New Voyagers Omni

Had a bit of a breakthrough today on one of the problems with the dials. I originally wanted the dials to be 3d printed, but the resolution was just too fine for shapeways. I stumbled on a method of making your own electronics PCB's with black spray paint and a laser engraver. I figured I would give it a shot on 360 yellow brass, and see what happened.

Not sure if this is THE solution, but it certainly looks good. I'll try 3d printing the dials with out the engravings, and see if I can duplicate the results I got on the flat brass with some actual 3d printed dials. Also have to see how well acid black and red soaks into the engravings to give the correct contrast.
Here is the black for contrast

Rob, you are a man of unlimited solutions! I think the numbers look pretty darn snappy!

Brainless question (and I'm sure you've answered this before): is there no "0" for the year? So, if I want to go back to 1900...? ;-)

Yeah it's weird that there is no 00. At the same time there is no 20 for 2000. I could make it an option for sure

The Y2K bug prevents you from going to 1900 since it can't tell 1900 from 2000. ;)

Hi Rob -- you're too kind to offer additional options. For my part, I'd simply love a screen accurate omni! (Besides, didn't Bogg say in the Pilot that his omni only has circuits to 1970?)

Jintosh -- Y2K, that cracked me up!

I'll second that option of "20", or even "21", if it's all the same to you! But yes, any way we can get that fantastic Omni.

Looks great you can make it out the details. Like many looking forward to it. I have an Omni I purchased many years ago. A little bulky and heavy solid brass. I truly want an Omni more like the show. Like other fans so I am watchful like many to have one in my collection. Keep up the great work.

Great idea.....Can someone make a replica of the guidebook ? Straight up copyright infringement, but it's of an Officially released book. It's not like you're making a replica of one of our society's replicas. This is a gray area, but I'd love a book !!!

A guy did it already. He had a regular world history book recovered with stamped leather. There are companies that do leather cover replacement. Mostly for bibles, but they will do any design you want

Cool. Was it on the RPF ? I'd be nice to know which book, and how close in size it was. (off to browse the forums)

A recent internet search yielded a website which seems to have added information about the Omni, including the fact that the name is short for "Omni-Chronometer." It also has a photo of one of the "hero prop" versions as well as a recreated schematic by the original prop maker:
The Omni | Voyagers Guidebook
One new tidbit for me is that the schematic shows the underside having a bit of a curve, too.
In their photo roll, they have pics from Rob's first Omni run. (I still have mine!)
