Recaster question

I don't mean any offense to anyone . I'm still learning about that part of the system. But in the same vain , you shouldn't judge a buyer if that is all they can spend on something. The typical ebayer buyer that isn't involved in the " prop community" doesn't know that unwritten law. education is the key. Now I know and I will not buy from them.
Yes, education is key.

Though, if you don't have the money to buy the real one, it is no excuse to buy recasts. Buying recasts helps kill the real artists desire to make new things available, so while they are making money off someone else's work, they are also killing new cool offerings being made.

We can't reach those outside the community, those who don't know the real deal from the recast, but we can put the word out there and hopefully it'll spread by word of mouth and leaving less and less sales for these vultures.

Though, sadly, we also see the reverse trend that when highlighted here, it sends unscrupulous buyers their way as they don't care about the original artist, they only care about getting the sculpt at any quality and at as low a price as possible. That's the double edged sword about this whole mess.

But please don't buy recasts. I say this because it directly affects me and what I will be able to buy. Yes, I'm selfish that way. People with the cool stuff clam up when the general public embraces recasting.

It sounds crazy but I swear the Iron Man looks like the MR helmet. It's hard to tell from the little pictures but the eye to eye tip distance and cheekbone contours along with the eye tip to temple distance looks just like the MR helmet to me.

didn't know MR made an iron man helmet :confused

In this case it's Museum Replicas (not Master) aka Windlass Studios.

I did a trade on the TDH one of my Kroenens for a Clone helmet , The other guy has my Kroenen Mask and I have yet to see the Helmet .
We'll see if my mask ends up on Ebay and I'll let everyone know if the Clone is EFX.
I saw the same Ebay listing I did some research , I have this persons name and address age and myspace page , place of bussiness and phone number , I've been through this before and I can get pretty ruthless in tracking people down .

and replied, its not protocol001 i have amended my previous post.

Do we have an official 'New to the hobby' thread here? That would be most helpfull to new members who are new to the hobby. The thread should have many details regarding 'unwritten rules' and a list of 'bad guys' in the hobby (recasters).
If a thread like this exists somewhere, please don't kill me!! I would rather see someone new to the hobby learn the ropes early rather than make some enemies here by unkowingly supporting recasters.

personaly i think that recasters are parasites who dont have the skills and talent to produce good pieces themselves. I'm new to this forum but not new to the hobby. If someone recast one of my silicone masks or props i would be mortified. These folk need to understand they are taking the food out of others mouths... that said they just wouldnt care. Its been an eye opener reading this forum for a while to see how rampant this recasting business actualy is. good on you all for taking a stand and letting folk know whats going on out there.

The Han Solo bust he's selling is another JRX sculpt too, thanks for bringing it to our attention Fetts.Sobriquet.

I've added his name to the list on my forum thanks, and please if anyone else comes accross recast props being sold it would be appreciated if you let me know or posted on my forum which is made specifically to name these people and other bad sellers and warn buyers and prop makers who is iffy.

Links in my sig.

Yes this would be a great idea as i for one only learnt about recasting a while after getting into this hobby. The blaster builders club have a similar sticky at the top of their main page which was put in after a few people suggested it. With this being the largest prop forum its a perfect place for such a thread or even a sticky at the top. Alternatively something in the terms and conditions that should be read before joining maybe .

A link to propsafe would be useful as well and i urge everyone to visit the place and help out if you can, the more recasters and bad sellers we get on there the better for everyone.

hi everyone! i'm new to the propping hobby, and learning from reading all the info you all have put on hear(TMP your work is how i found this forum:rolleyes:))... i'm not at all trying to start a argument, but would it be wrong of me to spend my time and money to sculpt something then recast it and sell it?? i have been reading multiple threads about people making these remarkable pieces of art then selling some of the recasts to make there money back.... is this wrong? AGIAN I AM NEW....

If you are creating the piece, I.E. you sculpted or created from scratch, then if you mold it and sell copies, you are not recasting. If you buy something, mold it or modify somehow and mold it and sell copies, you are recasting.

that was the question i forgot.... the difference between casting and recasting... thanks for your help! is it possible to put a personal mark in your work to distinguish it's yours?

**Stickies** at the top of each forum room.

I think our "newbs" have learned their Lesson 101 about recasters so the flogging can stop. No more caning the newbs!

First let me state that I dis-agree with recasting in any form and apologise to the members in this thread to whom I am going to offend.

How? can we wax lyrical on how we will track down recasters and call them scum of the earth or whatever you care to call them.

Recasting is as perennial as casting ,We can't even sort it out in our own forum.
If a casting is offered for sale sooner or later it will be recast that is a fact of life.

I have seen in this forum within the last three months a recaster issuing a recaster warning! Someone apart from myself must have read it and the follow up.

Now if that doesn't sum up the state of play I don't know what will.

I have seen some great work on here and I feel for the members who have had their works of art recast TMP for one.

I don't know the answer I am not a judge but sadly I cannot see an end to this matter as long as castings are offered for sale or sold:angel

Well...

Basically, as long as there has been something worth stealing there have probably been thieves.

Does that mean that we should give up on police? Theft has always happened, and will probably always happen. Even thieves will call the police, if their crimes are not known.

It seems that most of the societies I am familiar with still have rules, laws, and penalties for theft, when a thief is caught. The problem is never solved, but the struggle goes on.

As we, as a community, have limited means for enacting punishment, we do what we are able when thieves are found -- we warn others, ban them from our presence, and as much as we are able stop them from profiting by their theft.

Same as everyone else.

I mean no offense to anyone, this is just a question from a noob, I'm only trying to learn here....

Technically, is the artist who scratchbuilds a replica and sells original castings of it himself not already walking the fine line of copyright infringement? Sure a guy can scratch build a lightsaber or blaster replica - but the original design of that prop still belongs to Mr. Lucas.

So we're not really talking about theft of someone's original idea - but rather somebody's weeks/months of hard work being exploited in a few hours and tossed onto ebay to turn a quick buck (if I'm way off here, please tell me).

It seems the most you can do is what's already being done - spread awareness of the issue and expose recasters for what they are wherever possible. Anyone who's into this hobby for the love of movies and props will likely do the right thing and want to deal with the person who made the original.

Spot on anyone producing unofficial replicas of any kind without the copyright owners permission has no legal right to do so.
The copyright owner though is happily in a position that he/she can take legal action if he/she wishes to and most people would respect that wish.
The hobbyist/garage propmaker has no such luxury the only recourse is to inform others that an item he/she has produced has been copied without permission and hope that the majority of people will choose not to do business with the recaster.

That's really the way i see it .I've been in the freelance art world for 20 plus years and Most people see that as tributes to some degree by copying someone work. Warhol made his life from it.
There's really no Legal way to stop people. There's people making tons of money on ebay selling vacuum formed stormtrooper costumes...did they ask Lucas if it was OK.. i doubt it.
I don't buy anything much like that because I always feel I can do it myself better and cheaper .
