Suitable option for vest fabric? http://prairiewoolens.com/Wool_Fabric/black-gray-woolens/ww-steel-wool
Still on the pricy side for me right now, so I'm continuing my research. But man, this is a tough one.
So I went with this fabric and here are some of the pics. I don't have the vest 100% complete yet. I still need to get the shoulder pads on and do some hand stitching on it, but it's mostly together. I ordered 2 yards and it comes about 58" off the bolt. I can't see a scenario where the 2 yards would not be enough to do it all... even for a full figured lady. I have about 50% extra left over. Might have to go back and add some interfacing behind the collar because it's already starting to get a little floppy and it looks fairly stiff in the film.
Princess seams were a pain. I could not get them stitched in without looking bunchy, so I came up with the idea to lightly spray the wool in those areas with water, then iron them to try to shrink up the wool and tighten things up......luckily that worked. Part of the hand stitching I do will be to add the black thread over those seams just like Rey's has. They are sort of hard to see in the herringbone pattern.
edit:
Currently link for it is:

...but for some reason it's not showing yardage available now..... maybe out of stock?
I also have the bag done. I may go back and trim the canvas backing on the strap a little more, it seems slightly too wide. And I might do a little more color weathering to the enfield sling part. I'll post up when I have the write-up done for it. There are very few shots of the lower buckle, but looking closely, I think it is possible there is something on the strap between it and the bag. It could be some kind of a small quick release buckle or just extra strapping. Can't really tell. For now, I left the black metal tab on the strap I used, but stitched it so I can just cut it off later if I don't want it.

We've also learned that with the wool gauntlets, you will want something under it to stop the wool scratching on your arms. As of now we are going with compression sleeves, then the amazon grey wraps for the upper arms, then the gauntlets over those and it seems to work ok. I used the same pattern with the seam offset for both, but flipped one over to make them mirror images of each other.
