Thanks for your indulgence; 2001 is my favorite film, and I wanted to have my 2001st post be 2001 related.

No doubt nine messages from now I will be talking about DOCTOR WHO or something and add a random pic of Roy Scheider.

One of my more shameful admissions is that I've never seen 2001.
In honor of Larry, I'm going to remedy that.

Awesome! Make sure to let me know what you make of it. Even if you don't dig on the subject matter, it's kind of a triumph as a film, you ask me.

2001 is a great film and one of my favorites.

I just upgraded to the Blu-ray and all I can say is wow! It's amazing how good it looks after all these years. Who the hell needs CGI anyway!

I remember when I went to see it at a revival house in the early eighties down in Brattleboro and I realized Dave's suit was red instead of faded orange. A first-rate presentation makes all the difference.

"And what do you want for Christmas sweetie?"
"A TELEPHONE!"
"We already have a telephone."

Only Kubrick could have done that movie. I saw it at UT during one of my Films that Changed Everything film class retreats. The greatest thing about that night was a guy spoke before the film ran, giving us information about Kubrick, the book and how the film was received when it came out - then he went into how this movie got Kubrick his next job - faking the moon landing for the government. He said this like it was a matter of fact, no hesitation in the statement. People kinda looked at each other and then the film ran. i must say - it was kinda cool watching it with that floating in the air.

Be warned it's slow paced for some viewers and is hard Sci Fi.
Recommend night time viewing with no disturbances, viewed in one sitting.

Maybe he was just dicking with ya, I hope!

If you really want to enjoy it, on the second viewing queue up Echoes off Pink Floyd's Meddle and start it as soon as the "Jupiter"... Placard comes up near the end.

Absolutely amazing.

To prove how nutty I am for this movie, when my son was six weeks old (when I had a lot of other things on my mind), I took time out of my day to make this photo:

There were Movies before 2001 and then there were Movies after.

2001 changed so so much.

Seeing it in blu ray , on a big screen TV with a good sound system is a good start ..but believe me if you ever have a chance to see it on the big screen in a theater ...go. it is a totally different experience. :thumbsup You get into it so much more and you get so much more outta it. And...you don't even have to be stoned to be blown away. :confused

I wonder if they'll ever make the other two books in the series into movies. I know that a lot of people don't like 2010, but I always thought that it was OK...

The book ended with this line.........

“For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next. But he would think of something.”

That was a good place to stop.
I don't think there is much you can do after an act like that that isn't going to fall flat.
