I came across the site a couple years ago due to a google search and finally decided to join.
I don't have much at the moment but I've been collecting a stockpile of tutorials and reference pics to start building stuff I like.
I'll probably focus on stuff from bethesda games and whatever neat looking things I can put together.

hello everyone, this is Matteo from Italy. Long time lurker, finally jumped in and registered. My first project would be a Nebuchadnezzar designation nameplate replica from the Matrix, I've seen some around but I believe we should do better :) I'm mostly interested in sci-fi, horror and fantasy. See you around and thanks for the great source of inspiration.

Hello my name is Daniel from Australia

Ultra late! I am having an issue with posting my particular cute prop but it's the sort with the invisible ink and UV light. I know there's a more expensive version that works as a remote control, in which the thingy inside the anechoic chamber is a different (and accurate) colour (i.e it doesn't resemble a rope of black liquorice).

Well, it's nice to have a prop that has some useful function. I guess "remote control" is as good as any.

You can get a "Universal Remote" pretty cheap nowadays; it would be a simple matter to build a prop like a "sonic screwdriver" and scavenge the remote-control parts from a willing Universal. You can use as few or many of the features as you wish (channel-change, volume, power, etcetera...) You could also buffer the output (simple common emitter transistor) and run a blue LED, to make a nice "flicker-effect" for the screwdriver.

I once went BACKWARDS on a remote -- bought a tiny 5-inch television set, the remote they supplied had only "channel/volume/power". But all the features were there, just empty pins on the remote control IC. I assembled a tiny keypad with micro switches (glow-in-the-dark vinyl overlay with handwritten numbers and clear epoxy dot buttons), and had random access (0-9), channel recall, etcetera. It even had a "sleep timer"!

Of course, once DTV got rammed down our throats (Samsung, BestBuy, Cox, Direct TV bought congressmen), the TV and all that work on the remote is useless...
(Grrrr.....)

Hi all,

Bfdan here. I have create a few Item and R2D2 and a K-9. Love working on the electronic and robotics not so good with the cosmetic parts.

Anyways HI again.

Hey everybody!

I'm super, SUPER new to this stuff; I was stumbling around YouTube late one night and came across the "DIY Prop Shop" channel, and sort of fell in love with the idea of building my own stuff; I found this site after Adam Savage name-dropped it in another video. So, here I am!

As I'm just starting out from scratch, I figured my first few projects would be custom painting some old Nerf guns I had laying around. I've found some good protips re: paint brands, methods, etc. and am starting my first one today. I'll find someplace to post it once it's done so all the pros can tell me how butt it came out :p

Hi everyone
I am new to the RPF I live in Australia and love tinkering around have just purchase my first 3d printer and can not wait to start some projects. If anyone can help me with what programs I should be using and also the best places to get hold of some 3d files it would be very helpful as I want to build a 3d printer iron man suit as my first big project any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome! We'd love to see pics! About "cosmetic" -- having skills is a learning process; have fun while figuring out techniques and improvements. There's no such thing as a "mistake", they are just lessons on how to do it better next time.

:)

Welcome! It's getting harder and harder to find the "scratch" nowadays (worse in cooking)!

We're looking forward to your pics! :)

There are a lot of websites that list models (like "yeggi"). And some free converters that will convert formats to what you need.

Best luck, keep us posted!
(Uhmmmm, if you actually make an Iron-Man suit that FLIES, I want one!!!!!)

:D

Hello all!
I found the RPF a while back while searching for info on Star Wars blaster specifications. I'm a hobby knifemaker so I already have considerable experience working with my hands. I'm interested in learning more about casting, mold making, wiring sound cards, advanced painting, etc. I may also get into armor, costume making, who knows what else. There are so many interesting aspects to the prop hobby, I'm really enjoying exploring it all. I have four kids and they think dad makes cool stuff.

Hello, very long time lurker, finally decided to join! I mostly do Steampunk and Star Wars costuming, but also a bit of Doctor Who and others. I've also done theatrical puppets and props. Between that and miniatures and jewelry and woodworking....well, I guess you could say I've done a little bit of everything, though master of very little. ;)

Hello all,

I'm new to costuming, prop building, convention going, etc. I'm looking forward to learning all that the group has to offer, and sharing what I can in return. I've a handful of projects that I've queued up to start with (Star Trek Deep Space Nine era uniform and accessories, Weylan-Yutani/Nostormo officer uniform, LAPD 2019 detective ensemble, and a steampunk something).

Thanks in advance for your sage advice and patience.

