finished home made foot strips. Not bad for a home made part.

All he needs now is ankles. And awaiting metal battery boxes/horse shoes to go on sale.

For sounds; you can just do what we did on the original R2's that were used for personal
appearances, which was to have a CD player with the sound effects running on a loop, and
a remote controlled servo switch to turn the speakers on and off. You don't have control of
"what" R2 says, only WHEN he says something.
Fortunately, the Make-a-Wish kids were just thrilled that he was talking to THEM. The audience will make sense of his replies for you, whether the replies make sense or not.

yeah, someone else mentioned an mp3 player hooked up to speakers. How does the servo get hooked up to the speakers?

trying to get back to basics..
separated the frames totally.. the paint is all but gone on the front frames..at least the layers..all that is left is stuff that has to be scratched off. Next, Trying to clean off the JB Weld on the back frames, it'll be re-attached with silicone.

Ankles are painted... Second foot strip is installed. So feet are done minus metal battery boxes. Parts to attach ankles have arrived. If I Get to the office tomorrow, i will try and install them.

Things to do: Get last remaining paint off front frames, ship to powder coater. if it turns out good, scrape off paint on back frames for the same.

With a new Metal Horse Shoe Scored and awaiting shipment, New Metal Ankle Details and Under Arm Details also awaiting shipment to me, the legs will be 100% complete by March, with any luck. All he really needs is the center ankle and he'll be ready for his first test drive.

This time last year, I barely had started on taking apart the head, and working on the lights! What a difference a year makes!

VERY Rough ankle setup.. yes, i know it's on backwards... :). but, having a bit of difficulty getting it setup so that it is sturdy. this was just a mock up for the picture.

i've also got to re-align that booster so it's lines are flush with the leg.
Also, tommorow or Wensday, they frames get sent back to the powder coater. as you can see, the old paint is finaly almost all gone :)

Ankles are FINALLY on..had enough spare time to get it done.
a quick paint to end the day, and tommorow, R2 should be standing on his own power, finally.

All he needs is a center ankle to be done and go on his first test drive :).

Also, scored a metal horse shoe set. When that, my ankle detail, and under shoulder details ship, the only resin parts on him will be a booster cover and shoulder buttons. Total Cost of R2 now is nearing $8500..

this time last year, i was just getting around to working on the lights!

His legs are on :)...He's a little lops sided though.. I think because one leg was put in a bit crooked, because I only secured it with one screw by the ankle rather than the four.. and the other was installed on a second teir screw/hole. Fixable. But at least he can stand under his own power now :). I'll leave it like this tonight. and de-semble it in the morning..

ankle cylinders painted

feet legs put back together..will eventually upgrade horse shoe, booster cover and shoulder buttons for an all metal droid..

back frame getting de coated to be shipped off to peerless powder coaters..

I still need to attach the cylinders, but need to see what type of screw they take. i'm making the rest of the foot strips, and replacements for the ones i painted white. hopefully tomorrow. Other than that, can't do much more.

Metal Ankle detail, under shoulder details and horse shoe need to ship..probably in three weeks. Will need to get metal booster and shoulder buttons. Metal BAttery box.

Then it's just a matter of setting the electronics, getting speakers, and binding the feet motors to the RC. then test drive time

382370_10151478912345211_1826373788_n.jpg

that took longer than i hoped it would..Cylinder took a good hour to carefully twist those tiny screws in an even tinier space and get it all real tight. next one coming up...Leg strut also screwed in.. all 8-32 screws, which makes it nice and even..

hope my ankle details come in, and my horse shoes in three weeks, and i can finish up the legs good, minus the battery box...also my metal under arm details, so i can screw them in the right way

R2 motors. - YouTube

FINALLY got the foot motors figured out. at least i know they can both be controlled via the remote now. Just have to figure out why my 12V battery is smoking...it worked perfectly for the last two months.. but now all of a sudden, any time i connect something it starts burning the wire. The only thing different is i soldered wires to the pitman.

After the mini fire, I cut the soldered parts and re-stripped.. still no go.

now i'm afraid to hook anything up to it

YouTube

well, on the off chance that I had it all working, I decided to risk it. I plugged it back in, bracing for an explosion...no fire! I got that same tiny ignite spark that i always used to get and everything turned on fine just like it did before..I'm happy, but I just don't get it :). now i have to figure out how to get the wheel motors to turn on and not instantly spin..

finished foot drive.. yay!

for now finished legs...things will get finalized with new metal parts. will cover metal holes

nothing left to do now, but wait!

i took a plunge on a resin ankle...if it doesn't work out, i can always resell it or upgrade it later. but if it does, r2s final part has been ordered.

I'd LIKE to have him fully completed by the end of the month and ready for his first appearance in May.

i took a plunge on a resin center ankle. i could always upgrade to metal later and use it for a possible styrene droid in the future..or just keep it if it works out great. and all indications seem to point to that it will.. This is the last part for R2 needed.

I hope to have him finished and for his first test drive in at least three weeks time.

PYLE PLG69.3 Car Speaker - Newegg.com i decided on these speakers from the slide show posted earlier, only they have them in 3.6" mode only. i hope that is ok. Spark Fun MP3 trigger is ordered. reading up on a suggested thread to figure out which arduino i need.

updated list for R2 will now be final. Total cost comes in pretty close to $9,000.

proper length foot strips now. but my 45 degree angle person is ski-ing right now on vacation, so they won't get finished till next week.

Battery Boxes secured. Final parts for R2 D2 bought. now it's only a simple matter of waiting for them to all be delivered. then final assembly can begin.. hoping to hear from frame people this week that frames are ready. it's all coming together after almost a year and a half. Never thought I'd get this far joining in 2011...one bonus check in 2011 started it all.

I'm really scared on trying to cut the top of the motors .....would a saber saw do the trick?

Total cost of R2 now an almost even $9,000. all metal minus three resin parts.

Also, who here has attempted a C3P0? Where do you get parts? How much does he cost all metal?

Wow you're putting so much effort and so much money into it! Looks awesome! You rock :D

appreciated :)....I soak in positive support, so rare I get it at home )....
Also love a scotlander...grandfather was from port glasgow )...one of my places on lists to visit before I die :).

New Foot strips are done. Not the best in the world, but they work for now.
Legs are all but done. new battery boxes should get here next week to finish them up.

Crunch time now. Both frames should be back next week. hopefully looking good. if i can get in tomorrow, i will try and shave off the npc motor tops. and r2s center anlke ships tomorrow. he should be ready for his first test drive next week. scariest step yet to get right! i also threw on my resin ankle details with a bad paint job as a temp while i await my metal ones. those are not staying

it should all come to a close next week..

my center ankle will arrive. my battery boxes will arrive.
I want him to be able to go on his first test drive by Friday.

Also picked up some sheet metal for his side plates. The Frames should all be back pro painted this week. If i can get that center ankle in by wensday, it'll just be a matter of final assembly.
