The 'Star Wars' movie being made by 'Game of Thrones' showrunners will reportedly start shooting this year

David Benioff and DB Weiss are helming a new series of films for the sci-fi franchise

The first Star Wars movie to be made by the Game of Thrones showrunners will reportedly start shooting later this year.
David Benioff and DB Weiss were hired by Disney back in February 2018 to make a separate series of Star Wars films, which will not be associated with either the episodic Skywalker saga or the trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson.

The article says SW meets LOTR since it's hundreds of year prior to ANH.

There's established works that place the tech, more or less, at the same level as ANH going back thousands of years...I'm guessing they didn't mean low level technology, but not really sure what else it would apply.

They also want to appeal 'more or the GOT audience'? What? more violence and sex? :)

Yup. Very much so. So I'm hoping for good stuff out of them for old republic settings. An opulent and bloated Jedi order, a republic so vast and bureaucratic that it's not even common knowledge how far it's borders extend, or what takes place in the sequestered kingdoms that maintain their own borders and laws but swear fealty to the republic. Where safely charted hyperspace Lanes are still few in number, and travel lanes allowing you to get anywhere in less than a month are closely guarded secrets among those who have charted them.

plus, I mean, I think we all already know what we want it to look like.

The thing I never understood with the Old Republic stuff was that technically the Prequel era IS the Old Republic. Sure it may have been the final days of the Republic, but if this trilogy takes place thousands of years before ANH, how do you make it look and feel different from what we've seen on screen already? From a continuity stand point it HAS to look different from the other films because of the gap in time between this trilogy and the Saga films.

I mean will it essentially be King Arthur with Lightsabers? Will they be riding around on beasts of burden rather than speeders? Will spaceships and hyperspace be something that they only just create/ discover? Will it be an Enterprise type storyline where it tells the story of how the Republic was formed and that kind of thing?

Considering that the production design for all the films thus far have drawn from all different eras and cultures in our real world history then how it is that they can make the costumes look evolved at all when you're talking about an era that takes place thousands of years prior to what we've seen already? I mean sure they have designed and redesigned the stormtrooper costumes for example, but you also have to consider that those designs have come about within the 60 or so year span that makes up the Saga films. Naturally the armor would have evolved over time to suit the needs of the type of combat the troops would face, but Stormrtoopers and battle droids didn't exist back then no? So where do they draw their visual cues from when designing these kinds of things that will have some relationship with what we already know of Star Wars?

I think we have already seen the limits of what can really be done with some of the designs too when I saw the trooper helmets in Rogue One. There was one in particular that looked so out of place because it was a barely modified Vietnam War era helmet. It pulled me right out of the movie and while I understood the tone they were trying to go for, that visual cue just distracted me. Just like having the stupid bomber ships in The Last Jedi's opening made no sense to me. At least the TIE Bombers in Empire were dropping charges on an asteroid that had it's own gravity well.

I've watched the trailers and mini movies for the Old Republic games and to me they look like they take place in the Prequel Era and don't have much that distinguishes it from those films visually. They have Clone style trooper armor that didn't exist (as far as I'm aware) that look just like the ones in AOTC and ROTS when up until those films there was no galactic wide army and was the entire driving force behind the creation of the clone army in AOTC. To me this kind of thing just strikes me as messy and not well thought out, whether that is the game makers or on George is up for debate but I have a hard time, even as a hardcore Star Wars fan trying to understand how this works within the timeline. To a general audience I think it would be even more confusing.

I don't care for Game of Thrones so that connection has no appeal to me whatsoever. That is not at all a knock against these guys for their talent and has everything to do with the source material they based their show on. Seeing a gritty Star Wars with extreme violence and sex holds no interest for me. If I want that kind of thing I can watch other shows or movies.

I just don't know how you make a story that takes place a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away seem like it's dated and perhaps that's of no importance to most people, but to me it just seems like it's going to present some challenges for the story because they have to make it stand out from what has already been done before.

The more time that goes by and I can really see the limits of this galaxy in the way it's structured.

That was a really long post, that started with something along the lines of "how can thousands of years earlier look and feel different?"

The short answer is that it can, and it does. The architecture, ships, dress, and droids all have very distinctive old republic looks. It's hard to describe, and it's hard to point to any one source picture or video and say "that's what it looks like". For those of us that have played the KOTOR games, and read old republic comics, we know exactly what we expect to get, and we're Stoked.

Just have faith that when you see the movies, you'll get it. :)

If it's anything like Game of Thrones I'll be sure to miss it. If not I may give it a shot.

I'm sure they are creative enough to make a decent Star Wars movie or movies. Just because they work on GoT using the books as inspiration shouldn't mean they can't do anything different.

This and The Mandalorian are the only Star Wars things on the horizon I'm excited about.

I don't know much about these guys so it's not so much a commentary on their talent. There just hasn't been much released that piques my interest with this series as of late.

The original KOTOR games (set 1000's of years ago) didn't have a reduced technical feel. SWTOR, the current MMORPG doesn't have a dated feel either. Clearly, they aren't bound by the games though.

The 'prequels' tech seemed to massively outdate the OT tech. I get it on a multitude of levels, but we're supposed to believe they went from everyone having portable holo projectors and touchscreens to knobs and switches inside of 20 years?

Can you really take jedi fashion back farther than a robe and a belt? Can trooper armor go back much further, visually? :)
Can you do 'Star Wars' (generally speaking) without space travel (i.e. hyper drive)?

We never really saw advanced architecture - not really - of anything that couldn't have existed a long time ago. There's not a whole lot to 'regress' a thousand years worth I don't think.

You could go back to vibro swords instead of light sabers, but light sabers are iconic in Star Wars and without them, it's just not gonna work. There were the proto sabers, that used an exterior power supply. Still, something in the age of the ancient Sith and Jedi would be entertaining, despite which era they chose, and whether or not they use established characters like Revan. I almost hope they don't use any established characters, aside from an Easter egg or off hand reference. Start fresh and new with a new cast of characters, not a recycled OT, but something truly unique.

OK, i find it completely laughable they refer to 2022 as the first of these flicks and state 'a hiatus was necessary'....we're talking a difference of 12 months difference in the gap between 7 and 8 and 9 and 1 of the next series.

It's not a hiatus and it's not really a big break. There were 3 years between 1, 2, and 3 and originally 4 5 and 6.

They chickened out after solo on stand alone flick as quite frankly, there wasn't much need for any.

Maybe some good old fashioned sibling incest?
