Introduction

Greetings all. It's nice to finally have an account here on this particularly venerable forum.

As far as introductions/experience go my name is Zack and I'm currently employed at Polymer Armory as lead shop gnome in charge of Clone Commando outfitting and deployment. Aka I pull the suits, cast the resin and try to make sure that things move out smoothly. I haven't personally done too many personal builds though, being new to the scene, and I'm hoping to expand my experience. I have some formal training in both woodcraft (from my father, currently a luthier) and blacksmithing but i'm currently enrolled in the Graphic Design program at SCC.

I'll see you all around the boards!

Hi. I'm Elkman. I heard about this forum from The Hunter's Lair, a Predator costuming forum.

I've been doing costumes at CONvergence, a Minneapolis-St. Paul science fiction/fantasy convention, for several years now. I did hall costumes for my first few years there, but in 2007 I decided to make my first Masquerade entry. I made a costume of Gamera, and my stage presentation consisted of me smashing a styrofoam replica of the host hotel and stomping on it.
DressUp-Gamera.jpg

To my surprise, I won Best In Show for this entry, so I had to keep entering.

For CONvergence 2008, I did Zebraman, based on a Takashi Miike film.

Then, for CONvergence 2009, I made a costume of Godzilla, with a stage presentation where I attacked Barney the Dinosaur.

I made spines that lit up in bluish-white for this one.

The Godzilla costume won the Best Workmanship award.

Then, this year I made a Predator costume after being inspired by The Hunter's Lair. I made the mask, biohelmet, bodysuit, and armor myself, but the most interesting props were the wristblades and the computer gauntlet. I built moving wristblades using the motor and track mechanisms from two old CD-ROM drives, while the computer gauntlet is an Arduino board driving a matrix of LEDs.

And, when I took off the biohelmet and roared, the audience gasped, then cheered:

This costume won Best In Show as well.

As far as costuming interests go, I like doing latex masks, sculpting and casting, and hacking old electronics to make new and interesting props. I'd also like to get more into animatronics at some point.

Greetings All!
Wow, I am impressed, because the first day I found this site I joined! Lucky Me!

Anyway, I have been making costumes for as long as I have been sewing. Our family participates in the local SCA group, so many things that I make have to be kinda factual and authentic.
now that our kids are all grown, and have money to spend on conventions and such-I get to expand my sewing realm, but also get to try out props!
I have alway been artsy-crafty, now my skills need to go to a higher level. My first "real prop" was an Ori staff (yes, it glowed!) It is also top heavy and bulky, but it was good enough for my outfit, and won me first place in the costume contest!
Now I want to make a better one-and do other props. We (collectively in our family) have woodworking, sewing and armouring skills, so maybe we can help out as well as recieve help.
thanks for letting me in!

Wow! Sorry we were unable to attend CONvergence this year-I had to work and one son was ill. Almost glad we weren't there-you would have INSPIRED him to build a bigger (and more complex) costume for next year! (Guess who helps...)

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hi people, I'm Mordoc (aka Nath, aka Beardman).

I can't remember "exactly" how I found this place, But I think I was randomly floating around google looking for interesting projects to outlet the odd creative urge here and there, ended up stumbleing on Volpin's blog, liked the idea of prop making, further googled, and eventually ended up here.

I'm not really a collector per se, but do enjoy grabbing the occasional replica etc.

Anyhow, as far as "prop backgrounds" go, I'm still a n00b, but have in the past modded and painted miniatures, with a little sculpting thrown in here and there.

Hopefully I can get some advice from the awesome talent pool here, give some advice (if anything stays into my areas of knowledge anyways :p ), and generally have some fun getting into this hobby :)

Hello I'm new to the RPF finally. I also am new to the collection of movie props. I had no idea people could get the actual props from the film until I came across this forum a couple days ago.

I am extremely interested in finding out how I can get the Anchorman ring (channel 4). If anyone has any info that can get one my way I would greatly appreciate it!

I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to register. I enjoy reading the posts of what everybody is working on. I'm blown away by some of the talent on here.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Wow first off I have to say theres some really cool stuff you guys have made. I found this forum by accident researching film props and im blown away. I live in hollywood and study film. Sometimes at auctions I come across some interesting items. Most notably a medic bag from band of brothers and one of the calvary hats from jonah hex. You never know what you'll find out here.

Ive been a big fan of prop/replica collecting since I was a young lad.
I've got a few bits. (I;ll get pics up in the next couple days)
My collection off the top of my head is:

Hello,

I just found this site from a member of the 300DC site. I'm looking to get the Spartan costume soon.

I have the Gerado Fellano Stormtrooper costume I purchased back in 1998, I have been to a few outings in the past, the Episode 1 premier at the Chinese Theater and a few times at the City Walk in L.A. with other Stormtroopers, Vader and a few Boba Fetts. I have been to a few of the Halloween Street events on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I found this site through The Dented Helmet. My main interest is Star Wars props and I am in the process of putting together a screen accurate Boba Fett costrume. Thanks and I'm glad to be a part of this site.

Hello Everyone! I recently joined due to needing help with some costume issues and hopes to show off my Green Lantern Ring Making skills and maybe do some bartering in the process.
I am a collector of Junk to mix in with my toy hobbies and I work at UPS loading trucks. When I do create I do so from my kitchen table and a work table in my one car garage. I have some skills in Illustrator and pursued Advertising and Graphic Design but always was in it to create not necessarily make money off of it!

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hello all.

I've been making props, costumes, models and effects for the last 40+ years since I started making movies with the old family Super8 back in the 70s. I work a day job in the computer industry and am married with two daughters in high school (one almost in college).

I am classically trained as a professional artist and designer, and work in clay, polymer clay, various casting media, paper, paint, found materials, etc. I also worked extensively with college and community theatre in set and costume design, though I must admit that I prefer a glue gun to a sewing machine.

My work has included recreating props and costumes for spoofs of feature films like LOTR, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars/Star Trek; original occult/horror/fantasy props for Halloween and theme events; and original props for my own original independent projects.

I ran across this link while looking for updates on the toy replica of the vortex manipulator from Dr. Who/Torchwood for my eldest. I'm hoping to learn from others with more experience in various techniques, as well as share from my own experiences.

You can see some of my stuff in a few shorts on my website or on youtube under digitaliproductions. If you have an interest in 3D effects and animation, you can also find me on the site RuntimeDNA.com, under the name relik. I'm happy to answer any questions, provided you are prepared to wait a day or two (sometimes) as I have the day job, my own art/creative work, and family to attend to first.

Will be posting some samples and such ASAP. -R

Hello!

I knew about this site for a while I just never signed up till now!
I am a fan of costuming and model/prop making.

The project I am working on is a Costume of Rinzler or a Guard from the new TRON:LEGACY film due this december. I also want to make props accompanying that suit.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hello all,

I'm new here so I thought I would stop by and say hello. I'm new to the prop making side of things. I have done a little work here and there for some costume props I made for myself for cosplay in the past. I have always had a love for the silver screen so I thought I would come over here and check out what people are working on and try to give a stab at some projects myself. While I'll say it that I'm not very good at it, I do give it my best. Hopefully I can learn from all you master replica prop makers on this site.

Thank,
HDDoobie
