Extreme long time lurker.
I'm from Scotland in the Uk
Got a huge love for all things star wars, marvel, dc, warhammer and many many other sci-fi elements

I'm in the middle of building a Protoform vacuum forming machine (with mixed success)
In addition to this I have made several pepakura Space Marine files and I'm in the middle of also building a full suit of armour.
I have set up a small website to document all my stuff and I'm hoping that my experiences will help anyone else looking into starting out in the prop making hobby.

Re: >> New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! <<

Hey RPF!

I'm Stefano and I'm new at model making and prop collecting. I'm used to weathering guitars and amplifiers since I am a musician but never to model and prop scale! Hope to learn from this site! I'm currently doing a project which I haven't found anything other than screen grabs from the movie. It's from the animated short film Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker and I'm attempting to recreate his pistol he uses during the first chase scene.

Glad to join this forum and hope to learn TONS!

Well Hello like minded Earthlings!

It is so great to be apart of this wonderful group. Just this year i have found that i really enjoy making costumes and props, but i enjoy more the reations from people when they see the costumes. It is priceless. So I have started my journey and only time will tell how well i will do. ^_^

Hello! I'm Andy from Wisconsin, USA. I've been a costumer for about a decade, but I'm just starting to get into prop building now that there's so much information out on the internet being shared. I've done a few simple things, but I'm definitely looking to work on more complex things to go along with my costumes now.

Hello

My name is Chris and it has been 8 hours since I last worked on a prop. I know with the help of everybody here I can break this cycle and, er, wait, where am I? What a relief...bad nightmare. Actually I am a medieval instrument builder who is very active in vintage cosplay and some anime cosplay stuff, my most recent focus is on sonic screwdrivers that don't let the costume part get in the way of the playing part. It is my opinion (opinion, everyone is entitled to their own) that there are 3 levels of character play. First is lazy, defined as where the play gets in the way of the costume and props, and is acceptable for lurkers and novices - this level should be treated with encouragement, but a certain distance should be enforced from more involved activities. The second level is sane, where costume and props balance evenly. This is, again in my opinion, where we should all strive to be in our routine cosplay activities. The third level is neurotic, where the accuracy of props and costume often get in the way of play. This is where you go when you are designing a display piece for the simple sake of designing an accurate piece, and you don't really care about the playability of it.

Perfect example. A screen accurate Romana 2 sonic will leave the player walking around with a stick, nothing to do with the hands, no interaction with the prop. If you create the same device, but make some parts functional, it will take a bit more work, but it will enhance the play. I for one know that the person I am making my first Romana 2 for will NOT be a screen accurate Lalla Ward, so what I am trying to do is allow playing the character, not just portraying the character.

So each level has a purpose - making a cardboard sword to see if you like to play the character is cool, but you have to go beyond that in most cases if you want to develop the entire rig. Sane is a nice place to be with your stuff - durable, good looking with the ability to show your workmanship, but in the end fun to play with spontaneously. And while I get to the neurotic stage regularly, I don't strive for it always, especially when being really accurate gets in the way of having more fun.

Good to meet you all, glad you let me join.

Chris

Hey Guys.

Ever since I was a kid I've always enjoyed making and fixing things, so I thought it was time to finally try to do something with it. I'm looking to find ways to learn the crafts of prop making, and when i heard about the RPF it sounded like a great place to start and meet people who are just as fascinated by making cool stuff as me. As far experiece goes im still a little green. But I am super mechanically inclined and a quick learner. I know most tools you'd find in a metal shop or a wood shop inside and out. II spent most of my high school days making sure all of the tools in the shop and on the school farm ran smoothly ( and if you know anything about how school kids use tools thats a lot of work :p).

I'm currently just looking for a place to start. I am here to soak up as much knowlage as I can so maybe some day i can support myself doing something I love doing. Any advise or suggestions places to check out would be awesome. Super excited to be here and see what i can learn.

Hi! I'm Viki! I'm totally new to cosplay, props, etc. I'm very crafty & can sew, so at least I have that going for me! ;)

My family (hubs & 14 yo son) is going to C2 E2 in Chicago at the end of April. Son will be Dr. Who (10), hubs is Hellboy, & I'm some kind of steampunk girl.

I look forward to learning a lot here! It seems everyone is pretty talented & creative here. I look forward to being a part of this group!!!

Okay, I am a tad nervous but oh well. So I found this website as I w looking for ways to make straps for my clay mask and I thought 'What the heck? Why not.'

So I am an artist and growing cosplayer. I am a HUGE fan of the Darksiders base (hence my name) and am currently working on a fem!Death cosplay. I managed to replicate his mask but am unsure how to proceed with the straps. This is my first time making a mask and I am lost. So, if someone would be willing to help me out I would be grateful :)

Hey, what's up?

I'm a new prop-builder living and working in Savannah, GA and I'm joining here 'cause I've been following RPF on FB for forever and suddenly realized I'm an idiot and I should be here.
I currently make mainly weapons and accessories from videogames, films, anime, etc, and also custom pieces.

My current commission is Fili's swords from the movies that shall not be named. I'm really excited, they're gorgeous.

So uh, yeah. Hi.

DMB, saw some amazing stuff on this site. Though I have little free time to create things myself, and little to no knowledge, I think it would be awesome even if I learn a little.

Greetings everyone, I'm Darman from Wichita, KS. I'm a member of Star Garrison (Jango Fett) and Kessel Base (Hoth Han) many of you have seen my Hoth Han as Art shared it on here once. I'm also a member of StarFleet Omega and have replica Monster Maroons. One of my projects that has been on hold (except for the helmet) is HALO Reach.

Hi! New to props etc but quite old to model making. I used to do a lot of table top gaming stuff.
I'm currently looking to do a Hellboy Samaritan gun and am looking for more reference material.

Hello All, I'm Phi. I work as a 3D modeler/Digital Sculptor for VFX in film/TV/video games. In my spare time I love digitally sculpting creatures and characters from fantasy, sci-fi, pop culture. Up til now, everything I did was virtual, but since getting a 3D printer, I've been having a blast printing out my sculpts. Finally got the guts to join this awesome community and am looking forward to sharing my stuff and getting people's opinions and feedback if people are willing. Always looking to get better! Thanks!

Hello fellow prop lovers and enthusiasts. I just ran across this site and I'm glad I did. I have always been fascinated with the prop industry and my dream was to work behind the scenes in the movie industry. Since that didn't happen I have started building my own and have a couple of screen used costumes from Sleepy Hollow. I also had the pleasure of building furniture for the "A Christmas Story" house in Cleveland, Ohio.

I'm currently working on full size robot from Lost in Space and look forward to building other full size props in the future. I also love decorating out of the box for Halloween and Christmas. I have a 1966 Cadillac hearse I love driving year round and love meeting others that have the same interests. I look forward to meeting other collectors and fans of all genres of film.

Hello all,
Joined after hearing Adam Savage mention it so often on Tested.com. I have just begun building some props for my local theater and have plans to build some larger pieces for my personal collection.

I am software developer who likes playing around with electronics. Everything is better with a few leds in it ;)

My dream prop is a WOPR from WarGames.
