Hello,

I'm a huge Star Wars and Iron man fan and decided to try and put together a sweet costume for Halloween this year and found the site. I look forward to making my first costume and any help you guys and gals provide.

Re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hi, I'm Clay. I'm from Canada and during the winter I spend a lot of time in my basement building props/costumes. During the warm spring and summer (and sometimes cold fall) months I can be found cruising the floors of Expos (what we call Cons in Canada) as a part time cosplayer. I've been meaning to post for awhile, but so far I've just been lurking around like a creep, lol.

Greetings! I'm a model builder, and have been since I was 10. I owned my own scene, prop and mechanical special effects shop in San Francisco for 15 years, then went into the web design and development business with my wife. I build models now, but strictly for pleasure. I primarily build RC combat models of WWII warships. I've never built space-related models, but I'm a huge Star Trek and Star Wars fan, and I'm thinking about building a Star Wars replica of one of the early spacecraft, such as the Tantive IV from Episode IV.

I had the great good fortune of attending the Star Wars exhibit, Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination at the San Jose Tech Museum, just before the tour ended a couple of years ago. I took lots of photos of spacecraft, ground vehicles, droids, puppets, figures, weapons, armor and costumes. I'll share them here if there is interest.

Hi everybody
I've been stalking this website for a few weeks now as I'm looking to make a Han Solo costume. I have to say looking at the posts on here I'm getting lots of ideas not just for my Han, but also for some new 'toys' !!

Hello! I've been building props and models for nearly 40 years! Excited to see all the fantastic information, ideas and creations from others here! Still learning!

Hi I'm zak I'm 17, I've not been collecting too long but I've always been into films and dressing up or now cosplaying. I go to a few conventions and when I have the money add to my prop collection, some I make, some are replicas and so on so forth. I love films and I love the props so I've joined the rpf to be inspired!

I found out about the rpf from watching Tested. Com. Adam mentions it a number of times appreciating the community. I'm just getting into prop and effect building to supplement my skills in the work that I do. My partner and I develop and sell the VenueMagic Show Control software which is used all over the world to synchronize props and effects, with lighting sound and video. Here are some pictures of my most recent project where I was the technical and effects director.

I currently have two 3D printers. One I built using 1x2 wood and threaded rods. The other uses aluminum extrusion.

I'm starting to get into building props in general but I'm currently looking to build a bb-8 and Master Chief armor.

Hi all! I found the RPF through Shawn (protagonist4hire) and Adam Savage/ Tested. I really wanted a DL-44 as a conversation piece after my house is remodeled. (why buy artwork when you can buy/ build props). I've been lurking about 2 weeks and buying a couple things here and there. I am about to finish my first prop, a DEC Droid Caller. It's an addiction! I was very fortunate to find a DEC ANH DL-44 kit from a member here and a TC Arc Reactor. I've signed up for a couple runs and can't wait to get them. I don't have any prop building experience but can tell it's much more satisfying than Lego's.

Everyone on the board has been extremely helpful and pleasant! Can't wait to post some pics of completed props!

Hello,

It's seems like I've been learning & lurking around the RPF forever. I officially joined a couple of years ago, but life has that way of stepping on time, so... I've never really had much of a chance to participate or share my work. I'm a filmmaker (very tiny budget - one man show - shorts), musician and VFX artist (matte painting/art directing & concept) which has me 110% occupied.
But, as you know, the desire to create has the pull that leads me/you/everyone (I hope) towards others and the new, or old, with renewed eyes/ears/senses. Which is why I love art & film & music and all that makes those what they are. And I love it here, at the RPF, where creativity is actually celebrated. Hopefully I can become not just a lurker but much more of a participant in the coming year/years here at the RPF.

Best Regards,
Guy (therethere)

Salutations!!

Name's Rachel but I usually go by my costuming name, NightShine! *tips hat*
I've been costuming for a little over 2 years now and have recently begun my long trek into Star Wars-only builds.
I'm a shiny into the 501st (with le Darth Revan) and a self-proclaimed maniac.
I live on literal Hoth (aka WI in winter) and enjoy long walks through day-dream-land.
I have no idea why I'm formatting my intro paragraph like this lmao
I like to draw and binge watch TV shows (best was all 6 seasons of Clone Wars in under 2 weeks).
I am currently working on a legit Cad Bane and a group project: Wat Tambor and the Techno Union --
(we will literally be bringing the party to the cons *wub wub*).
I obviously have too much ambition and I blame it all on coffee and sick drop basses.

