Pep to Molded Plastics War Machine,Gatling Gun,Stronger Mount and Other WM Weaponry!

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Ebay has pretty cheap rare earth magnets too,i have a variety, from 1/8"x 1/16" to 1/2"x 1/8". Theyre very strong

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Thanks for the eBay tip made007!

I was just trying to figure out how I was going to fiberglass that little shoulder pod and make it firm enough to accept Bondo and sanding ect...
bells2.jpg

I was going to basically fill it with Bondo resin, but thought, "HEY! I haver a case of 320 and 321 smoothcast.:lol
So I turned it over and poured in 1oz od 320 as that is a 10 minute set up, rotated it around to evenly coat the interior...then did another 1oz before it hardened...
320shoulder5.jpg

It worked out awesome!! :thumbsup The piece is as hard as fiberglass and just made my job simpler by far!
Just to show you how strong it turned out! This is one coat resin outside and smoothcast inside...
320shoulder4.jpg

Plus it sands and is plenty strong for Bondo!
320shoulder6.jpg

Soooo, Since that went well I decided to risk a shoulder bell for an experiment since they build fast...comparatively. *sigh*
320shoulder3.jpg

Prepped edges with tape
320shoulder2.jpg

Promptly poured in 6oz of 320 and rolled it around to form a skin.
Have to watch how tight you tape it...it sets up faster than 10 min but is very liquidy for the first 2-3 min
ended up with this,
320shoulder.jpg

I had to go back and do each side of the bell individually as not enough material stuck to the sides and it was too thin and floppy.

So in all it went well, but learned;:)

.use small amounts, the larger the batch the hotter it gets and the faster it cures. Almost messed up as it all started to thicken on one side of the bell mid rotation.:confused

.DO-NOT STICK ANYTHING IN THE HARDENING 320!!! Not a gloved finger, a popsickle stick or paint brush... when it goes OFF and starts to turn white it is incredibly sticky!!! It will stick to the object and pull it completely out of the area you are covering! Don't ask how I know and I wont tell. :confused
:$
. plan on doing it in sections that you can keep the dependant areas or lower parts evenly covered rather than expecting to coat the whole piece. That wont work. Here, on a piece like this, doing it in 3 sections would work really well. middle x 1 than sides x2.

.make sure your tape is very secure as big leaks = BIG messes that have to be fixed:angry
I.E. 30 min with dremel/covered in plastic dust/with respirator in 100 degree heat.:cry

. de-mask edges for clean-up once 320 goes all white.. it is still soft enough to clean up with an X-acto knife.

. For larger pieces, gonna use the 321 with 30 min set time.... more to report on how that goes later.

I do the same but with fiberglass resin, since smooth on shipping charges to pr are too high :(, but it works

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

You are so right man, the cost on the Smooth Cast is redonkulous! 90$ for two gallons!!! I am being very careful how I use this liquid gold they call Smoothcast 320.. LOL!

Man i can wait to start working so I can get me some of that smooth cast, cause if it works, forget about bondoing everything or fiberglassing, a good coding a littke bit of putty and primer we are in business then...

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Sure David!
edge.jpg

I am neither happy, nor un-happy with the edge...LOL! :unsure I would like a more square uniform edge, but am not going to do a do over for this...
It is just right in spots and thinner than I would like in spots, but weighing where it is thinner (under the shoulder pod assembly), I really don't need it super thick.
I was thinking a balsa edge or popsickle sticks to line all the edges with, but lordy that would be a ton of work to edge everything...:cry
I think as I practice sloshing the 320 around, I will get better at judging the edge thickness.
Also, leaving it alone with less sloshing should make it smoother and more uniform (less bumby and wavy). I was still sloshing on this first one when it was setting because I was trying to coat the whole thing. So it starts "dragging" as parts of the mixture start thickening faster than others, hence that "cooling lava effect" you see..
That will probably be solved by having your A, B, C cups lined up for rapid mixing, then doing each section, one at a time. I.E. Side 1, Side 2, Side 3.
so having 9 plastic cups ready to do this would allow you to quickly mix, then pour the next section while the previous was still spongy.. You definately want them to overlap while they are soft.:love
I did try to paint brush a section and it ended up so thin it peeled right off and shattered while I sanded it... This is definately a "pour it thick" situation!
I dont think I would like the 320 over foam, you would need something with flex and would need to sand your layers to get cohesion...

Its pretty strong

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Very strong!!! :)

320shoulder4.jpg

I only used the 12 pound dumbell as the 40lb wouldnt balance on the darn thing...:lol
That is ONE coat of resin Outside the pepakura paper part and 2 oz rotated inside the part.
It feels hard like a motorcyle helmet. Sounds like a Plastic tool box when you wack it with a tool!:lol
The shoulder bell is a little more springy as it is larger, especially at the edges. It has a small amount of flex that should help keep it from cracking. This stuff is very tuff!:):cool

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Im gonna use good ol' fiberglass mat, LoL , i have not too many options, plus i need to modify a few parts to look like the movie, when i have peped the full armor and finish my helmet ill start my thread :)

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

made007 awww man, why wait!? :cry LOL! Fill the ether with more War Machine builds!! I know what you mean about the fiber glass mat... I will probably do the chest with mat as well.. too many angles to cover... there is a medium for that works best for each part in my opinion! :confused:lol

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

I'm doing mine with fiberglass Mat also..I have access to out at all times..resin I can put it on the home depot card.. You should post your thread now that way we see progress and help each other out..I will be doing mods to mine also. I did minor mods to my helmet already you can see them in my thread

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Wow the days slip by so fast! Will I make Halloween....better have a back up plan.:cry Will I make Comicon Orlando or Miami next year? cooouuulllddd be?:unsure

Just finished both shoulder bells, now onto the biceps, then forearms then my arm guns.... Need the forearms done so I know where to place my mounting pins and magnets to hold them on... Thanks David for the idea about the gravity affecting magnets! They rock! LOL! As long as I stay aways off from anyone with a pace maker for their heart...:sick

Just put my neck seal in the second coat of primer...dopey me didnt read that this stuffs a 48 hour dry time....but the cool thing is it is the Dove grey that the suit parts will be painted in...uh um the ones that wont be matte black that is.:cool
Flash back!!!
War-Machine-Limited-Edition-008_1319460122.jpg

heres a few pics... not completely happy, but dam it s hard to keep the lines straight and the thicknesses uniform.. don't know how the clay/sculpt guys and gals do it? :confused

Looks a little like the back of Darth Vaders Helmet??. in grey.

Now I need to figure where I want to cut this to place magnets or decide if I want to mold it in urethane rubber like Davy.... still would beed to cut it though so may leave it hard shell. :rolleyes
The really good thing is it will be flat black and since only a tiny amount of War Machines neck shows, I'll live with this one till Im done with the suit, then upgrade when I start redoing parts...?:facepalm

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

What I truly would be in someones debt for is a ton of War machine Special Edition pictures with close ups of...well everything! Yes I am too cheap to spend 200$ for the action figure, that is 200$ that could be for the build LOL!
Thank you in advance!?

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

OMG! Thank you so much! :) I have torn the net apart looking for these or at least better then the same 4-6 the ads showed! These will help so much!:love
Thank you!:cry

If these aren't the coolest pictures, man I don't know! I hope others will like it as well when I finish the armor.:$
Any history other than it was in the comics?
