Omigod..Roger Ebert..(no, he didn't pass)

Yeah, had to have a ton of surgery, which completely changed his appearance. He also lost his voice, so computer programmers sampled his voice from previous recorings, and created a text-to-speech program that sounds just like he used to.

Oh god... I hate to say this, but when I first saw that pic I was like "who's that old lady? Where's Ebert?"... geez, that operation did a number on him. :unsure

One of the worst parts is that he cannot eat or drink ever again. How awful is that?
I guess he has to be fed by a tube or something.

He's had a few failed surgeries trying to reconstruct his jaw with various parts from around his body. The doctors think they can fix his voice with one more surgery but he's does not want any more work done.
The poor man cannot eat or drink, and needs a feeding tube.

Considering what he's gone through....I expected him to look worse.

Wow, the last time I saw him on TV, he looked like Marlon Brando in The Island of Dr. Moreau and was wearing a giant mumu. He's less than half the man he used to be in size.

I saw that Photo & was thinking the same thing! Who is that Old Lady? WOW!

I thought he had passed away, and like many here, I did not realize all that he has been through!!

I'm a bit surprised nobody had known this. Maybe it's because I'm from Chicago but Ebert has been this way for years. He still writes the best review column for film. I don't trust anyone else.

Holy Crap! I went through Tyroid Cancer Surgery last June & don't think I realized how well my surgery & treatment went till I saw this. We'll be praying for Roger in our house tonight.

I'm a bit surprised nobody had known this.

Yeah same here. No offense to any posters who did not know- I've seen pics of him for a year(?) now.

That pic next to Oprah actually doesn't make him look too bad. And as to being happy- well he says he is... but you can't go by his face; he always looks like he smiling with his (lack of a) jaw.

Any interviews I've seen him in his expression doesn't change- at all.

But- the man has said that he is happy and thankful. And he has a wife that loves him dearly and has stood beside him though all of this. And that alone is a reason to keep on living. :thumbsup

I guess what I find so shocking is how tiny he seems. :confused

I've never seen him in person, but I've always imagined him a tall burly guy.

Yeah- I suppose I have had no idea how tall he really is (I guess I've always seen him sitting). But he used to be huge before the surgeries.

mrs.slave1pilot also faced the idea of never eating or drinking again.
The thought of it is much harder mentally than you can imagine.
She tore her espophagus and had surgery in Oct. Prior 2 that her throat would close and she was unable to swallow most food for nearly 9 months prior to that.
Aftert her surgery, She had a feeding tube for 3 weeks and could not eat at all,and hated it.
She has made a full recovery from her near-death Throachotomy and can eat and drink without issue, but has been in constant pain for 6 months from some nerve problems in her neck.
She's 40
