Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Just a quick picture heavy update.. Not much done this week as work was crazy with state inspectors in facility and Gallup poll, uuughh glad its done..
Only got the neck seal glassed, in primer and cut this week..
here are some pics;

This is my planned and measured cut line..
wanted to stay away from straight as i though alignment might be an issue especially if I have to suit myself up.

Also wanted the seams on the sides as you can see the front on WM but not the sides due to the shoulders

Like the way it fit the shoulders and neck.. though I am a bit thick necked it fits good.

Above and below you can see how it fits perfect under the helmet, I can even turn my head a few degrees LOL!

Really going back and forth about keeping this hard shell or molding in urethane rubber like Davy did... would still need to be split so for this MKI War Machine, I'll probably leave it solid, then redo it in rubber off of this original... times a wastin for too many redos now!:angry

helmneck7.jpg

There is a flange shape that fits up inside the helmet that makes a nice seal in the back.. I really like my choice in seam location, but really wish I had chosen rounded edges and or a less spikey shape near my jugular and carotids!! Hopefully when padded and the edges thickened for magnets I'll be ok.

Had to have my wife take this chest up to chin shot as my MK3 neck seal ended up too short under the neck showed too much skin. Might remake this using this template which is stagefivedrifts work and mod it by simplying the front to match the MK3. It would possibly be perfect for the MK3 as it fits so good under the shell.

One for the road, couldnt resist putting a spare set of red eyes in my Maskedrider helmet for a night vision shot! Looks menacing, cant wait for the whole set of armor to be done!!:)

Have to wet sand it one more time, than last coat of paint..
Pad the shoulder curve and place my velcro fasteners at the top and bottom of the seams...the padding is going to be a narrow piece of floor padding with a groove cut down the center that will be glued to the edge.. actually looks very professional! Pics later.:$
There is a pin at the center for alignment and to enhance the rigidity. Honestly though, once its under the helmet there is no issue. It is so tight as to be too airtight! Last 3-5 minutes inside and the air gets hot and stale!
I will have to put a cooing fan in the helmet as well.:cool

You know I have to say that I am going to love the armor in this color!!!:love

Wow looking great keep it up..radio shack has small fans that would fit inside helmet i saw them when i went window shopping and making my wish list..lol

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

So the War Machine shoulder bells have that neat bridge/armor piece that needs to be pep'd resin'd, glassed then painted. It is very flimsy :sick and will be difficult to keep from deforming or getting misaligned while all the work is being done to it... Think this will be a solution!:cool

Paper towel tube.. temp taping job, but Im going to tack glue it with a little superglue.

bellarm3.jpg

As you can see, it gives easy access to the underside where all work needs to be done, it will keep the heads square to each other and it is cheap!
Just cut to length..:)

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

That's a good idea..

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Oh lordy, oh lordy, it has begun! Started mixing the hated Bondo for its first application on my shoulder bells.:lol
It has started and no one will see me or my house or my armor without that telltale sheen of Bondo dust until I am done. :cry

Comicon, Megacon here I come!:cool

Doing it how Master Davy suggested! Thin, thin layers on small sections, so I can keep my edges and details!:)
Thanks Davy! I have to say though that when you start putting the bondo on then sanding it off, you can really see how the cardstock sags with humidity and the wetting the resin gives it before it cures! Just an interesting thought...to me...

P.S. The good thing about the next coming months wearing a respirator is that I will be used to half suffocating in my armor!!! Hypoxia = a good thing in this case! :confused

Looking good my friend; can't wait to see the results, I may be taking a sabbatical from my build until I resolve some stuff at home and feel better health wise...but I will be looking at everybody's build....

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Sorry to hear you have to take a break! You'll come back on fire and ready to blast through the build!!!
Don, thanks for the fan tip! I have an RS here close to the house so it should be easy to get! I think I am going to put a hinged compartment either in the arms under the ammo hatch or somewhere on the chest to put a very large LiPoly battery of high mAh or two to power the suit. Those fans for the torso and helmet will need some juice to run all day at a Con!
Sort or reminds me of when I was a kid and read my Iron Man comics like adults read the news papers. I always loved the part where Tony was almost beat, out of power and he staggered into a corner, opened up a hidden hatch and plugged himself into a wall outlet trying to be like my hero! It always saved the day and dam near got me burned when I plugged naked Multistrand wire into the outlet in my bedroom trying to be like my hero! LOL! My folks never figured out why the outlet was black and never notice I kept my burned fingers hid for a couple of weeks! The wires went incandescent!
Speaking of incandescent, we've had no A/C since Tuesday! Floridas 90% humidity and almost 90* in the house! Priceless! Just glad all my peps had been coated in resin or I would have piles of mush right now! Good thing it will be fixed tomorrow! Just in time for the hurricane. Gotta love florida!

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

Had a great time at Star Wars Celebration VI today down in Orlando where I live! :) Learned tons!! :love Found out there is a local supplier for the Smooth-On/Smoothcast product lines here in Orlando!!! No more shipping costs, Annnddd they do seminars and classes on using their materials!! :lol I can learn mold making ect.. just looked up pricing, 75$ for basic molding and 75$ for life casting seminars... 125 for both. They do include a lunch and starter kits though as well as the seminar!
Reynolds Advanced Materials | Everything for Mold Making & Casting
Really nice fellow named Tony gave me info and let me chatter is ear off LOL!:facepalm
Talked to a bunch of great armor fans from the 501st Legion and got a ton of information on helmet ventilation and made new friends!:cool
Special thanks to Firebat of 501st and RPF for his and his lovely wifes time! Man he rocks a great Imperial Tie Fight Pilots suit and helmet!
Anyone who has worn an armor suit and helmet knows how quick the air gets stale, hot and how quickly the lenses fog... I was very surprised that not one Vader wearer I spoke too had a helmet fan and how many Storm Troopers do? That Vader helmet is huge too and with that huge helmet over hang on the back, or the grill on the front, it would be so easy to stash a fan...Guess the Force works in mysterious ways! :confused

Re: Mixed Pep/Foam War Machine and Gatling Gun with Stronger Mount and other WM weapo

the idea of pasting the cut out templates back onto the foam then resin coating them is superb... it may increase the time, but as you said, its still infinitely less time than regular pep, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages... brilliant!
