It was alright. A lot of clumsy exposition to paper over the time jump, but the general setting and the roles of the characters is about what I want from a TNG follow-up. I enjoyed the focus on aging, time, and regret, which felt like a natural topic for these characters at this point in their lives; and by focusing that talk on romance specifically it found a fresh angle that avoided the trap of feeling like it's doing the TOS movies, part 2. (Looking at you, ST: Nemesis.)
That being said, it still felt a little...disjointed. We have the Borg again, Gunian, Q, alternate timelines, playing catch -up with all the S1 characters, and of course the implication of another damn Mystery Box (TM) which I am beyond sick of. Can't they just tell a story any more?
What I'm most depressed about is how it looks like the season shot its wad, budget wise, on this first episode. I'm not looking forward to seeing them traipse around 21st century Los Angeles for the rest of it, like it's a mid-season episode of Voyager. Or, if that's not what thee rest of the season is going to be, that's what the trailers sure promised.
I'm also wary because I really liked the Picard series premiere, and the season that followed blew every single thread and story idea set up in it. I have very low confidence, after Picard S1 and three full seasons of Discovery, that they won't blow it here, too.