I'll show myself out now.

Hey Guys
just a quick hello, and thank you for an awesome place to be. Some amazing work going on. I'm an all round sci fi nut. (Except Dr Who, I can't get into that). Especially Iron Man and Star Wars.

Keep up the good work :thumbsup

Greetings, I'm Seth. In California.

I'm a very long time lurker-- like, back to the super early days. I think it was around a decade ago that I first came around. I'm here mostly for the lightsaber action.

Quick bio-- I was always interested in props and special effects as a kid (thanks to Star Wars of course) so I always took apart my toy blasters and repainted them. Flash forward 30 years, I work in the movie industry in Hollywood (though not in a prop or FX capacity). My job is really creative and awesome, but in the last year or so I started to feel like after my creative hobby finally becoming my dream job, I needed a different outlet for just no-pressure fun.

One day I was looking at a couple of my son's Nerf guns and thought they looked like awesome scifi weapons. A bit of googling and I realized there is an entire community of Nerf modders (cosmetic and performance). A lot of inspiration there, so I started buying used ones up and repainting them as a fun mind-blanking hobby.

After seeing TFA, my son stopped running around the yard with Nerf guns, having replaced them with a Dr. Who sonic screwdriver, but with decidedly lightsaberish mouth noises. So I thrilled him by digging out a box I hadn't opened in at least five or six years. Inside-- a legit graflex lightsaber.

Flashback-- in 1994 I was a photo major in college, and also a Star Wars fan in that space of time where Star Wars was not at the forefront of pop culture. So when I went to photo swapmeets I actually knew what I was looking for when it came to Graflexes. One day I scored. At the time I thought it was a good deal. 20 years later I realize it was an absolute STEAL.

Basically, this guy had a box of a dozen or so old flash guns. One of them was a graflex in pristine shape. I wanted to buy just it-- but he was determined "to get rid of that junk" and was only selling the entire box at once. I begged and pleaded, but he was firm. So I relented and spent all the money I brought with me that day to buy a box of a dozen flashguns...

$25.

I didn't realize I had scored until about a year later when the Star Wars technical journals came out and I realized the three Heilands I had were the basis for Vader's lightsaber. (This was long before the MPP discovery). I had two of the shorter shroud models, and one of the blockier Vader-style ones. What I didn't have was the right box, or calculator bubbles or anything else.

One Heiland and the Graflex were approximated with what I could find in 1994 (I actually tried riveting windshield wipers blades and failed) and for a time they were a prized possession. At a party during grad school some jerk walked off with the Vader Heiland. Some time in the last decade during a move the graflex went in a box and didn't come back out until now.

Since I was a frequent lurker here I knew all the parts had been identified over the years and repros were available-- I just never got around to getting them. So when the graflex came out a couple weeks ago I got some t-track grips and a calculator bubble insert to finally make it mostly ANH screen accurate. (We won't talk about how I, like many other 90s era sabersmiths, have doomed ourselves with a 2 rivet picture hanger D ring on the base... I blame only having VHS stills for guidance).

At any rate, I am back into it. After looking at the custom saber thread I am realizing that my dislike of PT style sabers is not unique to me-- and there are a lot of people making cool unique sabers out of other models of flash guns. So I called up my mom, and thankfully the box full of random flash guns is her basement where I left it 15 years ago. She's mailing them to me and I am stoked to see what's in there that I can get cracking on. (I'm pretty sure there is a Canon Y in there, which would be awesome since thanks to the RPF and TFA that sucker has gone from being worth $5 to $80-100!

Hi everyone,

my name's Vanessa and I'm from Germany. I've been a Cosplayer for two years and I stumbled across the forum while researching for my Rey Cosplays.

In "real life" I study English and American Literature and Media and Communication Studies.

So excited to find all that great information here :)

Thanks!

Hi,
I'm Mandy from California, loved lurking the boards for a while but decided to finally join!

I love drawing, and I collect Hot Toys figures, Mondo vinyl and movie costumes and props, but I like to incorporate them into my daily clothing. So far I have Lisbeth's leather backpack from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the 2015 Nike Bruin rerelease from BTTF and Rey's Po-Zu boots from TFA!

Currently interested in building a Marty McFly costume!

Nice to meet you all! Hope to have fun!
