R2D2 Build

well, I've got the gears on.. I think my problem now is tension spring placement. the pitman moves on it's own even with the tension spring attached..bout ready to give up for today

R2 full head turn. - YouTube

three hours to get this far, but it FINALLY turns on it's own, sitting on the droid properly. Only thing is, it's STILL making noise. I think the tension spring is the problem. Before, the screws where dragging along the bottom of the rockler causing it to stall..

With the last remaining outside parts ordered, only ankles remain to finish up R2, and a year long project started last January will be nearing a close.

it's about 85% finished at this point..

Sabertooth Controller ordered.. I'll be asking for the NPC motors for christmas gifts...so he won't be rolling until at least New Years Eve..and that's if Ankles go on sale before then.

tomorrow, I plan on trying to finalize the paint on the arm parts, glue those in place. Get the remaining screws on the booster attached, and glue in the leg struts so the bottom part doesn't keep falling off.

other things on the agenda, finish up the replacement power coupler tabs, since the originals got mis placed. Create the foot strips for the knurl fittings to get attached too, and minus ankles, the outside should be done.
the last two parts should get here this week if they shipped last(knurled fittings and under shoulder details)

Eventually I might order a metal booster and horse shoe, along with a metal battery box. The Resin one looks fine and all, but there is just something cool about an all metal droid.

As for the next project? The plan is to let the wallet to recover for 6 months, and THEN perhaps start on a C-3PO....

Most appreciative of the support! Lots of negativity in my life as of late (between shore stuff, living with a divorced mother who I think is going through a mid life crisis and other things I won't get into)...a little positivity goes a long way! :O) got lots on my mind, so this is one of those 'I earned it and try to focus' projects :)..

later!

today i hot glued the leg struts together...no need for them to keep falling apart now. The Booster Cover is fixed and stable. all holes for the buttons and hydraulics drilled so the screws can be sunken in from the back. just need to get the proper length screws so they sit flat against the horse shoe. the things still need sanding and given one final paint...but we all know my bad skill with that.

I am hopefull the under shoulder details andknurlled fittings will arrive by thursday. Friday, I hope to have the feet and upper leg finished. Then it will only be a matter of buying ankles and applying ankle detail.

The sabertooth shipped as well. in the home stretch now.

the upper leg is all complete now. shoulder details on. new metal hydraulics in ( i don't have to paint these).

still looking for BC compliant metal horse shoe. this one is too short for the leg. might get metal booster, but i like the way this one looks for now.
tomorrow will finish up the feet

in other news, one laughable thing in this whole shore mess.. think my uncles bike is salvageable? :) only hada house land on it

That Sandy storm sucked. That bicycle looked mashed up. Good luck with your R2D2 build. I have enjoyed seeing it come together.

hoping to get in tommorow to finish up the feet. damn house construction is driving me bored.

only thing left to do is knurlled fittings and hose install on the feet. then i just need ankles....the droid will also be almost all metal, minus a few minor resin parts

knurlled fittings next... then done minus ankles/ankle parts. needed to get the set screw for the fittings to twist on to...monday the feet will be done.

very badly done foot mark up. for some reason the battery harnesses stayed straighter with the same exact setup on the other box. here they lean. but they are both tapped at the bottom with very tiny sets. same for the fittings, only obviously much larger ones. The other three fit in more stable, because i didn't cut it out so short. i'll have to silicone one in on the top right for it to fit tight..

not sure if i should do this for foot two just yet..but theoretically it could work

edit - thanks to a member, i found out i forgot about two parts for the battery harness. I was all set to glue them in at the top because I had mixed these two other parts in with the leg pieces and thought I had some extra's left over!

simple fix done tomorrow!

with extra battery harness parts found and assembled, gotta figure out how to attach it since the twist on trick won't work.

then i need to find a hole saw the size of the fittings to finish off the other foot. hpme stretch now. my foot drives shipped, could have the motors installed and running by new years... now, just need ankles and he'll be nearing completion after a year!

mock up of second foot. I drilled the hole one size bigger, now it's time to find a right sized nut. The Top of the Knurled fitting just barely fits through the hole...and that was the smallest sized hole saw i could find.

Other things to think about: The cables between the two fittings needs to be shortened a bit. they are too long now. I need to sand that top hole a bit . and i need to figure out how to attach the harness permanent. afterthat, a foot strip will be cut and attached, and feet will be done, minus ankles.

that's one, one badly made foot strip.. ah hah ah..

the feet are nearing completion... came into a decent christmas bonus.. ordered two new metal outer half moons. once these come in, and my foot strips are finished in an hour, the feet will effectively be done.

All i need to order now are ankles. my foot motors are gifted and ready for christmas. My foot motor controller is sitting here ready to go.
and i still need speakers and something for sound.

also still need a replacement metal horse shoe and battery box.

but for the most part, he is 90% done from a hectic journey started in january..

Hey Neil,

Stick a piece of silicon hose or some sort of hose down the braided hose. It will keep it in shape and will stop it kinking and will support it in place. etc. :thumbsup

come next week, R2's feet at least can roam around. maybe i can tie 'em together and just shoot a video of the two feet going around the floor like a few mouse droids..

Note to bobc, thanks for the fast shipping! Note to self, don't paint parts while attached. now i have to sand off the bottom foot. that second front foot strip didn't come out as good as the first, and it got bent as i was drilling it. tried to flatten it back out with the press/holder but didn't quite work. oh well.. try two wensday

now he just needs ankles!
