Question about Obi ANH Pommel

Quick, probably dumb, question about the sink knob Obi ANH pommel. So the knobs had the letter h or C on the bottom, and the new ones have the A logo, did the original have this also or was it ground off or covered somehow? If the original did have it, which did it have?

It's actually not an 'A', it's an 'A' with an 'S' in it, for Armitage Shanks (in America it's American Standard).

Oh. Back in 1975-76, the pommels would have had the 'C' or 'H' on them as they were the vintage 3 piece design. When the knob was redone as a two piece design, the logo was added and the hot or cold was determined by the red or blue color ring on the top.

I don't believe anyone has ever found an older Obi-design knob with the 'AS' logo nor a modern plastic one with the 'H' or 'C'.

As for the movies, as of now I don't believe anyone knows for sure, most people like the 'C' because of the blue color ring.

I wonder if there could have been a "generic" version of the original four-piece handwheel without any letter.

well ive noticed on replicated ones everyone just makes the bottom smooth, but we dont really know if the original had the lettering or not?

A little while back there was a debate as to whether or not the cap was even still there when the film was made. See LINK.

But since it's really not known, at this point, which letter "h" or "c" was used, I would think it would be difficult for a replicator to justify the expense it would take to machine or mold the lettering. So I'm sure that's why the replica caps have all been made smooth.

hey id be happy if i could even find one of the newer ones, or a copy someone has made.

There was a modern AS handwheel for sale in the JY recently. I bet a WTB would get you one quick 'n easy.

I've got Hez/SD Studios chromed aluminum copy of one if you can't track down a real one.

oh ive already got one on the way, but i just wanted to find out more about it and whats accurate :)

The originals; most accurate...I believe this pic belongs to Howard

The modern day equivalent...pic from another site

so is the only difference the logo? The top edge seems maybe a bit more rounded on the corner in the originals than the new, but might be seeing that wrong. Anyone know of any hardware piece thats good for replacing the bottom cap to make it be smooth? I just cant imagine the original prop would have had the lettering on it...but who knows they also left Graflex uncovered..

Here's an accurate ancient one (right) with the stylised 'AS' on top next to a modern one (left) with the same symbol on top. Note the size difference and the slightly tapered cubes on the modern one.

hmm, so is it better to get a machined one made to be like an old one or an "authentic" modern one?

Roman's is the most accurate fan-made piece available,

although he's sold out at the moment.

Having a replica machined to the specs of an original is costly (and you'd need an original to take measurements from) and it would need to be chromed.
The modern originals are slightly too large and miss-shapen, as pointed out by Sidewinder, but they do have a great chromed look to them. Then again, you cannot reverse the centre cube section as per the original for the intricate angles of the Chronicles look.
The best I've seen so far is a stainless steel replica produced a while ago by a past member.
Thanks for the credits to my pics, lessternessman. ;)

Howard. :)

hmm, i didnt realize there was an old and new one with the AS logo that were slightly different, that makes it even harder to tell which is which...

I thought the originals had the H on it, I didn't know there were so many versions. Learn something new everyday

The version posted by Sidewinder on the right is a transitional version, it is NOT accurate to the original on the prop. There was an interesting thread on variants, including that one, back in July of '05.
