Hello from Sydney!

I found the RPF a while back via Club Obi Wan and years of Indiana Jones and Star Wars obsessing/prop making/costuming.
I'm very interested in the early years of Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first Jurassic Park and 1989 Batman- but really enjoy reading about prop making/concept art/visual effects of any kind. Adam Savage is also a huge inspiration- his enthusiasm for prop making is infectious.

Very glad to be here!

Greetings everyone,
I've been lurking around the RPF for over a year now without actually signing up, should have done this ages ago :)
I was drawn here 2 or so years ago looking for some Dr Who related info and found a whole world of fantastically talented builders and craftspeople.
Most of my build progress is documented on my FB profile, but this is where I come to get the good oil.

Hey all!
New to the forums and wanted to introduce myself. I've been cosplaying since 2006, but only now have gotten into it actively. I used to buy all my cosplays, but since my first contest I've been making my cosplays. So I'm here to learn tips and tricks on props making. :-D I learned about this forum from the cosplayer Kristen Hughey when she was at a local con. And so here I am! xD

Hello All,

Matt, 20, from Cleveland, Ohio. I'm a huge Batman, Lord of the Rings, Fallout, Skyrim, and Star Wars fan. I'm currently in college and have an extremely busy life, but in my free time I enjoy watching movies and reading Batman comics and graphic novels (which I collect). I'm hoping to be able to start creating some helmets and props using Pepakura modeling, and this forum has been a huge help in teaching me the basics. Thank you for all of your great posts, pictures, information, and insight. I look forward to being able to contribute in some way!

Matt

Hey y'all.

Name's Spatch and I'm fairly new to the site as well as the world of prop building and cosplay. I've only done a few costumes in the past few years but they mostly consisted of me buying parts and putting them together. However I wanted to start taking the hobby more seriously and give myself a challenge by actually building and making them by hand. The RPF seems like the essential site to learn to do all this, from what I've seen here from all of you, I'm constantly amazed!

My previous works include Captain Mal Reynolds, the 11th Doctor and Solid Snake. I'm currently working on a Star-lord build. Anyways I hope to learn a thing or two from you guys here.

Hi all!

Tom here, been lurking for a while, lots of great information here. I have always been a big Comic guy, and gamer, (geek I know..it's ok though, I embrace my geekhood). One of these days I will post a pic of my Jim Lee Batman tattoo to prove the 10/10 Fanboy level. I have just recently turned those interests towards some crafting as well. Works out well, gives me something else to do with my 10 y/o son, that is NOT video games, comic books or RPG's.

It made my non-geek wife happy too, that is until she figure out just what exactly my son and I were working on, then it was all eye rolls and groaning...again. So, look for my questions, they will be the one's that smell like noob.

Until then,

BBX

Greetings,

My name is Paul from around DFW. Like most, I've been lurking for some time; soaking up the information and knowledge. My primary interests are LARP'ing and costuming and that is where I got my username. LARPers have been using foam since the late 90's to make foam weapons so it is interesting to see others apply familiar materials (EVA foam) in new and exciting ways. I've starting crafting small props and accessories to learn mold-making and casting. Being an engineer by trade, I hope to add electronics soon.

See you on the boards or local park :)

Hi! My name is Will, and I am a a geek of multiple universes (Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, DC, Hunger Games, Doctor Who, and the list goes on), and for several months now, I've been itching to make a costume off of one of my fandoms. I found this forum through just online search, and I found so many awesome things on here. I'm finally getting to where I want to start working on a costume, and I am excited to be able to ask questions, and learn more about the whole process! Sadly, I don't have much of anything to show, but I hope that that will change in the future! As far as props, I love the Marvel weaponry, the batarangs, and any kind of sword. Thank you so much for having me here, and happy cosplaying!

Hey Everyone! Im recently new here. My name is Jackie and I found this site while looking for ways to fabricate armor for cosplay. I love looking through all the threads and seeing how amazing and creative everyone is. You guys inspire me! :)

I am a recent college graduates who volunteers as a stage manager or stage hand where ever I can get work. I have recently gotten into cosplay and figuring out what costumes I can make on a budget. Ive recently done a sugar skeleton costume, a pop art zombie and a pin-up tardis. I'm just starting and I really enjoy face painting. Recently ive been getting into fabricating and actually doing contests. I obsess over Doctor Who and Sherlock like its no body's business. I also enjoy the Hobbit, most shows on the BBC, Marvel tv shows and movies, Tim Burton, Joss Whedon, video games and books.

Other than my hobbies, I'm just a starving Christian/Folk/Blues singer making her way through life one day at a time. :)

Greetings all, I'm Tommy and I found your site in my search for prop kits to complete a Seaquest Cosplay I am in the process of making. The forum has already been a big help as it has saved me from buying a kit from a group that based on what I've read here is not exactly on the level. At any rate thank you for the help you have already given and I look forward to expanding my knowledge and hopefully get this costume completed.

Hallo, I'm Zanna. I joined this site right after I found out about it in hopes that I could find some people who would be nice enough to either give me tips or tutorials or stuff like that to help create my own costume. I've never made one from scratch, but I've put one together before. This year I'm going to try and put together and Meryl (Metal Gear Solid) Cosplay for my local con in Anchorage, AK. Sadly, finding the pieces that will be correct have proven difficult, but that may change soon!

