R2D2 Build

Niel,
I know you keep saying you've tried but it really isn't that hard. If you hold the can about 12" away from what you are spraying and apply pressure to the nozzle before you get to the piece you are spraying and spray accross the object in a smooth right direction movement then release the pressure and do the same to the left. Give it a light spray..... STOP wait 15 mins then do it again and repeat until covered. It's all about patience and going slow.
If you do this your paint won't bleed into the tape as it won't be wet enough to do so. Also when you are masking parts and cutting the tape to shape on your piece make sure you use a brand new sharp scalpel.
If it's not working the way you are doing it now just try this method. You might be pleasantly surprised.

GOOD LUCK! :thumbsup
Practice makes perfect.

I my experience you won't get a closed glossy coat by that, it turns out to get more grainy (i call it "hairy") and matt.

So i try first a light coat from a distance which is meant to get grainy, let dry 15 min to get a gritt where the following closed sprayed coat can stick on an don't run to easy to show fisheyes.

when i do more than coat, i always let it go for 30 minutes and sand it down a bit...I guess just sitting down at a computer so much has lost all my precise hand control and i can't control the spray well enough to get an even coat :).

The paint hasn't had time to fully cure in the 30 minutes... you shouldn't be sanding it at all. When I paint, I give it a first light coat, come back in 5 mintues and give it a little heavier so it looks wet under lights. go much more than wet and it starts to run.

Also looked at where your horseshoes were mounted... seems like they are mounted too low. The top of the horseshoe should be even with the top of the leg.

Another thing to try is to not hold the nozzle down the whole time. If you start from one end and try to go across you might put it on too heavy. Try going from one side to the halfway point. then do the same from the other end. You need to find the right speed so the paint doesn't pool up.

You should buy the cheapest paint you can find, get some cardboard and practice until the can is empty. Another thing is to get one of these High Performance Comfort Spray Grip Accessory-241526 at The Home Depot. Makes things a whole lot easier.

Like everyone's saying, it's all about practice.

I think the horse shoes are not council approved. They are supposed to reach from the very top of the leg to the very bottom edge of the leg with no gaps in between, yes? WEll, mine are about an inch short if you put them at the very top and don't reach the bottom, so I tried for a comprimise...will be upgrading to metal horse shoes when they become available.

after a bit of a false start, I had accidentally connected the motor wires to the battery, and mis understood how the receiver got connected...from what i saw looking at pictures, i thought i was on the right track...obviously not. at least the right side is fixed.

found a blog for the feet...halfway assembled I'd guess.. battery box attachment on monday. left outer moon might be a bit crooked.. battery box install on monday.

ordered last three part for feet.....braided hose, under hang part, and knurled fittings. making my own foot strip. next comes NPC foot motors. foot motor controller, and ankles. Once I get him moving, he will be done!

he is not g oing to have any more bells and whistles than basic movement and sound.

finaly got to the shore house last week. my mothers on 5th ave was in tact, but entire first floor ruined. everything thrown away with a foot of water, appliances ruined.

my fathers near the ocean was more worse off...4 feet of water in the house.everything ruined on the first floor. neighbors house crashed into the side and landed on our porch. it was just bought last year, stripped to the frame, and redone from scratch. everything new. now he has to start all over again on the first floor. he just finished in april and got no more than 6 months out of it before sandy came.

sorry if i've been testy or not coming around as much, but the worry and aftermath of seeing what happened has been stressful :)...but thankful ours are still standing

hoping to get the dome spinning properly today. only thing left is to re-drill the motor so it's placed in a hopefully more sturdy position to give it better movement. only question is where to place it.

Well, you've kicked me into gear starting my own droid!

Where did you get your hose fittings? Knurled parts?
I'm looking for pocket vents and coin returns amongst other parts.

I think I've jumped in as all the runs finished :facepalm!

I got lucky and jumped in when they all started. that rarely happens :). the dome run is still going though.

you can find resin pocket vents and coin returns here. be warned, my pocket vents didn't exactly fit the curve of the frame, so you might be better off with spec acpproved metal ones :).

WORR Parts : Astromech Parts

Sorry to see that NeilT. I saw a few pics of your dads house online. I heard that there is to be high insurance premiums to come running a lot if people out that used to live on the coastline

and that's the sad part. those houses where perfectly fine for 40 years, and this one storm coming along gets everyone greedy and making the situation worse. What's even more annoying about insurance companies is if you use them once for something like this, they raise your rate and drop you.. good luck trying to find someone else then..

not to derail the thread but just had to get that out. Soon they will also release the new height your house is supposed to be at in order to get flood insurance. i guess the state will pay to have your house raised as well :behave
