Question about X-wing pilot boot alternatives

Hey all. Pretty new to this and could use some pointers or validation. I've researched a ton about this topic, but it's almost a case of there being too much information, and most of it suggesting options outside our budget.

My wife and I are making X-wing pilot costumes for my friend and me for a con in December, though we'd like to be able to keep using them after that and improve on them over time. For now we're on a pretty tight budget thanks to travel and con expenses, and we've already got pretty much all the materials plus the RedKap fight suits we're modifying, and we're making our own flak vests (which is pretty hard). Have some ideas for the gloves. But the potential biggest out-of-pocket expense is the boots.

For our current purposes we're not looking for RL approval or anything, and we don't need 100% screen accuracy, but we do want things to generally look right. Or at least not look silly. In the future we might want to modify things and get higher-end accessories as we work towards something like RL submission.

I know many on-screen costume boots - including the x-wing pilots - were the standard German-style jackboot, and I've seen links to some of those directly from Germany, but the price plus shipping to here in the US just isn't feasible. I've also seen recommendations from costume providers here in the states like Keep Trooping/Imperial Boots and Crowprops, but those run around $150-200. I'm really looking for any alternatives starting below $50 at the most - preferably a lot less.

I've also seen riding boots suggested, but I haven't seen any that seem consistent with the look of the pilot boots, or that aren't well outside our budget. (If anyone has direct pointers there, that would be great)

I'd love any suggestions but I was also curious for thoughts about using basic Walmart rubber rain boots like these:

Or these taller ones:

Home Depot also has some very similar ones:

These are all in the $20-25 range. They're also available locally, which would allow me to try them on. (I actually have foot issues and may need to replace the insoles for walking all day)

Again, I'm not looking for exact screen accuracy, but are boots like these in the ballpark of looking generally correct to most people, or would I get funny looks like "Why's that Rebel pilot wearing rainboots..?"

And from these pictures does this kind of finish look right? I don't know if they'd need to be more or less shiny to be more consistent with the ones on screen.

Thanks!

I cannot speak for every occurrence of x-wing pilots in all movies and TV series, but if you want to talk Luke and OT and even TIE pilots, they did not use jackboots although that used to be the thinking about 20 so years ago. They actually used a German engineering or sometimes referred to as tanker boot. The main distinctive detail is the flap and buckle at the top.

If you can wear a size 8 or 9… these are a good deal…

Sadly those would be too small, but that's good info. I guess a lot of the "jackboot" stuff I saw was outdated or possibly referring to other costumes. I did see them referred to as engineering boots though, or "knobelbechers."

I'll keep an eye out for used listings like the ones you linked, but otherwise they all seem way outside my current budget.

Thanks!

Yes.

I got mine about 15 to 20 years ago NEW on Sportsman Guide. I was lucky to catch the timing just right. At the time, the biggest issue was not that I couldn’t find the right boots, but all the sellers were in Europe/Germany. So the shipping cost made them expensive.

Yeah I've been finding a fair number of options on German and other European sites, and shipping just makes them pretty prohibitive. If only I'd known about this future need 30 years ago when I lived in Germany as a kid!

And as above, size is definitely a challenge too - I need a good, reasonably comfortable fit for walking around a con all day (I also use a cane), and I also have physical issues with my feet and need to be able to fit orthotic insoles in them. So that's another factor making me lean towards just having to spend more for one of the sites that takes multiple measurements for a custom fit.

I do live in a pretty heavily military area and have a number of surplus stores around that I think I might hit up, though I've heard this kind of thing can be harder to find at those in the US too.
