Nylon Bullwhip tutorial-pic intense

Here is an idea I have for my next whip, which if all goes well will be a 10-footer. Let me know..good idea or bad idea? (I know it looks terrible...best I could do with what I have at the moment...and sorry it's so hard to read...forgot to change the text color. *lol*)

Glad you like the tutorial...
About the you tube video...
The whip you made is a REAL whip. More so than 99% of what you see on ebay. I am a bit offended to imply otherwise. Nylon whips have in some competitions out done their hide brothers in both speed and accuracy.
Keep cracking,

Ron

My apologies.. I didnt intend to offend in any way. I should have stated it differently.
What I meant by it was that while someone might not think much of one because of what its made from (since they have not seen or used one).. That its an awesome whip.
I'm really sorry about that. I might have to re-shoot the video. I did it late at night and as you can probably tell by the way I trail off at the end I wasnt very clear headed.
(I actually KNOW that its a real whip from experience... I was trying out different swings and got myself a few times lol I suppose I had it coming ;) )

i just finished up my whip last night, and man, it cracks a lot better than i thought it would. in my anticipation to get cracking, after 6 hours of sitting on the front porch and plaiting for 6 hours, i tied the fall and cracker on, and whipped it around, completly forgetting that it most likey wasnt a bright idea to do this without a shirt on.... but i did manage to get it to crack! i even got my neighbor to slam his window shut, since it was around midnight or so when i finished.

i still have the turks head knots to go, but im pleased with it for now, ill let the welts on my back die down for a few days before i finish the rest of it

Glad you guys are still using the tutorial...
Here are some pics of one I did today...
8 ft Aussie style Bull whip.
16 plait with 12 inch handle. This one really sings.

That's TOTALLY cool, dude!

Questions:
1. What is "Aussie style"?
2. Why did you go with a 12" handle (or is that why it's "Aussie style"), & is there any benefit to doing so?
3. Is the spike for the handle, of a bigger diameter than the 8", or is it just longer?
4. To make the strand pattern, how many of what color did you use in the overlay?

Aussie style is the 12 inch handle, same spike but 12". Of course they prefer stockwhips o'er there hence the long handle typical of their bulls.
The long handle acts as a fulcrum. Completely different action, but SUPER easy to crack. The absolute best design for beginners.
Pattern was easy...the short strands are tan and ganged together, the long strands are black and also together. Drop the tans 2 at a time keeping the spacing even. If you count the tan strands they drop from sets of 4 to 3 to 2 etc...till the dark brown tail. Careful...if you dont start it straight and keep it that way it'll look really bad. I HATE doing these. :angry
Ron
16 plait is 8 dark brown and 8 tan.

Sorry for the late reply...I couldn't see the writing on the image on my monitor for some reason...It should work. I would add in the extra strands and bind them under the leather for the knot. The 4 that comprise it loop/thong will lock the others in place. Make sure you bind them super tight so they dont pull through when you begin plaiting the thong.

So, in spite of thinking that I'd never make one of these, the fantastic results that have been posted here have inspired me to collect the parts and give one a try. I have everything gathered except for the cracker (and the time set aside to actually put it together). Any suggestions on what to use?

For the cracker?
Regular nylon twine. Available in any color you want at the home desperate.

'Nother question.

When you build/place the smaller THK (the one designating the end of the handle/beginning of thong), where exactly should one put it, in relation to the tip of the spike? (I just guessed on my first one)

I put em at the end of the spike before the bound transistion. If you want a shorter looking handle you can move it down a bit. Just don't put it on the thong itself as it could fly off.

More:

Out of curiosity, can you give me the approximate diameter of the handle of the 16-plait 8-footer you made?

bullwhipcracker, another question regarding the 8 foot whip. I am just about done with the second belly (I cannot believe how much longer things take with the kids back in the house now that summer camp is over :rolleyes).

Do I apply another binding at the transition, and/or a tape bolster, before doing the second overlay? If so, how long should these be?

Sorry for the delay...
Handle diameter is about one inch.
I do bind the transition again. About 6 inches should do. Tape, as always is optional...but I use it.
Ron

ROCK! I just received a 1000' spool of paracord in the mail. I have decided that my next whip will be "Aussie style", so I already purchased the 12" spike.

bwc, I know this has been covered (in a round-about way) previously in the thread, but I want to be sure that I get the measurements right with regard to length, & without too much cord-waste either. SO, just to be thorough (or is it "anal"?), could you give me a quick breakdown of the number & length of strands that I will need to cut for a whip:

A.) *that will be an 8' whip
B.) with a 12" handle
C.) with 2', 3', & 4' loaded cores + an 8' (inner-strands intact) core

Thnx bro! :cool:thumbsup

* built using the 6' tutorial, with the 16 plait overlay to extend to 8' (per your recommendation).

You have 1 certainty, the length. If you are ending in a 4 plait you will need 4 strands at 16 feet. If 6 plait you will need 6.
I'm sorry dude, but ^THIS^ just went straight over my head. Maybe dumb it down for me? :lol

I do plan to end in a 4 plait.

BWC: Going from a 16 plait to a 4 plait involves 6 drops. I had planned, for my 8 footer, to drop first at 2 feet, then at every 1 foot distance thereafter. Does that sound about right?

Wetwarez,
Let the whip dictate the drops...as it depends on taper. on 16 plait I usually end up haveing to drop pretty soon after the pin.
When they start bunching up drop a pair.
Your formula sounds loosely correct...BUT I have found that the middle strands do tend to run a little longer at times.
