Nylon Bullwhip tutorial-pic intense

OK, so I couldn't put it off. First I'll say that I didn't go buy any paracord, since I was uncertain as to whether or not I'd be able to pull this off.

Anyway, I remembered that I had some nylon cord (of similar weave & diameter) in the garage, so I thought for my first attempt, I'd try that.

I'm pretty darn pleased with the finished piece, so I'll be purchasing some paracord (in a more manly, bullwhipping, macho, buttkicking color) directly. Here are my results:

Secondly, I'd like to thank 'bullwhipcracker' again, for offering this awesome tutorial. I had looked at (& purchased) some whip-making books, but I was never able to get anywhere constructing a whip, until this thread. You rock.

HOWEVER, due, undoubtedly, to my own stupidity, I was NOT able to wrap my brain around the Turk's Head knot (even though the tutorial was as thorough as any I had ever seen). A couple of days ago, I tried for 3 hours to tie that thing, & ended up with a headache & a large supply of self-disgust. I know you said we could come to you if we had any questions, but I am stubborn & was determined to figure this out the hard way.

So, for about a day, I searched & searched, trying MULTIPLE different techniques, until I finally ran across a quick tutorial. Even after downloading the pictures (& converting them into an Adobe .pdf file (offered below for download)), I still had to try to tie the Turk's head (on my fingers, just like the tutorial) about 6 times before I got it right. The cool thing was, after SO MANY attempts, that when I finally DID get it right, I was able to build BOTH knots (on the whip itself) on the first try.

It's late, so I haven't tried cracking it yet. That'll be tomorrow after work.

Anyway, this has been a really cool project, & after I build another half dozen or so, I may look into purchasing a cow (or dare I say: kangaroo) hide, to take this newfound skill to the next level.

P.S. bwc, do you think you could take some close-up pix of the transitions (where you drop strands), so I can really see the details? That was a big worry for me; wondering whether or not I was doing it properly. Thanks bro.

Man oh man...that looks great!
I want some of that white cord myself! I just wonder how long it'll stay white?
I just finished a big heavy 8 footer. Gotta rest the hands for a day.
I'll take pics of the drop points, on sunday, but I think you nailed it.
Good looking out on the knot tutorial...they really are bears.
Please add it into the original pdf.
As far as hides go...you'll likely need 2 kangaroo hides...or a cow/kangaroo combo. Cow works good for bolsters and bellys.
Most impressive effort.
Now get CRACKIN'
Ron
Don't forget CRACK can be addictive!
WOW that white whip looks incredible!

Another question: what kind of knot is best to use near the end of the cracker? The reason I ask is, the knot I used keeps trying to come undone, which would unwind the cracker. And nobody wants their cracker coming un-wound, am I right???

Thanks again for the help, bwc, & the kudos everyone.

Simple overhand knot works fine...just give her a couple of hard cracks to set it.

wow, all of these are turning our really impressive, i ordered some paracord and started making one, ive got the core done now, i mistakenly didnt order enough cord when i added up the numbers, so the rest will have to wait. but these are turning out really nice! im not looking foreward to plaiting the rest, the core took me 6 hours!

Thanks for posting this up. Not something I would try myself but I found it to be a fascinating read. I always enjoy seeing how things are made.

Here's another question or two:

Is there a specific formula for the length of the ball-chain in the core, with regard to the total length of the whip? In other words, for a 6 ft whip, three core sections should be loaded with 1, 2, & 3 ft of ball-chain. For a "X" ft whip, "Y" core sections should be loaded with "A", "B", "C" (etc) ft of ball-chain.

Also, is there some formula for gaging (<--that spelling looks wonky to me, but it's not) what the various lengths of strands will be, for a specific number of whip-feet? In other words, if a 10 ft whip is the goal, then what length strands will one need. (i.e., X ft of cord = Y ft of plaited whip)

Thanks in advance.

P.S. In other news, I won't be building any 10 ft whips in the near future (I doubt I'll ever go past 8 ft). My hands are STILL sore. :wacko

And one last thing...the closeup of dropped strands, are you wanting a pic of the thong after the strand is dropped to see if there is a noticable difference or another pic of when to drop and what strand?
Mainly the first one, but if you wanted to show the second thing too, I won't complain. :lol

Great tutorial!
I'm gonna start on my own whip this weekend, IF I can manage to find the paracord.

These are outstanding. Thanks for the tutorial, BWC! :thumbsup

I'm thinking of trying one of these out, but ordering the artificial sinew has given me pause. Am I looking for flat or rounded? What about the width? About how much will I need, assuming I will have to bind the full six inches of empty cord to the spike? I've just not worked with this stuff before. :confused

Flat...
30-35#
Nowhere near as much as you have to buy.

Little update for you guys wanting to make a bigger, heavier bullwhip.
This is the tutorial whip with a 16 plait overlay brought out to 8"3".
K, more questions. 1. When you measure whip length, exactly what are you talking about? (End of Turk's Head to end of cracker, end of turk's head to end of overlay (is that the "thong"?), etc)

2. If ^THAT^ is the 6 ft whip from before; when you overlaid the 16-plait, was there any of the original core there for you to plait over or what? In other words, on my whip, the overlay goes to the end of the 6 ft core, then I have the fall, & then the cracker. So I don't understand how I could overlay a 16-plait on mine & extend it 2 ft.

Does anyone know a source (other than online) where I could find paracord? I've been to a couple of hardware stores in my town and they've never even heard of it. The Wal-mart hardware associate knew what I was talking about, sent me to sporting goods, and they didn't know what I was talking about. My local Home Depot didn't seem to have any of it either.
Maybe I'm asking for the wrong thing...wouldl anyone know paracord by another name/description? Just getting desperate here..seems everywhere I go, nobody has a clue what paracord is! :wacko (yes, I DO live in a small town, by the way...but not far from a much larger one)

I have never seen it offered out side of Military Surplus stores or online.
Good luck!
