New 10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote

Should be soon now. If they get them in the US and have them ready by Wednesday to sell. I am pre-registered with Thinkgeek for it so I will be checking my emails frequently beginning next Monday. I already have a sonic display stand for this, specific to the 10th Doctor. I can't wait until my first staff meeting after I get this to turn the TV in the break room off with before we get started.

When 75 eyes light up and ask what it is, I will casually say with a most dismissive tone, "This, (Wave it around a couple times) this is my sonic screwdriver." Then stick it in my pocket as if giving it no thought at all, then...."Now, where were we?"

When you buy a regular TVBGone, it occurs to me that there are a couple of different 'regions' that you choose from (i think there's a european one, american one etc.). Will this affect the operation of the sonic's 'tvbgone' feature at all seeing as there are no 'regions'?

Ah, good question! The infrared (IR) transmitter/receiver chip inside the sonic contains a database of IR codes that is intended to cover most TVs all over the world. When you activate the TVBGone-style feature, the Sonic sends out a sequence of 136 infrared (IR) codes for different TVs, starting with the most popular brands (Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, etc) before moving on to the less-common ones. The whole sequence takes around 60 seconds, but most TVs will turn off within around 5 or 10 seconds (and you can let go of the button to stop the sequence as soon as the TV has turned off).

Since the sonic isn't region-specific, it won't work with absolutely every TV all over the world, especially for some of the more obscure brands. We did think about extending the sequence with more IR codes, but felt that no-one's going to be particularly impressed if you have to keep pointing the sonic at a TV for more than 60 seconds in order to turn it off.

Hmmm... that's strange, and disappointing, as you say. We did talk through with them the idea of shipping out their first pre-orders early rather than waiting until the end of the month (which is what their website said from the start) - they seemed to think that it was a good idea, but it sounds like perhaps they changed their minds (after they sent out the emails, which is a really peculiar way to go about things). So far, they've received exactly the same quantity of stock from us as Firebox and Forbidden Planet have (in the two deliveries I mentioned before).

I'd have thought that they would have been a bit more organised, especially since it is licenced by the BBC. Still, as long as it is here before the 50th special next month I'm not too worried.

I can imagine that after all of the hassle they have gotten from this thread, it will be a LONG time before The Wand Company decides to make another sonic remote.....

OK...first of all...post 545...dang:facepalm

Next, read this carefully...ThinkGeek is now showing this as 'COMING SOON'. You can go to the page & sign up to be emailed when it comes up FOR ORDER.

To get to the page, you have to click on the link for the '10th DOCTOR PAJAMA SET'. Then there's a link that takes you to the remote page. This info is for those who didn't get to sign up when it was originally up. That is all.

Again...THINK GEEK DO NOT HAVE ONE IN STOCK, NOR DO THEY HAVE AN ORDER UP YET!!! YOU MAY GO TO THE PAGE & SIGN UP TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE COME UP FOR ORDER!!!!

I wouldn't blame them if that did happen.
They have worked very hard to make a very accurate product which actually works as a remote. It didn't have to be done but they did it. If we have to wait a bit longer to get it I say just wait, we will get it in hand. For me the added wait is just making me anticipate it's arrival even more.
They have gone above and beyond with this sonic, especially for the price it is. I for one would like to thank them for choosing to make it.

I can see it now...

'Hey Richard, thanks for making the River Song Sonic remote. A couple of quick questions, I'm 5' 7 & weigh 237 lbs. Do you think my pinky will fit in the ring on the sonic? Also, in the episodes there was a digital form of River in the neural link. In regards to screen-accuracy, will this be a current form of Alex Kingston, or will you be using the younger model? Finally, my post office tends to lose my mail. Even though you're only in the prototype stage, can you tell me when to look for mine so it doesn't get lost?

Thanks again.'

:D

Though I do not have it in hand yet, I want to thank Richard, Chris, the entire team from The Wand Company and David Tennant who loaned them his personal sonic so that they could make such an awesome prop (I mean remote, yea, remote) replica for us. I mean, how nice was that of him to honor his fans by allowing it to be used! Thank you all.

EDIT: It figures, just got the email from ThinkGeek. 20% off anything for orders over $40.00. It figures......it figures......

I would just like to say that the email will be sent when the item can be ordered, not preorderd. ThinkGeek does not take preorders at all i believe.

Do you know what brands specifically will not work like off the top of your head?

No, sorry. If we knew of any specific brands that didn't work, we (probably) would have made them work. Having said that, someone in the UK has already told us that the TVBGone-type feature doesn't work on their UMC (made exclusively for Tesco) television. (The IR learning and Control Mode does work fine for them, though.)

This thread is only a small part of the hassle - emails and Facebook have been much worse! As I mentioned before, we don't have any plans to make any more sonics at the moment, but we do hope to make another at some point in the future.

They have gone above and beyond with this sonic, especially for the price it is. I for one would like to thank them for choosing to make it.

That's very kind of you to say so - thanks very much.

Haha - that made me laugh.

It was indeed extremely kind and trusting of David to lend his sonic to some random bloke he'd never heard of. He really didn't need to do that.

I also want to thanks you guys at The Wand Company and David Tennant. I know you guys have been through so much with all of these customers and it must be stressing you out some. So thank you all, and I hope to see some amazing products in the future! :)

So, random thought: Does David Tennant now have one of these remotes? Not only would it be the best way to thank him, but knowing what a geek/Who fan he is, I can imagine he'd love one!

I don't know why but I find so much interest in someone posting on here. Especially questions. I have no idea why though. Maybe because its such an amazing project.

I'd have thought that they would have been a bit more organised, especially since it is licenced by the BBC. Still, as long as it is here before the 50th special next month I'm not too worried.

We've now received a few emails and tweets from people who've received their sonics from BBC (UK) Shop, so I was wrong to think that they haven't shipped any yet. I guess it's possible that they accidentally sent out more emails telling people that they were dispatching early than the quantity of sonics we've sent them so far, hence the recalled emails.

I emailed BBC America for an estimated date and got this. I don't know if they are saying this date to make it seem like it will come earlier, but I got this.
"At this time, we are expecting more inventory on or around the 29th of October."
