New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Me, too.

I always that Davros genetically modified them.

Technically speaking, Davros would have been the last of the old Kaled people. He originally took cells from the other Kaled and advanced their mutations to their ultimate conclusion. If he used his cells technically the Ironside Daleks and all the Daleks he made during the Stolen Earth thing would have been pretty pure but I'm guessing that because of their programing and alterations they don't consider them to be as pure as the Daleks made by the original Daleks that rebelled against him in Genesis of the Daleks...but that's venturing into Fannon right there.

I'm fine with it being a little vague. Every freaking time Daleks showed up in Davies' run it got more and more contrived how it was explained. Oh, here's ANOTHER group of Daleks that the Doctor didn't roast in the final shot of the Time War that obliterated the Daleks and Time Lords. Oh, and this group has superior numbers and tech to all the previous groups for some reason. Oh, and they have a higher ranking leader than the previous group. Oh, and the Doctor's companion kills every last one by sneezing.

Agreed! A lot of agreed right there. SO far Moffats Daleks, regardless to the design have been far more properly utilized and have been a very strong showing. Sure the Doctor was a few steps ahead of them in Asylum but they were also really effective too. I'll take that ANY DAY over them being just about to wipe everyone and then their numbers are knocked down to three and a shoelace on a dinner plate floating in space defeated....again...

Eleven hasn't actually beaten the Daleks yet either. Victory he obviously lost, and Asylum was a wash. I really appreciate Moffat taking the effort to not over-expose them and portray them as a genuine threat rather than it just being an informed ability.

How were they on Skaro?

Skaro was time locked along with Gallifrey.

I think if we figure out how they were on Skaro, all of the other Dalek-centric questions from this episode would be pretty well answered.

Also...The Daleks built a sculptural monument? WTF?

Well I have a theory as to how they were on Skaro. It could have been before the Time War, after the 7th Doctor roasted it but still before the Time War, or it could still exist after the point where the Time War ended and no Daleks were on it so the time lock was ended, after all it was only the WAR that was time locked. If there's nobody there and the war is over the time lock stops after that point. OR it could be on Skaro after the Kaled/Dalek/Thal war after the Thals and Daleks left. I think it was mostly done for atmosphere though so don't expect an answer XD

That's what I was going to say, how could they have been on Skaro because I just watched McCoy turn their sun into super nova.

Then again, as postulated above, it could be at any point in time. It's what's cool and frustrating about the show. :)

I still think the most effective use of them is in small numbers though. The episode "Dalek" had more menace than any other episode they're in. One seemingly unstoppable force is always scarier than going nuts and having millions of them.

One thought though, have they just given up on the whole Dalek storyline? HOW are there so many around?

It's just so more of them get to shout "EX-TER-MIN-ATE" in unison. Kinda like the "$^@& the poor" moment in History of the World, Part 1.

I enjoyed the episode. I'm hoping that this season tries to make some further sense of all these unaddressed loose ends that they just keep adding and adding. I know that the level of Chaos in the Multiverse is supposed to be on the rise since the destruction/imprisonment of the Time Lords, but things are just getting too loose at times.

That said I really liked Oswin's character and found myself upset when she turned out to have been fully converted to a Dalek and created that fantasy world to keep an aspect of herself alive.

Also the modern take on the Robomen was really fantastic. Very, very creepy and a bit disheartening like they should be.

Yes, the Robomen were very well done!

I have a feeling that the new companion will have kind of a River aspect to her as in he'll know how she has to end up but will give her the time of her life beforehand. That's the impression I get anyway.

Lol. Nah, they made the Thals build it. :)

Even more puzzling... There's a Dalek PARLIAMENT???

Why not, there was a Dalek Emperor and other ranks. XD Calling it a Parliament is a bit goofy but I can live with it because it looked really cool and at the VERY least the inside of the Dalek ship didn't look like a slightly redressed underground car park. XD

I had that feeling too but she'd have to have a mind wipe between her back story companion time with the Doctor and her conversion to Dalek in order to totally forget that chin of his.

Still, in that one airing she's made the list of young ladies I want to see return as full time companions along with Jenny from The Doctor's Daughter and Sally Sparrow from Blink.

The Daleks in small numbers can be great but knowing there's so many of them and they are out there adds a constant threat to the universe that I feel was missing in the series till this point. Most of this is to do with writing and effects budget though. When you CAN have millions of Daleks on screen without worrying about not having enough props and having to resort to standees or toys and forced perspective you just go nuts and the story telling suffers. I like a balance personally though.

As for how there are so many well, I mean, once there's enough new ones either finding or making new Daleks shouldn't be impossible. Even as far back as the 2nd Doctor's era the Daleks could grow more Daleks and make more casings. Something RTD always seemed to forget after Bad Wolf.
