Power Rangers (MMPR) 2013 Legacy Morpher (Die Cast Metal) 20th Anniversary

Okay while I generally dislike Power Rangers (except for some of the females), the prop collecting side of me likes it.

I feel like I'm being torn in two on a metaphysical level!

I managed to snag one (the last one!) at my local TRU yesterday. It's a pretty nice piece. The metal construction is a nice touch, although the paint job leaves a bit to be desired (mine came out of the box with a chip in the black paint). The metal coins are nice too, and I like the belt clip as well. I don't know if it's just me, but whenever I press the button, the lights flash and play the MMPR theme song...? I seem to recall the original morphers made an electronic sound similar to the one on the TV show. I think I'd prefer that to the theme song.

Other than that, it's not bad for $50. I'm hoping they re-release the MMPR blaster/sword as well.

I'm glad I ordered mine yesterday rather than waiting to consider if the gold morpher would ever be released. the green ranger coins are already gone. and there are less than 60 white ranger coins available (assuming 5 packs of 10 left means their total stock is below 60). now I just have to figure out if the die cast morpher plates will survive a trip through the powdercoating oven. I have the absolute perfect gold color.

I'm jealous of every one who has managed to find one in person. I'm not fast enough in my area so I'll think I'll go the preorder route.

It will go great in my Red ranger display and will be my first morpher. Now if only my helmet would clear customs! :cry

Thought I'd post my pics here. The starlight studios coins arrived today and I immediately began masking off the decals. Then I used the old can of 18 karat gold krylon I had laying around. it was very close to the accurate testors #1244 color. However, I wasn't happy with the overall durability. I do want to be able to use the belt clip without fear of ruining the paint. So, I spent the next hour stripping the gold and original paint. I then powdercoated it with a color called imitation gold from powderbuythepound.com. The new decals will be here next week (stickers) so it will be finished then. in the meantime, here's some pics of the original paint and the new powdercoating. Let me know what you think!

I attacked my coin with a magic eraser to take off some of the weathering

that is pretty bad ass right there. I'm considering modding my legacy morpher and I would love to know how to remove the plates without damaging the morpher itself. Would you be able to highlight the process of the plate removal?

if you "activate" the morpher, the plates open and reveal 2 screws on the back of each plate. remove them and it will pop right off.

I briefly worked stocking at a Toys R Us during Christmas time for a little extra cash years back. Anything that was really popular and coming in would often times be pulled by the full time employees so they could buy it and then resell it themselves. I guarantee you that's what happened.

So I was at a local T'R'U yesterday, and was looking for one of these. I was perusing the Power Rangers stuff, and I noticed one of the Legacy Megazords (but not the morpher, unfortunately). A T'R'U employee walked up next to me and started analyzing the shelves too. He picked up the Megazord and stared at it. So I turned to him and asked if they have any of the morphers in stock. He didn't even say anything, so I went on to explain what the morpher is. But he just kept staring at the Megazord box. He finally told me no, they didn't have any morphers. So I made some comment about how hard they are to find and that they're going for big bucks on eBay already. So this is his reply: "Yeah... just a minute ago, someone called looking for this. And then my buddy told me that they're worth a lot." He then walked away with it under his arm, laughing.

Not that this is any revelation... but clearly, we know where so many of these things are probably are going.

I managed to snag one (the last one!) at my local TRU yesterday.

Which T'R'U were you at, if I may ask, MasterJedi? I'm in NJ too, and would like to try to find one. (Maybe that location will get more in.)

In case anyone wants to customize yours, here is the DIY I posted on RB
~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~

LIST OF MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Legacy Power Morpher
  • 220 grit sand paper
  • container for screws
  • philips head screwdriver
  • BD15 LPM decals
  • Gold spray paint of your choosing
  • Clear coat

Order new decals from BD15. The legacy set is $12.50 shipped
RangerBoard

With your morpher "open", look for 4 screws (2 on each plate), on the underside of the plates.

Remove the screws and set them, and the plates to the side.

Once the plates are removed, lightly sand them with 220 grit sandpaper. You dont want to leave scratches, just rough the plate up a bit.

After sanding, you will want to do 2 light coats of paint. Use a sweeping motion, keep about 1 foot away from the plates, and dont stay in one plate for too long.

This image is after the first coat:

I let my paint dry for about 35 to 40 minutes between each coat.

After the 2nd coat is dry, do the same, but with the clear coat.

Once the plates are dry, reattach them to your morpher. By this time, if you have the decals you can move onto the next step.

Carefully line up the decals and slowly apply them to your morpher.

I don't know if it's just me, but whenever I press the button, the lights flash and play the MMPR theme song...? I seem to recall the original morphers made an electronic sound similar to the one on the TV show. I think I'd prefer that to the theme song.

Can anyone else confirm this is how their morpher operates? I'd much rather the sound effects as opposed to the theme song...

Hey, Alex... that looks absolutely terrific! Let me ask you this-- is the gold you chose for the powder coat opaque? I was considering a translucent gold instead of an opaque gold, as to let some of the features of the silver metal show through. I don't want to call it a "texture," but just letting the surface quality of the silver metal show through might be kinda cool. Did the metal deal with the heat of the coating process okay? Also, what'd you use to strip the paint off? Did it damage the metal at all? Thanks for any info!

it is opaque. I don't have a trans gold color as my usual places don't seem to carry that color

the metal seems to have dealt with the heat just fine, but I can't see the surface anymore, so I'm not sure if there was any discoloration or anything like that.

stripped the paint with laquer thinner. soaked it for a while, then rubbed, then soaked, then rubbed, etc.
