Rancor Sculpt Video

Hey guys, I'm thinking about doing a large (not full size) rancor head and neck sculpt this summer. I was planning on building the base from styrofoam or other crap and adding clay. Then I found this:

The quality sucks so much I can barely tell what his medium is. It looks to me like a huge block of foam. It isn't beaded styrofoam for sure, that would never work or hold detail. Anyone familiar with what he is using? It will definitely save me money on more clay!

That is a plain foam rubber block from that I can tell. In the beginning it looks like crap but in the end...AWESOME!

But I don't know any company who makes such huge foam blocks...can't be cheap!

So huge it can bite your head off :lol

Can't be styro, he'd have those beads all over him. I know, I've sculpted things that large, You feel like you're in a snowglobe.

That is what I though, but I would have no idea where to get a block like that. The company I work for uses casting foams daily, but if you cut it the "cells" are exposed.

Haha, I knew it couldn't be straight styrofoam. I emailed him, but I got no response sooooo I have no idea where to go from here. I have quite a while until I would even gather materials to start it, but It would be nice to know how much it will cost me.

Hm...there are different type of foams with various cell structures. Perhaps a high density foam?

I don't know but could be possible that he glued some foam blocks together in order to get such a big cube?

There is also a chance that this is styrofoam because they are also avaiable in higher densitys. They are harder to cut and the don't make a mess with this little white snowballs...

But I don't think that this is ANY kind of styrene otherwise he must have used solvent free paint. Ever poured some gasoline on a sheet of styrofoam? It has the same effect like alien acid blood on metal, so this only can be foam rubber I imagine.

There are actually products specifically designed to coat styrene foam for painting. If you used water based paints it would be ok right? Man, I wish this guy would email me back!

Looks like good ole' pink insulation foam . . .that stuff is great for scuplting, as long as your careful!

That is very cool!

On a side note, some of the RPF old timers may recognize the name of the last comment poster on that link....ahhhh memories!

That is the only thing I can think of, but the color makes me think it is something different....do you think he just built up that block from foam insulation sheets?

more I look at it it looks like foam for coaches/pillows like you said upholstery foam that you can get at jo anns fabricks when he flips it on its back you can see it then thats what my guess would be plus looks like hes cutting it with a blade and using his fingers to just pull pieces off just my thoughts I agree with russel it isnt white foam or he would look like he has been through a blizzard:thumbsup

I don't think making it out of cushion foam would be practical for my application....I think an eps foam. Like the stuff people use for theater sets.

My buddy and fellow 501st member helped him with that. We use that Rancor all the time at events for the Great Lakes Garrison here in Michigan, I have helped set it up and tear it down. It is made of cushion foam glued together and then slowly sculpted. It will be at the Motor City Comic Con this May in Novi Michigan.
