I know micdavis' head is going to explode, but I have never liked any of the 'Ape' movies.
With the exception of the first and (to a lesser extent) third entries in the series, the Apes films are by no means great movies. "Conquest" and "Battle" are damn near unwatchable. "Beneath" gets points for being so utterly over-the-top it could have been directed by Sam Peckinpah.
Thing is, the POTA series was the pre-Star Wars sci-fi film franchise, and for that reason alone it will always hold a special place in my heart. At a time when very few sci-fi/ fantasy films were being made POTA presented audiences with something fun and different.
No one has ever mistaken the "Apes" sequels for great works of cinematic art, but placed within the proper context it's easy to understand why sci-fi fans "of a certain age" find it hard to write them off.
For all its flaws there's something timeless about the original POTA.
