re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

My name is Jonathan. This forum is awesome. I can't believe how great the replicas are.

I found this place because I was making a Zoltar machine (a la Big) and found it to be helpful. Now the machine is made, and ready to sell!

Yep, I know nothing but I'm willing to learn!

Hi!
I guess I should start with an admission, I haven't made a model in my life...yet; So that's why I'm here. I adore film & tv but haven't really thought about making any replicas from them, my brain is just starting to tick over to that idea & reading the forums has certainly been inspiring. Passionate & creative people make the world so much more exciting.
My motivation to join has come from frustration at a lack of resources & specific information to help me develop an idea I've had for the past two years. It has nothing to do with film (Sorry) but a lot to do with replicas & modeling.
A couple of years ago I injured my neck, crushing my spinal cord & resulting in a pretty impressive (At least to me) chunk of steel now holding everything in place. I have danced all my life so I love human anatomy & studying how we function at a musculoskeletal level & the rehab process has only increased that passion. Being a creative nut I am always looking for new things to do & I would love to create an exact model of my spine, as is, implants & all. My question is... How the hell do I translate the mass amount of radiographers film into something 3D?!
I can work out all the measurements but I am totally lost on products & process, especially with no previous experience. I can't afford to spend a fortune but this is something I would like to keep so the materials need to last. A few people have suggested clay but I don't have access to a kiln. A similar product that I can shape with my hands & very basic tools would be good though. Hunting around art supply stores has only left me frustrated. Any helpful hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated please. I'm looking forward to checking out everyone elses projects & raiding my dvd collection to find my first piece of film inspiration for my next adventure.

Thanks heaps if you're still reading,

Cat

P.S. I plan to copy this post & put it in an appropriate forum thread as well as using it as my intro.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hi, I'm Eric. I've been making props for theatre, opera and window displays; currently I make props for off-Broadway and Broadway shows. I run my own blog about all that. I've heard about this forum for years, and I just love sci-fi, so I finally took the plunge and joined. I'm hoping to pick up all sorts of tips and tricks, and share as much as I can from what I've learned along the way as well. And maybe get some ideas about some props to build for myself from my favorite films and shows.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Its a pleasure to meet all of you.
I recently got interested in making props and just happened to find this site. I hope I can lean something from the many professionals here.

Hey Everybody!

Looks like I'm the new guy here...

I'm a huge fan of the Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror genres.

My name is Mario Alberto Salcido and I am a film maker that fabricates his own props and special effects.

Looking forward to talking with you all and exchanging fabrication techniques.

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hello, thought that i would introduce myself. My name is Michael and I currently live in Switzerland. I have always been a huge movie fan and decided about a month ago that I needed a new hobby. Being a great fan of Star Wars all of my life I thought I might try to build a screen accurate vintage ANH Luke Skywalker lightsaber hilt. I got an original graflex flash handle and am hopefully about to secure a TI Exactra 20 *crosses fingures*. The mylar tape and d-ring won't be a problem, but I am having trouble finding the rubber strips for the grips... if anyone out there on the forums is selling these please let me know, or if you know where a good place to find them. Thanks so much for reading and i hope to talk to many of you in the future. Happy holiday season to all as well.

Hi all. I joined this forum a few months ago but just started posting yesterday.

I make custom machined lightsaber inspired props, both with and without electronics but I am interested in all different kinds of sci-fi movie props and hope to branch out someday. This forum looks like a great place to learn to do just that.

If you want to see my work, please click on the link in my sig and it will direct you to one of my Photobucket albums. Please be sure to check out the sub-albums off the one in my sig. Thanks and I'll see you on the forums.

Good evening,

My name is Elizabeth, and i've been interested in building props for a long time. I love space, and want to build things like a satellite, radio telescope, lunar lander, and other kinds of spacecraft. I have always wanted to build an Exocomp, from Star Trek, The Next Generation. I am currently watching Star Trek: Enterprise (the tv series) and there are so many cool props in that as well.

I downloaded a radio telescope (small) from I believe the NASA's JPL site (which has a lot of paper models) so I am in the process of finishing that.

I bought a Revel International Space Station (ISS) a couple of years ago, and it is painted but I am waiting until I move into my new house before assembling it.

I recently bought a lunar lander model kit, but I yearn to learn how to build props from scratch. I didn't learn how to do these things when I was younger, so am rather clueless. I think initially I want to work with balsa wood? I eventually want to use other materials, and metal.

I love technical illustration, so I will probably use that to start with. So i'm a newbie and just learning. I plan on digging through the forum, but noticed this into area and wanted to say hi. :)

Thanks, Elizabeth

Hey guys. Had to sign up here, love the forum already.

A month or so ago, while browsing through youtube, I stumbled on something awesome.. The Jurassic Park cryocan. I was sold. I'm not that into prop collecting, but this I just wanted. After scouring the internet, looking for leads on where to buy this, I quickly found out it can cost a bundle of money. More than I really felt comfortable spending.

So I figured, why not build one myself? :love

Easier said than done. Let me say that I've got a great deal of respect for Rylo, your work is flawless sir. I think I've worked out most of the mechanics, but ofcourse, I'm not entirely sure yet on the specifics. A little guidance could come in more than handy.

Hope I'll get some of the answers I'm looking for overhere, I think I will. :)

Hey all! My name's Jon, or Dave the Hamster if you prefer. I've been scouring the site for about 6 months or so, gathering inspiration for my Iron Man armor. I'm an animator by trade, but I love to try my hand at prop building. I've done quite a few lightsabers from things I found at Orchard Supply. My wife called me the "Master of cardboard and duct tape". I'm hoping to move beyond that, so my armor will be done using the pepakura method. I really look forward to contributing to the site. The people here have accomplished some amazing things, and are a huge source of inspiration!

re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **

Hi all. I'm Adam, and more interested in the mechanics of the prop making world than the props themselves. Perhaps that's blasphemy, sorry. I'm interested in creating some items of my own design, and am here to develop some familiarity with the tools of the trade and the different methods you all use in your craft. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to share some cool items with the rest of you as my experience increases.

Looking forward to picking your collective hive mind!