Best regards,
Rick

Hi everyone. I'm Mag. I just found this site today!
I'm a professional costumer with a degree in technical theatre. Yes, I racked up a student loan debt to get a degree in sewing. I'm a special kind of crazy. I've been sewing since I was a little kid, and it's my all time favorite passion. I used to do a lot more personal cosplay stuff when I was younger. Now most of my work is for other people. Saves me a lot of closet space, at least? I mainly work in fabric. I haven't done a ton of huge prop work, and I'm not so good at armor and thermoplastics. Would love to get better eventually! Most of my clients like as close to perfect screen accuracy as I can manage. I secretly love taking on projects that involve techniques I've never done before, because it lets me expand my skills and learn something new. The internet is my best friend for this kind of work.
Some of the major projects I've done this year have been replicas of costumes from Broadway productions. I spent about 40 hours working on Meg Giry's outfit from the Masquerade sequence of the 25th anniversary production of Phantom. This summer, I'll be working on Peter Pan and Wendy costumes, based off another stage production, and a Hannibal Chau coat.
My dream costume for myself would probably be a Centauri Lady outfit from Babylon 5, to go with the Londo muppet I made in college.
....Maybe I should learn ventriloquism for that one.

Hey everyone,

Like many others, I've been lurking here for a very long time. I've been interested in props ever since using my mom's old curling iron as a lightsaber as a very young child. For now I hope to keep learning and working on my techniques, absorbing some of the unbelievable wealth of knowledge on these boards. I (of course) love Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Doctor Who, and more of the franchises with mega followings, but there are so many amazing props to be made from so many stories that I'm sure I'll never feel like my collection is complete.

Hey there!

I too have been here a little while but don't comment on much. I enjoy finishing out replicas/kits from various Sci-fi shows and movies, as well as making my own props, full on replica costumes and leather accessories.
I have a Leatherworking business and have been working leather for 20 years now! You name it, and there's a good chance i can make it. I'm big on doing collaborations with other prop makers. I see so many beautiful finished props that are just missing the supporting accessories or holsters/belting and I enjoy trying my best to fill those gaps in fabrications where I can.
Some of my favorites are *Both* Star Trek and Star Wars(I'm a heathen, I know!) Doctor who ( classic and newish) and pretty much anything with Aliens and Space. Hands down Farscape is my tops tho!
Feel free to chat with me if you have a project in mind and want some leather, or just to introduce yourself, happy to make likeminded/industry friends! Hope to see you all out and about, Keep on making beautiful pieces!

Good evening all! Long time lurker, first time poster!

I am currently an active member of the 501st Legion, a Scout Trooper with the Knightfall Squad based in the state of Victoria, in the country of Australia.
I have two Stormtroopers waiting their builds but recently I've decided I want to do something different!

I really want to do a Titanfall Pilot and would obviously love and appreciate any help or pointers on that. I've had a bit of a search and cannot find anything that really satisfies what I'm after.

Looking forward to interacting with this inclusive and kind community that I've heard so much about!

Hi, I am Alex and I have an interest in prop making of many different kinds. I have a small collection of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider helmets. I am interested in really getting in to pepakura, 3D modeling, anything really that I would be able to make a helmet with. I would enjoy making my own Destiny helmet. I really just find helmets of any kind fascinating. I would love a Samurai Pizza Cats helmet one day as well.

Hello fellow cosplayers and prop makers! Yes I am new to this amazing site that I saw in a YouTube video for making an Uncharted journal. I'm only 16 right now (17 in July) so I will admit some of my creations aren't great but I'm learning each step of the way and look forward to persuing this in college. I will say that I am a HUGE nerd and part of many fandoms so this is nice being part of a community that doesn't judge you because of liking certain nerdy things. If anyone is interested in seeing my work, here is a link to my business Facebook page KLRArt&Cosplay (the KLR is actually my initials lol) https://www.facebook.com/KLR-ArtCosplay-1496139420649173/
Like I said my work isn't that great right now but I would definitely appreciate the support. Thanks and stay awesome

Hi RPF! I'm a maker and a new engineer. My first prop build was a lightsaber hilt when I was 12 or 13 that I made out of plumbing parts from Home Depot and my first project getting back into props 10 years later is going to be a ANH Hero DL-44. My denix and accessory kit from Todd's should be arriving soon! I have access to a ton of resources since I'm affiliated with a well-known university that has an awesome maker space. I also build prototype 3D printers in my spare time! I look forward to many years of collaboration in the future. -Dags
