I don't want to have shoes that look like socks with soles attached to them lol
Essentially the 1989 MAG (2015 in the film) was just that. A form fitting shoe that even has "sock type" written on the concept design. This is why the toe also seems to collapse when there is no foot inside.
The 2011 MAG has more foam to keep its shoe shape. My image from my last post didn't stick, so here it is again.
I still have some tweaks, but this pattern is coming along nicely and I currently am running a thread where it will available for free. It is fully scalable to any size. Once fully sorted, and if there is enough demand, I might consider investing in a commercial sewing machine as hand stitching takes about 6 hours per pair where on a machine, it would be about 15mins. The machine I've looked at costs $1850, so not something one buys because they are bored.
The mesh I am using in my prototype is strong. I probably should make a YouTube video of me attempting to tear it apart. combined with the thread I am using, it just does not rip. It passed abrasive tests (though it did soil from this) and it does not seem to get hot. I wore the upper pictured for about 15min last night and it was fine and my foot did not sweat.
Once these are done, I will be working on the soles.
