New 10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote

Well I'm a little ashamed to say the only other Tennant sonic I've had is the CO toy, so of course it doesn't have that effect as the speaker is placed in the head.
Can't wait to get hold of this one though :)

All I have is the CO toy too, never could get the money saved for a machined one. This time the money is waiting so I can order as soon as ThinkGeek puts them up for sale! I have been patiently waiting.

I have a relavant question that I don't believe has been answered yet. It has a "Tv-B-Gone" feature and if I remember correctly, they can also turn ON any tv. Now since the power button on your remote does the same thing it would make sense that the tv-b-gone would be able to do so as well. So my question is, will the sonic be able to turn on any tv with that feature too? Also, would anyone mind taking a short video to demonstrate if it does?

I had the same question. If this feature can turn off any tv, can it turn on any tv?

Basically, yes - you're correct. The issue is that a few models of TVs (such as some Panasonic TVs) require a long button press on their regular remote control to turn them on (but they can be turned off with just a short press on the power button). The TV-B-Gone feature only sends out brief infrared (IR) codes, so the turning-on trick won't work with TVs that need a long press on the power button to be switched on.

I hope that makes sense.

Will the slider button overtime scrape the body of the screwdriver when extending and retracting?

I was going to ask that too, as in the 3D scan photos, the slider is a tad bit higher, probably to avoid paint scraping, but since this is only plastic, and since it has been fantastically made, i would assume that there is some trick to avoiding any damage around the slider section.

Richard,
I expect that I will be playing with mine a whole lot. What is the likelyhood that I will get carpal tunnel syndrome from the frequent repetative motion of sliding it and pushing the buton?

No, the slider button shouldn't cause any damage to the body.

You're absolutely correct that, in the original prop, the slider was set higher away from the body to avoid paint scraping. In our version, the slider is made from ABS, which just isn't stiff enough (with the fiddly little geometry in this area) to hold it firmly away from the body, so ours is pretty much touching the body. In our early painted prototypes, this meant that there was a risk of the slider scratching away the paint - we made four prototypes, and in the most heavily-used one (my development prototype), this did indeed happen.

The surface of the lacquered ABS body is much, much more wear-resistant than the paint, especially when it's being rubbed by the (un-lacquered) underside of the ABS slider. There are a couple of little struts on the bottom of the slider, connecting it to the internal PCB enclosure - these help to reduce the downward force of the slider onto the main body, but I just did a harsher test where I removed the PCB enclosure altogether and pressed the slider firmly down against the empty body and slid it back and forth 1000 times (whilst keeping firm pressure on the top of the slider) - there's absolutely no sign of any damage at all. (The only difference is that the underside of the slider now has a couple of areas that look polished.)

Haha. (I assume that you're joking...)

Does that imply that there is a danger of the slider pad snapping off if handled a little too roughly?

No, it won't snap off unless you really try to break it (e.g. by slipping a flat screwdriver blade underneath the slider pad and wrenching it upwards).

Ahh good. Sorry for the paranoia, the longer I have too wait it seems the more obscure questions I dream up. Still, probably only a week to go now.

Two questions:

1) Will this product serve as identification for international travel? Such that I can present it at customs, tell them I'm the Doctor and have them let me through?

2) What does the product taste like? It wouldn't happen to taste like oranges, would it? I hate oranges.

1) No, it will not.

2) A sonic screwdriver tastes like Thyme!

Seriously the wait for my email from ThinkGeek is killing me! I just got off with customer service who's best guess of being in stock is "Any day now."

1) Yes, absolutely - that'll work every time.

2) Don't worry - Chris is allergic to oranges, so we made quite sure that it doesn't taste like them. It's more like bananas - as you know, you should always take a banana to a party.

Oh...I guess I was wrong.....never mind! :lol

I've accidently slipped a flat screwdriver under the slider pad and it came off when I softly wrenched it upward. Is this covered by the warranty?

Ah, differing views there. I'm not sure who is more correct.

The shipment for ThinkGeek was collected from our Chicago warehouse by UPS Freight on Monday afternoon, as planned, and should have delivered to ThinkGeek's warehouse this afternoon, but something went screwy with the UPS system and it's now scheduled for delivery tomorrow. The truck heading towards BBC America Shop is also due to deliver to their warehouse tomorrow.
