R2D2 Build - 2/3 the size

Hey guys, its been very slow on my other projects due to work, and Christmas. Apparently both my wife and my boss think there are other priorities than my spaceship basement :confused So at any rate, I thought I would post an older, but continuously on going project.

My father and I set out a couple years ago to build 3 droids for my poker room. (So far we don't yet have a completed unit, but isn't that how this hobby goes?) They are being built roughly 1/2 scale of the original, so that they would be smaller, but more importantly the correct height for my poker table. The plan is to put trays on them, similar to the ROTJ R2, when he is serving drinks on the sail barge.

At any rate, the project has taken WAY longer to get done than either of us thought, but with my basement project underway, and the poker table nearly finished, the droids have become a priority once again, and things are getting going.

*Just as a side note, my father hand carved all the parts for the foot pads, arms, etc out of wood! The man is insane!

Re: R2D2 Build - Lots of Pics

Looking awesome !

What have you used for the body ? It looks like a big pvc pipe.

Re: R2D2 Build - Lots of Pics

WOW guys, thanks so much. It has been one of those up and down projects; it gets worked on hard for two or three weeks, then sits for two months . . . and so on. my poor dad gets requests from me that are a very tall order, and the man is a perfectionist!

Here is a list of parts so far:

- The body is a PVC sewer pipe, 12" diameter (The second body will be made out of Styrene instead. You can't imagine how much of a pain the sewer pipe was to route out with the router, and then the clean up . . . ugh, tough stuff.

- The Dome is a restaurant cake lid, bought from a restaurant supply store for about $12

- The eye pieces on the dome are composed of Windex bottle caps, and a plumbing fitting.

- and all the legs, the small bolts, and other odds and ends are carved from wood with a turning lathe and other various tools.

The dome has been painted, and the electronics installed for it, I don't have photos with me, but I will post some tonight.

Thanks again for looking, and thanks for the compliments!!!

Re: R2D2 Build - Lots of Pics

So I took some shots of the Dome painted up, and a few other minor parts. I don't see getting a chance to work on this much until probably the first week of February, but I will be sure to update as often as I can. Hope you like!
