QMx & Other New Sonic Screwdrivers Thread

Hi TheNickFox.... where the hell do these names come from? :)

just so you know... there's still wires (leads) that go to the battery. The wire or leads are soldered to magnets. The magnets snap to the battery. I just want to make sure you understood me correctly. There still are wires in the prop.... one runs all the way up to the LED. There is some level of flex in the wire as it is extended and collapsed... however... on the 11th sonic the battery sits static for the most part. I hope that made sense. :) Again... I'll see if Andy will be OK with me doing a video or something on those lines to show how much detail and work goes into one of these.

Well, I and others in the industry use magnets. We solder the leads to magnets and the magnets snap to the positive and negative sides of the battery. Bang.... instant power connection.

Never thought of that, cool :lol.

Kenney,

It was previously mentioned last year (see page 1 of this thread) that the 10th Sonic may have Cellphone activation. Are you allowed to say if this is stillI the case, or are QMx aiming for a screen accurate sound option for both their 10 & 11th Sonics?

Kenney - thank you again. Your enthusiasm and love of what you do is pretty obvious in your posts. Best of luck and keep on going!

Agreed, Kenney's contribution to this thread has really made a difference in calming things down. Thank you! Looking forward to this more than ever!

Hi mooneye63,
I don't want to try and answer that just yet. The sonics that were presented last year were not built by Nick or I. These sonics are still in the early stages... meaning.... the master CAD files are done with respect to the 10th and 11th. Now, it's all programming and on to the CNC. I only reverse engineered the 10th and 11th while I was in the UK. I still have to take Nick's other sonics, that he did, and create CADs for those. Creating CADs for something like that can take me as little as a couple days to a week and a half for each one. Many many factors have to be worked out before going right into the CAD work with something like this. An example would be tolerances. I've seen people machine parts with a 1 to 1 fit tolerance. Well, in CAD... that works as far as fit. In the real world... that doesn't work and you end up spending hours hand fitting. So, all the parts have to fit correctly the first time... after they come out of the cnc.... especially when you're doing a run of several hundred. Anyway, There is work to be done and I'm currently on the 10th and 11th as we speak. QMx made it very clear that they wanted me to light the fire under my ass. lol So, hang in there guys. Plus, I still have a lot of things I want to work out with Nick.

I know my answers can be long but I don't like to give a simple yes or no. I know what you guys expect and want. So, I try to answer in a way to make you all understand what goes into something like this... what's all involved. Oh, and try and do it in a way that doesn't get me a phone call and an ass chewing. :) I think I'll let Andy get back home from Comic Con and settled in before I call him and hit him with a ton of stuff. I'll see if we can work on a way where I can keep you informed but not release anything he doesn't want released too early. I, like all of you, think communication to some degree will keep everyone informed so there's not too much anxiety. :) I mean, I truly believe it's you guys... the fan base... that matters. You're the ones that make companies like QMx successful or the film studios for that matter. Right?

Really appreciate all of this info! It's great to have you chime in and now I'm even more excited for these sonics.

I had a sneaking suspicion that magnets were used to make a circuit without the need for wires extending and retracting (And possibly then snapping). In fact, I was planning on using that technique when I modified my toy version of the 11th Sonic.

I'll be looking forward to seeing that! :)

Now this is far better stuff than a thousand prototypes. And if time and cost are high, then it looks like it will be a small price to pay for what we will be getting (poor choice of words, but you know what I mean).

One thing though, as they are going to be such close close replicas of the props, I assume that they will not feature any sound, as obviously the props did not, and changing that will not make them as accurate as you seem fixed on getting them. This is more than fine with me, I already have some with sound. I liked the MFX masks which were a further line of manufacture exactly the same as the screen used versions, as this project now seems to be. So no sound is cool.

It was the lack of communication that has driven everyone nuts. So thank God someone understands that it is needed.

I may be in the minority, here, but I would gladly sacrifice internal accuracy for sound and a more stable unit(word is that the actual props are pretty delicate).

Thanks for all the great info, Kenney!

I'm really surprised we haven't seen more pics of these yet. If you've got or have found pics of these props from comicon, please post them.

Most of mine were blurry but here's a crappy shot of all 4 of them:

I too am interested with the sound function, but would understand if its not in the cards. Glad you're here to keep us posted like you've been doing - and I, personally don't mind the lengthy replies - as a matter of fact, I welcome it. Just like you stated, Kenney, we collectors have high expectations and often times get a little over anxious about this stuff, so the more in-depth you get the better!

I think you guys are dead on target doing them exactly like used on the show. There are quit a few toys and other replicas that do the lights and sound thing but this will be the only dead on screen accurate versions out there. There is definently a market to be served there. Now that I know what has been done in the development of these and that dead on screen accuracy is the end game I am way more excited to get one. :lol:lol:lol

Heres' one, but it's proof of CT having access, cropped from two of his reference piccies...
