Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

No progress for me on Rey yet. *sigh* Lack of money and work REALLY bites....

In the meantime, here's some happy news. Po-zu just messaged me about a competition they're having that I wanted to pass along to everyone here! They need pictures of their boots on folks, so they're having a photo competition with neat prizes. Check it out! I'm going to enter, so if I win, I can "buy" a pair of Rey boots for someone who can't afford it. kiki emoticon:)

Is anyone going to add the old flight helmet she puts on or maybe even a small replica of the stuffed pilot she has in her stuff? To carry around with you?

JDM Ninja and I discussed breaking down the staff made with PVC and decided to keep it in one piece. There is a lot of flex and give to the PVC pipe and getting the cut and screw placement just right is a challenge. Just some food for thought.

Food for thought indeed. I wondered about flex issues. Perhaps using a dowel or metal pole would limit this, or perhaps one could fill the PVC with something? Sand would be too heavy, but maybe a stiff foam? Thinking, thinking, thinking. We shall see.

I was planning on the same thing! :D

Hadn't thought about it until now, but that would be fun!

I noticed the doll on my second viewing, by the way, and wasn't sure I'd seen it correctly until now. ;)

I've been lurking in this thread for a while. I went ahead and bought my boots a couple weeks ago, but I waited on the 37 signal satchel and now I wish I hadn't, obviously. I just purchased a much more reasonably priced green one and I'm going to attempt to remove the dye so I can make it the right color. I'll let you guys know how that goes, though it might be a little bit before it arrives.

Thanks for everyone's hard work on this thread!

Something else we talked about was possibly cutting the PVC in half and using the right-fit dowels on the inside of the hollow tube. You could use those to attach the two pieces, it would provide a rigid structure, and you wouldn't have to worry so much about the flex.

For all the people who (like me) can't justify dropping $200+overseas shipping on a pair of boots and are making your own instead: the Celebrations description of the boots is incorrect. There is no leather in the boots; the cord, tabs, and heel are all actually cork leather. I found both dark brown cork leather and cork leather cord on Etsy, so if you want to add just that little extra bit of screen accuracy, that's something you can do!

The materials in the real boot:

Upper: 100% wool tweed (basketweave pattern), dark brown
Lining: 100% wool felt, white
Heel accent and tabs: cork leather, dark brown
Laces: cork leather cord, dark brown
Sole: coconut husk, latex coating

Rather than covering pre-existing boots, I'm felting some brown wool basketweave fabric in the washer, lining it with white wool felt (as in the real boots) and interfacing, and adding a bootshaft and other modifications to this pattern to make her boots from scratch. For the soles, I intend to use four layers of cork in a modified version of this tutorial (with the top layer being slightly larger around than the lower layers, to replicate the weird overhang on the real boots' soles), then coat the entire sole with beige Plasti-Dip rubber coating to look like latex. Unfortunately I don't see any good way to duplicate the lattice pattern on the real bootsoles, but the basic shape of the sole and boot should be pretty spot-on. If my acryllic felt mockup works as planned, I'll try to whip up a full photo tutorial for everyone.

Indeed. Any type of rigid thing inside would do. I haven't had any issues with PVC flexing with my other staff, but this one is a bit longer...we shall see...it's not like PVC is expensive, so I can try multiple ways of doing it and see what works best.

Nice find!

I spent $10 at my local military surplus store for a US model that is similar. It's a WWII US Mess Kit Cover, and I think it'll do just fine. I may not even modify it, other than the ALICE clip.

Can you post a picture of the US model? I am wondering if I can find anything similar up in Canada

Not directly costume related, but I've recently received "Rey's Survival Guide" from Amazon. It's a children-ish book, but does provide some back story for Rey.

I saw this page, and while it explains the origin of the helmet and the x-wing pilot doll, what really took me was how precious the story for them was:

adorable... AND intriguing. Perhaps Dosmit Raeh was (at least in Rey's imagination) a role model for herself?

Saw that book at work.

The thing I find wrong with the helmet is the paint job is wrong, it should look like Porkins since he was from that squadron.

Anyone have an opinion on how tall the staff should be for someone who's 5' tall? I want it to be proportional for me, so I'm thinking of making it 66". Does that sound about right?

Found a really good channel on the YouTubes about post apocalyptic wear and distressing things to make them look old. Figured it might come in handy when distressing some of the bits and pieces for this costume or others anyone might be making:

Nuclear Snail is the best!

I discovered him when I made my Mad Max, and he's fabulous.

Hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, but eagerly following all the information you've collected. So, looking for a good option for Rey's bag that is available here in Germany I found this small bag from the German Bundeswehr. I think, this could be reworked into Rey's bag pretty easily. And, they also have (used and new) Alice Clips.

Happy to able to also supply some information - even if it might only be useful for German/ European cosplayers - that's the shop: http://www.asmc.de/Transport/Taschen/Taschen/Umhaengetaschen/BW-Brotbeutel-khaki-p.html

I also found an American (?) version of the shop, but I don't know about shipping options or cost:
