Real Dreads And A Different Look

you guys work fast!  Great paintups and wow bonus gifts!  Looking forward to seeing more progress on this build as well as Walters future posts.

Glad you boys had fulfilling day.

Also a thanks to Morgan, (the gal in the background) who has been assisting in the studio while I have been out. She has been making dreads for me. Gave her a new sculpting project last night and she did fantastic.

Cool paint up.  Kind of has a "Creature From The Black Lagoon" feel going on.  How well does the paint stick to the dreads?  I painted a few and it flaked off when bent.  Did you use Pros-Aide on them as well?

Brian

Here is a little update--and some bonus photos--I discovered I had panorama on my phone!!!

George-- I may do a little more-- we will see how it looks after I get the dreads and mandibles installed.

I like it ..however im going to be honest with you ..its a little too "airbrushy" for me ..has the feel of graphics that are airbrushed on a car or what not. I hope im not offending you or your friend ..more on the constructive end of things. Its lacking that "real" flesh feel ..and im noticing a lot of metallic in the paint ( i could be wrong ..and its just the lighting) ..and then the dreads ..what i think i always liked about the dreads traditionally, was the contrast in color to the skin tones of the flesh ..unfortunately here we have a mish-mash of the same color scheme. It sort of just blends in ..and i feel really takes away from the beautiful and original sculpt of your dread. Again ...this is but my opinion..and in no way aimed to be critical in a negative way. just offering some constructive advice. I would love to see more layers and depth in the skin ..i know you are planning on going silicone with the body ..that is where the depth in the head paint job will pay off ..really matching what you can accomplish in the body paint when you get to it

George,
Thanks so much. There was something that I couldnt put my finger on as well, and I think you nailed it. This was my buddy's first attempt at a mask, so I give him a bit of leeway for that. I will send him your comments and see what he says as well. That is why I stopped with the dreads also-- I wasnt liking the way they looked either-- I kind of got the same feeling that it was all blending together.  I wanted to get more depth as well to the head-- seemed too  one dimensional to me--  as you put it-- too "airbrushy" .
This really isnt going to be my main mask anyway-- I think I am going to go a bit more traditional, but with my own twists for my costume. I have a nice goliath mask that I  probably will use.
But giving credit to my friend-- He didnt do bad for his first shot.  Thanks again for the comments. Glad you felt comfortable enough to speak up.

Thanks Clay ..i knew you'd understand what i meant. And yes ..your friend has skills ..its a whole different deal painting a mask, especially when the sky is the limit regarding texture, design, etc. The colors were too bold initially ..like each was a single pass ..the highlights and lowlights where extremely deliberate, where in nature there needs to be variance . The style works well in graphic design ..graffiti images.. pop art., etc. It falls a bit short when entering the realm of realism.
Again he did a good job for a first run at a mask.

on skin its about building subtle layers to achieve those interesting pattens that  nature yields.

heres an example ..this was an early pass on a severed Vampire head i did for fun last month ..this was about 90% done ( eventually hair will get punched)

i slowly built up layers and then went for some blacks and purples to get the necrosis down ..still needs a rice paper wash ..this was tin silicone with homemade silicone paint. Excuse the shininess i think i just gave it a naphtha wash :)

Ha ..I should add ..i hate painting skin ..it scares the **** out of me ..im so much more comfortable painting metallic. And I have so many talented painters at the shop  ..but now and again its fun to test yourself a bit

Walt just joined up  his name is airbrushimage  connect with him, introduce yourself and give him some pointers--he is Hungry to learn. I gave him the Jamie Groove  silicone painting DVD from Stan Winston-- he is all excited now!!!

Thanks again for thehelp and the paint job is stunning-- love the depth. You are right-- subtle and layering!!!!

ha ..well thanks ..im more of an amateur when painting flesh ..i just get work with so many talented guys ..BUT ..i do have to oversee all their work .. so i guess that makes me a paid critic at times.  And Im happy to help. its honestly how i learned ..this place was really my school when it came to the early days of my art. ..My film school didnt have a makeup program back when i attended ..all the guys here were my teachers ..honestly ..they still are

Here is an experiment I am doing-- I had these kanekalon dreads made up-- they are a bit frizzy but I am thinking about sealing them with dragon skin so they still have the flex and move.

I actually kind of like the look-- I dont have a full set on here yet, just a few missing-- need to add more underneath -- they move really good.

So thoughts??

Talked with George a bit about some of the sculpting and fabrication techniques. He gave me some pretty good insight into some things, saved me some material money and heartache  as well. Thats what I love about this place-- everyone is ready willing and able to jump in and help!!!!

Thanks again George!!!
