bit too short, so I didn't bother redying that one. The third one worked out well. If you get enough fabric to do the wrap without seams in extra places, you have enough for making two, so...yeah, I remade the whole thing. I'm pretty happy with my current color.

As for your pants, if they started out grey, I'd probably go just with taupe or even tan? Tough call. But you have fabric, so you have extra. Do test batches on small swatches of fabric. That's your best bet.

Good luck!

Dyeing can be tough, but you'll get it!

Kristen, thanks for leading this hunt.
I had received an email today from the Boots company apologizing that they could not help us in this situation.
They directed me to their US affiliate.
I have a request into them now.
Robert

That might be very helpful, as we are getting close to the 50 pcs. mark, and my contact is able to find 4-5 at any given store where she is. If we could get a case or two from the States it would simplify matters greatly.

Mine was very "on-the-fly". I started with prolly 2/3 taupe and 1/3 tan. But then i went about adding more as I was swishing it in the dyebath, too. It really was a happy accident. :wacko

Keep in mind the launch bay ones are totally made up items, and the goggles in particular look waaaay different than the screen used ones.

Been coloring my costume with Tea and instant coffee. The head wrap is not fully dry yet so that explains the funny pose, and the bad quality of the photo is explained because i took the photo right now when its dark outside and the only light is from my ceiling lights,

I think i gonna remove a little of the coffee color from the headwrap, looks too much right now.

Hey, I've been following this thread for a while, and just recently joined. This is the absolute best Rey costume thread I've yet seen! @kristenhenry70, can I be added to the bandage list too? (Three)

I have just started my costume. I hope to go full-on scavenger eventually, but for now I'm starting with the basic costume.
I have done the mock-up for my pants, and got my staff from KyleGilbertDesign on Etsy. It's made using aluminum pipe as the base, which I like a lot! I sanded and repainted the middle sections, and am going to re-wrap the center with different fabric. I love the weight of it!
I also have the viscose for the wrap dress (thanks once more, kristenhenry70!) fabric for the belt bag, and the Enfield slings.
So, just beginning the costume, but I'm having a ton of fun with it!
Just out of curiosity, has anyone made the boots from scratch yet? It seems to me that it could be done with a wool tweed and felt using a moccasin pattern.

Hello everyone! It's my first post here but I've been following this thread since the end of December. Thanks to all the information I've found here, I'm finishing my Rey cosplay. You all have been incredibly helpful :) I'll upload some photos of my costume soon.
For now, I'd like to refer to that:

I made a pair :) Exactly, they were done with wool tweed and scraps of leather. It's was a very time consuming process but I'm very happy how the boots turned out, and the most important thing is - it cost me about $12! :)

1st photo - original boots, 2nd - work in progress, 3rd - finished boot! :)

Also made the boots, for about 6 bucks from some thrift store boots, an army blanket, leather scraps, and EVA for the soles. Definitely recommend it! Especially if the Pozu boots aren't something you'd get extra use out of, with everyday wear.

Another thought for those who can't justify the PoZu price, cover a similarly shaped boot with fabric. I had part of an old army blanket around and used it to cover some thrift-store boots using hot glue, and contact cement for the EVA foam soles. Sure they aren't perfect, but at 6 bucks, I don't really care!

For the sole, I cut a sole-shaped piece of 1/2" EVA, with a slightly larger 1/4" layer on top (to give that slight overhang). Over that is a bit of cotton cord that I have yet to stain/paint. I need to pick up a better lacing for the back, but the green is just to show how it works.

They still need painting and weathering, but here's how they look so far.

I also made my shoes by covering a pair of boots with fabric from a old shirt and a bit of leather. Just hot glued it to the boot.
