Pirates of the Caribbean -- Dead Man's Chest

You know...I got a postcard from a friend today who had just been there...Telling me of the changes.

And my first thought was Oh Crap. They're going to do the Mansion next.

I'll tell ya...I do enjoy the Pirate movies. But it's supposed to be the other way around. Let's see the movie show more of the ride instead of the ride reflecting the movies.

"Dead men tell NEW Tales."

I caught the ride yesterday as well, and only had to wait 30 minutes, to boot...

The additions are intriguing and well done. But Jack seems somewhat out of place in that the sculpt and finish on the figures is at a higher quality level than the rest -- it is more realistic, and thus somewhat out of place.

Also, after getting off the ride, it clearly dawned on me that the tone and atmosphere of the original ride, compared to the tone of the movie, is distinctly different. The ride is a whimsical caricature, where as the movie is intense, realistic (live actors anyway), and dramatic. The tones of the ride versus the film are a bit incongruous...

To understand this better, imagine the film's greatest action sequences, but not with the strong, dramatic, and driving musical score of the film, but with the "Yo ho, YO ho" tune instead...

Or reverse it -- imagine the ride's mayor being dunked in the well, his wife saying "Don be cheeken, Carlos..." with the film's main title score playing...

Mixing the two doesn't really work.

I realize the additions of the ride are minimal, and they weren't trying to blend the two to the extent that I've described, but nonetheless this incongruity became apparent -- at least to me...

YES. That's the thing that I did notice, but hadn't really realized until you said it.

I've only seen photos and video, but I noticed that, too. Especially in the barrel. The guy in front of him is an exaggerated caricature, and there's a very realistic Johnny Depp right behing him.

Yeah the mix of realistic characters and cartoon really doesn't fit well.

Man, this reminds me of when they felt the need to stick that stupid animatronic Ellen into the Dinosaur into Energy ride at Epcot. Lame-o.

After being unethusiastic to see a film based on a ride, I was immediately hooked into the action and surprisingly found myself loving the movie. So much so that I was really excited to see the ride it was based on when the family and I went to DW on the 12th. Unfortunately, it was still closed for refurbishment.

So I've still never seen the ride. :(

At that point, we did want to park hop so I could get my Star Wars and Indy fix, so we didn't bother to go look around the area the ride was in. (That and it was raining all day.) So I don't know if they have anything on display in Florida.

One addition to the ride I really liked (as befitting to a prop-junkie like meself.) was the Aztec gold stone treasure chest (reportedly the original prop) added into the maind treasure room/cave of the ride.

Hehehe guys I never said the Mansion was what they're looking at updating next.... the Mansion in Cali actually had an update recently that they didn't even broadcast... it deals with the ghostly bride in the attic, which they redid, and her many ex-husbands that populate the Mansion...

And here's a video of the new bride...

New Bride footage

But like I said, the Mansion isn't the ride that's next on the refurb list....

Oh and mmarosy you do know that the Indiana Jones show was killed a while back right??? It's now some stunt spectacular show.... :unsure

My guess on which ride is next on the refurb list?

Star Tours. What else is left for them worth refurbishing? It's a Small World?

A new Star tours would be amazing.

I honestly can't believe that it hasn't been updated and changed several time since it's inception. Seems like a perfect ride to do just that kind of thing with.

Nick

I was hoping for a new Star Tours when EP3 came out. Maybe they'll update it for the 30th next year if we're lucky. I doubt it with the other projects going on for Uncle George.

Can't wait to see the new Pirates ride.

You sure? Cuz the newish stunt show is not in the same location as Indy. They got rid of a good chunk of the backlot (the residential neighborhood) to make room for it.

Well if you mean that car one, that's seperate from indy. Lights cars action or something like that. Where it's cars and motorcycles..
