R2D2 Build

Both Horse shoes are now on. The screws are small enough that you woudn't see them unless you where looking right at them, so it's not a big deal. Once the paint gets worked out, I will silicone the silver parts on.

Now it's just a matter of figuring out how to attach the booster and leg strut and most of the upper leg will be done.

I don't knowif you can tell by this shot, but I went back and tried to dremel out all the extra jb weld from in between the panels.. i think some of them look better now and don't have to be removed.

I also placed temporary tabs by the power couplers. I Had to make my own since the ones that came with it seem to have been thrown out.

Also ordered some testors paint. Will paint the rest of the PC, fix up the coin slots, and do touch ups elsewhere on the booster covers...

Not much to do on r2 now.

Testors paint came in, so Coin slots and power coupler blue parts are done.

Hope Someone sells ankles soon. My feet should be shipping soon.... Once those get on, it's only a matter of buying the few minor details left on those parts and R2 will be complete on the outside..

I hope to have the Dome RC parts installed first week of november if my birthday gifts come through. Maybe by December if the legs are finished, I'll be able to get him moving under his own power with Feet RC. And then he'll be done.

I wonder if 3P0 is this expensive or expansive in construction :).
could be a project for next year!

New vents are in....made a note not to paint the bottom rung this time ....Spent some time trying to finalize the booster paint, dremeling away dead edge parts for a smooth look, trying to fix the paint on the front skins, and re-seating a front panel to try and make it look a little better...

there's a reason why i have more fun posting over here lately... :).

appreciate all the compliments so far :)

until ankles go on sale and my outer feet arrive, the last remaining parts..hopefully i can start rcing the dome next week if birthday gifts come through

Tommorow, I'm going to try and paint the booster parts Silver that need to be painted silver. Fix the coin slot paint area... re seat at least one more panel on the front to make it look a little smoother....

fix paint on shoulder buttons and hydraulics. ..glue those on. try one last time to clean up the body as best as possible, and then maybe on wesnday if we go in, will try and start assembling and painting the feet parts that i have available..

My steel outer feet should ship soon as well.... and if birthday gifts come through, maybe get the dome rc'ed next

survived the storm... shore houses seem mostly intact despite a car and another whole house drifting into them...we'll see once we get down there. My mother got ours and after the divorce my father went and bought a second one. ours seems to be only flood damage most likely at the moment. Power went out at 12PM as i was checking remotely..so hopefully the upstairs pc survived, but i think the xobox and wii are lost causes downstairs, heh. ahh well..

R2 status : The sabertooth to control the rotation of his head came in. if my other birthday gift of a remote control comes through, the top portion of his dome should be controlable at least. some positive news!

awaiting my feet....they should have been here by now, but the hurricane obviously fouled things up. as if i don't have enough to worry about with the shore house possibly having sewage water in it and sink holes all around it :).

and seems as if my other birthday gift never got ordered, so until the spektrum gets shipped, no dome turning for r2 yet.

The last major missing part is ankles, and my wallet can start to recover....although i have no idea how to hook up that or the drive system yet..

But for the most part, I'd say it's 75% done from starting in January.

anyone ever hook up R2's feet with motors so i know what i'm getting in too? Also curious about how difficult the controller is to learn

well, it took an hour of careful prodding so as to not damage the frames, but i finally got these bastards loose. the frame is being repainted now. I'll have to reseat one coin slot and three panels, but it'll be worth it. I'm just going to silicone those slots in, screw the screws.

hopefully by tomorrow it'll be back in shape to the way it was.
also going to dremel away excess jb weld in the hopes of improving the look of the panels..

I little word of advise, stop going so heavy with the paint. Spray a light misty coat and let dry. Mutiple light coats. It looks like you are trying to cover it in one shot. Also by applying light coats the first few will dry and seal the tape. If you spray too much at once the paint will go under the tape and lift it. Light coats will give you a smoother surface. Not shiny but smoother. It also will help to prevent the fisheyeing you are getting. Otherwise good work!
