New BMF coming

I received mine this afternoon. All I can say is "WOW"! It certainly looks close to 1/48 scale to me.
The molding and details (that are present) are actually quite nice for a "toy". Certainly better than the details on the original MPC model kit by far. I can certainly echo others' statements that this is a great basis for a fantastic model.

Like the X-Wing, this plastic appears to be polypropylene. If it is, it will require special bonding agents to get things to stick to it. Polypropylene resists most solvents and cements. That's why most objects that are composed of this material are snapped or screwed together rather than glued. There are products that I have used before for bonding polypropylene to itself and to other materials.

Loctite makes bonding agents that work with polypropylene - one is known as "Plastix", the other, "Loctite Plastics Bonding System". Both systems use two components - a surface prep and a bonding agent. When using these, it allows polypropylene to be bonded to itself or other materials. I've used both of these before with great success.

As far as painting goes, there are at least two options: There is a product made by AMI called PolyPro Primer that is specifically made for adhering paint to polypropylene. I have not yet tried this, but some of you may have. The other option is to use an adhesion promoter (which comes in spray cans and is commonly found in auto paint stores) on the surface prior to priming with an automotive primer like Duplicolor Primer. Doing this will give the paint enough "bite" so as not to pull up when removing masks. As with any plastic surface, it should be thoroughly cleaned first of mold release and skin oils prior to applying anything to the surface. I would recommend testing gluing and painting on a portion of the interior surface first before starting on the outside.

So will regular superglue and primer not work with this?

Primer might depending on the primer... CA does not seem to "stick" very well. I'm going to try 2 part epoxy on mine. I got 2 one to experiment with and the other to build into a model for my Star Wars RPG. Going to do an interior I think for this one :D, as well as the outside!

Have you considered E6000? that stuff pretty much works on anything. It can be messy though.

Not sure what E6000 is. But 5 minute epoxy is pretty cheap and good - and if that does not work JB weld is good on almost anything :D

I'm really excited about this one... I'm taking pics and measurements off my MR Faclon and scaling the parts down for 3D modeling... but with the price changes at shapeways... who knows if anyone will be able to afford the parts.... OH well.

I just checked a local Wallmart and they did not have any of the Falcons they also seem to be sold out on the website.

Okay, this is aggravating. I don't deal with WalMart much, so maybe I'm just doing it wrong, but when I look this thing up on their website, it tells me that 1 store inside of 50 miles from my ZIP code has the Falcon in stock.... but I can't seem to figure out how to find out which store that is.

I would happily drive 50 miles to get this thing, WalMart, but your stupid website won't tell me where to go! Shut up and take my money!

grrr

I concur about how jacked up their website is. I wanted to order one online but I guess I waited too long. Guess I'll have to go burn some petroleum product to find this thing made from another petroleum product.

Huh?! What price changes? Please elaborate.

Over in the 1/700 black hole Cygnus thread there is a lot of discussion about how Shapeways is redoing their pricing for their parts... and in general it seems to really impact the small detailed parts that we generally use as modelers... modeling usage of shapeways is liklely going to cost significantly more... sorry to bring bad news...

When I go through and check on the details of a model I have loaded, it shows all the materials that it can be printed, why it faileled for some, etc... Then it shows prices, what it used to be and what it is now. Any material with a price change is actually now lower.

Not on everything... the price changes on Pimitive Daves pieces for the Cygnus are WAY higher... hopefully it balances out, or lower but not on the pieces I've been eyeing :cry

Hey guys, FZ6 needs the depth of the outer mandible side walls lip -upper & lower lip. Work progresses on side wall upgrades!

Question for US residents...So is this something I would easily find in a wal-mart in the states when I'm down next, or are they scarce? Just figuring if I should order and send to an American friend, or just look for it next I'm down there.

They haven't hit the shelves yet so it's hard to say. Exclusives can go either way these days. Ultimately I think it is based how many get made and stocked.

They have shown up in some stores from what I've read, or maybe not. At any rate, these seem to be as scarce as hens teeth. I don't think Hasbro realized how popular this would be maybe.

I look at this not as an un-featured toy, but as a child's MR Falcon!

I think the only ones in the hands of buyers are those that were purchased on line. I hit a lot of Star Wars toy websites on a daily basis and I've not seen any reports of them on shelves. Until the initial shipments hit stores, ease of availability is going be unknown. They are not scarce because they are selling out, just not stocked yet. It's like saying Star Wars episode VII toys are scarce... Just give it time, since online purchases are shoeing up, shelf appearances should be close.

The one store I checked didn't have them, but the did have plenty of those 31" Inquisitor and Stormtrooper figures. Talk about misjudging the market!

I was on the fence about this one, given it's price, size, and the potential issues with the choice of plastic. Looks like the decision may have been made for me.

I checked the site myself, and regardless of the zip code I entered, it was available in one store within fifty miles. Seems to me that's either a default response or an out and out lie. Either way... Oh well.

Oh, just for curiosity's sake: How accurate are the stickers in detail? If you wanted to hand fabricate the replacement parts, would they be a suitable "blueprint"?
