Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 1 Resin Stunt Lightsaber Research

The Salt and Pepper OWK has thicker rings inside the emitter compared to the TPM, the nipple on the pommel is also a different size. The picture from that tour photo looks like the TPM shapes to me compared the S&P.

Well there are at least 3 (possibly more) different metal salt shakers that I’m aware of.

Painting Update: my custom ordered spray paint came in today. I got a gray primer, a black base coat, a silver metallic top coat, a white base coat, and what is supposed to be the brightest neon green paint available.

I’ve been doing tests on a scrap resin casting that has ZERO prep after coming out of the mold besides being washed with soap and water. So far I am very encouraged by the results. It goes on just as smooth as the Tamiya and if ordered in a larger batches (I just ordered samples for now) will be way more economical than the Tamiya as well. The down side is the 2-4 week lead time, but that’s not too bad. Here’s after 2 coats of black:

Pretty damn happy with the silver metallic paint too. Ignore the generally bad paint job, I was just testing the spray on a small area.

Here’s the new silver:

If I was trying to replicate the look of real aluminum, the Tamiya is still slightly better. BUT I think the new silver is closer to the stunt props.

I don't know if it's a copy directly from ILM/prop department, but asavage appears to have a painted Obi EP1 Stunt although I don't know if he painted it himself or if he received it already painted (pics taken from the Mythbusters 'Shop Till You Drop' episode from the early 2000s. If he still has this saber and it is a direct ILM copy it would be cool to see any pics he could share and any info on painting he could offer (paint type, color, etc...)

For what it’s worth, Rustoleum Aluminum 7515838 is a pretty good match to the props I’ve been lucky enough to handle personally.

Krylon Metallic Aluminum 2766 is good as well.

Adding some Rustoleum Satin Clear Enamel 285092 can help reduce the “metalicness” of the paint and get closer still.

Also there is a decent amount of variation among the props I’ve seen and handled personally. Both within props from a single film and across films.

If you’d like me to do some comparison photos against original props, I’d be happy to do so.

As always, your expertise is appreciated! What kind of comparison did you mean?

As in, if you’d like your paint scheme photographed next to an original prop, I’m happy to help. Just send me what you want to test, I’ll photograph and send back. :)

I’m happy to do multiple rounds as you work through it.

You are the man!

I am now starting to doubt that there is any o-ring there at all. It could simply be the bottom of the resin emitter core. The wear pattern is similar to that of the other resin parts of the hilt. If it's a rubber o-ring, why isn't it cracked and dried out? It could also look like some epoxy oozed out and is flaking off that area.
Sorry to get off topic again, but I read this and it reminded me that the Darth Hez version was made this way. The o-ring was just an extension of the black piece under the emitter and is held together by the red and brass valve.

I definitely still believe it’s some type of torus shaped object. In the high-res hero images you can kind of see that it curves back around and under itself. Anakin Starkiller confirmed this for me with his resin stunt.

It is also definitely cracked and just LOOKS like a degraded O-ring. Some of the resin stunts did capture the o-ring in great detail:

I’m positive it was also, it was just an observation. On some of the resin stunts, like the image you posted above, I even noticed what looks like a groove for the o-ring to seat in. Is that a true physical feature or just something I am misinterpreting?

I think there may have been a groove or step down that the o-ring was sitting in. A miss on my part.

I don’t consider it a miss. Was near impossible to see to begin with. I’m still over the moon with mine.

So much so that I‘m looking at selling the DH and the previous aluminum and delrin Starkiller Obi I have.