Let me know if you have any advice. I have never sewn, molded, or crafted other than put together beads and artwork. Very green, as it were!

hey everyone I've known about this site for a while but never really knew what it was. glad I joined though, seeing all the projects on here is really inspirational. I don't get to work on projects as much as i would like to but as of right now i'm working on the root sword from adventure time, a transistor sword flash drive for the game transistor, and a toy astronaut. Hi all,

I'm come to france. A friend give me this forum for props..

I'm a big fan of costuming of Stargate and Jurassic Park 5i'm purchase a JP jeep#18)

Hi,

I found out about this place through many of Adam Savage's video on Tested.com's Youtube channel. I've never been really good at making things but I like to learn new things. :)

I'm old.. I mean really old.. (However, in this place, I feel it's ok to refer to myself as "vintage") I'm sure warehouse13 has a box for things that have survived for as long as I ..

My interest in Film & TV studios and props stems from my childhood where I would go to the AP Films studios in slough and watch them make thunderbirds. My proximity to slough and bray meant I also spent many hours having snuck into bray studios to watch space 1999 being made and later pinewood (where I was such a common sight most of the permanent staff knew me by name and just assumed I worked there! I managed to get some great photos of the batman, superman and early bond film sets.

As a photographer, I found the pinewood prop stores a magnificent breeding ground for ideas and all the better I could "borrow" things quite easily.

Days long gone..

Now, I'm an electronics engineer (well, for electronics these days, think Arduino, as that's what we all reach for to start almost every project!) a graphic designer, (my weapon of choice is xara) and put these skills together to build special theatre props that need light, and/or light animation and/or that special something that yo know who do so,well! .. game show stuff mostly..

I did however have cause to purchase a plastic card printer a little while ago, it's an old javelin (thems zebra now) 310. Needed a fix up and damn good clean, also needed to find all the right drivers etc but it's a very fast, clean and efficient way of producing cards. Perfect in every respect apart from one. The cards are crap. 300 dpi is just not good enough these days.. We can all see the dots!

So, I tried teslin, hmmm ok, pretty good results, but looked laminated.. I know daft isn't it.. But it just did. So I tried these inkjet pvc cards (yes, the ones that smell like onions and crap) and boy oh boy.. They are fantastic! Slap a dye based ink (my wide format epson does that perfectly) on them and they really pop! Wash the ****ty smell off them afterwards and bobs your auntie, perfection!

Now all I've got to do is come up with a way of laser etching the surface to make a hologram (the stickers are useless!)

Sorry.. I rambled... We old folk do that a lot...

Hi,
I'm new to all this prop making stuff, and I am probably the least skilled person on this forum. I am here to learn.
There are a few things I want to make, a lightsaber for one, being a big Star Wars fan, so I will no doubt be doing a lot of reading.

I'm not sure how long this post needs to be as I don't have any skills like wood working or electronics to talk about. I haven't worked in the movie or TV industry. All I want to do is make the cool stuff I see in films, that might be a prop or a costume.

I want to comment on my username ... I don't have delusions of grandeur. My nickname is "Alien" (it's a long a story) and I have problems registering on various places on the internet with the name, for reasons that should be obvious. So because I am getting into a game called Elite: Dangerous, where each player has the title Commander, I am using Cmdr as a prefix now and it allows me to register where just "Alien" won't. If you reply to me, please "Alien" will do, no need for Cmdr.

Let's see, checklist ... said "Hi", check ... stated I have no skills or experience, check ... explained username, check ... OK, I think that's it

Have fun
Alien

What's up y'all, I'm Jay, I'm a teenager and I'm into a lot of shows and cosplaying for cons so I thought I'd try making my own props. I have two complete cosplay, one being the Eleventh Doctor, with suit jacket, shirt, braces, fez, bow tie and screwdriver. I also have a complete Percy Jackson cosplay (I bear a vague resemblance), with the orange Camp Half-blood tee, camp necklace, and my first completed prop, a replica of Riptide, his sword. It's a wood cut out, surrounded either side with insulation foam, and wrapped in tape, then painted and details added. Not the fanciest, but it works.
I'm currently working on replica 3D Manouver Gear from Attack on Titan, making two sets, one for me and one for a friend, and I'm doing research for John Winchester's Journal, and I hope in the future me and my dad (who's an engineer and electrician) will work together to make an EMF detector from Supernatural.
That's all really.

Hello everyone,

I've been interested in costuming and prop making for a long time. I am interested in learning from everyone here on how to bring some of my projects to life. I'd like to get to the skill level of making armor, helmets, weapons from my favorite series from scifi to anime such as Star Wars (Old and New republic), stargate, Mass Effect, and more.

There is a lot of information out there. Hoping I can get some help to identify a good starting point. I have a basic understanding of electronics and a familiarity with arduino. Hope to use those skills in my props and costumes to add dynamic lights and sounds to them. Eventually making some sith/jedi armor with all the bells and whistles.

My first project I'd start small and work my way up from there. Thinking about making a holocron or something small. Feel free to provide some input. I'd like to learn more about molding and casting.

New guy here. just started working with replica props this last year. Have been building and painting for years though.
Started out with a simple costume and now I am a garage deep in fallout arms and armor along with a few pistol replicas from sci fi shows.
NO LONGER will I just lurk but will start to post a few projects as I find time.

Cheers all!
