Naboo N1 Barn Find | Revell 1:24 Conversion

Something that I've used for years (literally!) It is smooth, strong, and relatively inexpensive compared to other options. I've been using a 3-lb kit for the last 10 years, so it goes a long ways:
Used to be 'Coombs' brand, but still the same 'All-Game' product. Pretty forgiving for mixing, I just scoop out roughly equal portions of the two parts (roll into balls to compare the size; if you weighed it, you'd be using a much more accurate method) and the knead it together. Granted, in ten years, the parts are getting quite stiff, but still workable and easy to use once mixed... longevity makes the initial expense more palatable!
Tip: make sure and let it cure completely before using files on it- about 24 hours - so it doesn't gum up the teeth (no pun intended.) Initial shaping and smoothing can be done with a little water, and wear latex gloves when handling, it adheres to fingerprints very well.

Cheers! Robert

Ah, so it works similarly to Apoxie Sculpt and Magic Sculpt, but seems to have a softer composition if it can achieve seamless transitions to the part and the filler. Whenever I apply Apoxie Sculpt, it's hard to shape, and the edges start to crumble when it is sanded too thin, so cannot achieve a smooth surface.

Thanks man.

How did you do the tarps. Just cloth and then making them solid?

I like all the additions and alterations you made. Really makes it look like an abandoned project.

Another note on 'All-Game': it does feather edges quite well. Though, admittedly, I tend to rely on 3M Acryl-White glazing putty when I need feather blends on styrene, it bonds to plastic super tight, even polypropylene if it is 'scuffed' first to give a good mechanical bonding tooth.
Cheers!
Robert

WOW that turned out great. All the little additions really make it pop. Just... poor R2 unit being stuck in that thing and just abandoned.

You say you used epoxy clay to fill the gap. Can I ask what brand as I'm looking for something that sands smooth and seamless where it meets the surface of the model?
I have used Tamiya Epoxy Putty Quick Type (the green one) for this. I ran across it in my local hobby store some time ago and thought I may need it later. It was a first try on this.

It worked perfectly for me. I have tried some other methods in the past but this was by far the best. Gets rocksolid after 6-9 hours, you can chisel away on it in the beginning and sand it perfectly smooth later.

I am aware Tamiya probably sells this for a premium compared to similar products, but man, I have never bought a product from them that was not amazing and great to work with.

Well, Tamiya usually makes premium products - not skimping on quality, if I remember correctly - so completely understanding that it costs a little more. They may have it at my local hobby shop. Thanks again.

I’m glad to find you here, following you on IG. This is a beautiful build! Love to see the N-1 in other colours, different from the stock yellow. The big Revell N-1 has been on my to-do list for a while now with some tweaks in mind. The bottom engine removal is one of them, never liked that either. Gonna buy some Tamiya products now seeing your results.

Thanks man! Glad to hear you like it.
I am thinking about making this a small series of different "racing themed" N1's, so stay tuned!

Didn't mean to advertise for Tamiya, I am sure there are a lot of great quality alternatives out there, as well.

That is a great idea, I like it. The racing theme goes well with the slick contours of the N-1. I think the N-1 is one of the great ones in how it stepped away from the desings of the original trilogy yet fitting in the SW universe so well. Very cool indeed!

I made one in white a couple of years ago (the link is to my IG post) from the small 1:48 AMT model. I'll make another version of the whitey with this big Revell kit. I only wish Revell also made a 1:24 scale stock version of the N-1 now that they have the license. I'd buy a few of those instantly.

Looking forward to seeing the racers. Cheers!

I was looking at this thread again and just noticed the poor astromech too.

Agree 100%
There is so much creative potential in this design and a stock one would be great. But it’s also a pretty interesting challenge to turn this modified N1 kit back to a stock one.
We will see

I'm a fan of a lot of the prequel designs even though the original trilogy stuff is super popular. I'd love for Bandai to make the Radiant VII republic cruiser , so what u can do

The lonely astromech has touched a soft spot with quite a few people now.

I am a big fan of that ship, as well! If I ever start a new long-term scratch building project, it will be something like the Radiant.
But a kit would sure be nice!
